I'm really glad they're finally merging. It's not really a lack of popularity, just the official servers haven't offered much over unofficial. There's a lot of great mods on PC that made the official servers a hard sell. One strength some have is the population. With less choices hopefully more servers will get that kind of healthy pop making them worth playing over the smaller modded ones.

This is pretty good news.  A good CE server needs a healthy population.

However, the method they are merging these servers is a bit questionable.  If they close a server, only the character (and some of their gear) moves.  All buildings are lost.  So, you've spent a month or two building your beautiful palace.  Now, it's all gone.  Because someone has probably built their own palace on that site.  Physics suggests strongly that 2 palaces can't be in the same location.

Since there is no way to determine which servers will vanish and which will remain, those whose servers will vanish will be behind the curve in their new server.  It would probably be a better thing to have all buildings reset on all servers.

Nothing demonstrates "success" like server mergers and closures.

The absence of it for a game after the hype period is usually way worse. It took many months for Wildstar to handle it. Even gold farmers had left my server. There were times that I was alone.

    So alone. :(
