I know it is technically still around, but I would say Dark Age of Camelot or Warhammer Online (done right with 3 factions) or something like it. Not a PvE game with RvR as a e-sports scoring side note like in ESO or GW2.
I have always thought they did Warhammer wrong. Such an iconic IP and such a let down of a game. I still played it and had fun but I just always felt it should have been so much more.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

Never played it back in the day but heard great things. Wish I would have given it a try. Why did this MMO die if not getting too out of topic? Guess I could not be lazy and Google it.
Asherons Call was the first MMO I played starting in late 1999. Admittedly the graphics were pretty bad but the gameplay more than made up for that. I have not had so much fun in a game since then. The community was incredible. The monthly updates kept the game interesting. You could run so fast. The area in the game was huge. Loved the quests and rewards. Please bring back AC, update the graphics, don't change the game too much, and I will jump on it in a flash. Having an area where people could go and chat while the game was down was a great idea. So many other great things about that game. Too many to list. AC forever. BTW I played on Frostfell as Mr Magoo then went to Wintersebb when it first came out. Name was Adam. My powers were great! Nostalgis is both wonderful and terrible at the same time.

Ryzom isn't shuttered. You can still play it with your original characters.
It is indeed, t'was aware. The OP was about a remake hence my addition of Ryzom.
There have been few other MMO's over the years with almost similar systems but what they had was unique and having a 2022+ version of their (circa)2004 idea would be fun, I believe.

Be sure to properly psychoanalyze them for proper policing at a later date..
I never did get to play Asherons Call....Wtih better graphics would that be a winner in 2022?
The fact that AC is shuttered and we have complete shit shows like New World on the market is fucking criminal, AC was a better MMORPG than NW and its ilk in every conceivable way ( outside of graphics) and it's not even remotely close .
People want a better game , but would not play AC because if its graphics/animations but love its systems ..
People flocked to NW becuase of its graphics/animations but are leaving in droves because of its shit systems ..
I personally played AC to the end (still play UO 25 years now) because of the systems both games have superior MMORPG systems in place than nearly ever other game out there .I would put Eve in that category also.. : superior systems: Eve is a great game just very niche .
It astounds me that with all the tech we have today , No Dev can hit the sweet spot on a happy medium of systems and eye candy .
But the answer to your question is Yes , IMO if a Dev delivered AC systems in a better engine people would flock to it .

Hard to say.
I mean, Ashrons Call, was never a "winner" to start with if you look at the numbers, but that does not mean it wasn't a hidden gem of a game, it just means it never got mass appeal even when it was new and fresh.
When Turbine closed their MMO accounts, AC & AC2 went up for sale and there were no buyers. SSG which bought DDO and LOTRO, and were compromised of the Dev team for DD, LOTRO, AC, and AC2, didn't feel that AC & AC2 were a good investment. Now I have no idea why they made that choice, it could have just been that now many years later, the game was all but dead, ort perhaps it was because they didn't have the time, money and ability to really give the game the overhaul it needed to get back up.
But in any case, when the people that had been working on it, when given a chance to take over, said "No Thanks", that's not a good sign, all things said and done.

Ultima Online and SWG would be nice. The only 2 player-driven economies that I remember. I still have hopes that I will get a player-driven economy again before I die. Time is running out haha.
Albion Online has an amazing player economy... it's really fun. Heck, even the loot gear in dungeons is crafted by players.
Would love to see a new swg sandbox game with a lot of different profession choices but the biggest impact would be the jedi combat. It would be action orientated like the Jedi Knight series. My two fav games mixed into one please ^_-
EQ2 - for me EQ2 was the best mmo experience that I had... I liked the older Gemstone 3, Ultima Online, and EQ1 - but it was EQ2 that was the first world where I felt the balance of choice and individuality in creating your character really had an impact in the online community. EQ1 had that too but it was really EQ2 that balanced it and made it more approachable - you needed each other and couldn't really do much alone making it a great game - you basically had an online family... this if course before daybreak games bought it and ruined it through commercializing everything. I believe it is still true today that WOW and GW2 ,through no fault of their own, ruined the mmorpg world.. When companies started changing their games to mimic those 2 in particular it ruined their own games.... Anyways, I would like a remake for EQ2 with modern graphics and voiced characters.. A return to the true trinity; of Tank, support, Dps, and utility. EQ2s 16-18 class system with multiple specialized skill trees to make you character unique was the best and remains the best class system today... idk any other system that has replicated this complex system. Anyways, to day I am left with playing Swotor, ESO, & FFIXV - all feel like solo games now - Even Lotor and EQ2 have dwindled from its former luster with all their tweaks to mimic other games. The only hope I have is to wait for Pantheon (don't know when or if they will get there, hoping for a refreshing return to the thrinty system and actual communication in the mmo world not just for selling but for everything.

A completed Vanguard on a modern engine would certainly be an amazing game.

Was so before it's time and released just before WoW which was it's deathblow. Still one of the most unique MMO's that I've ever played.

I miss this game!!
