Same boat. It's a good game with lots of content; just been too distracted by new shiny games.
That's my biggest disappointment with this game. the major battles are just snorefests.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
i think LOTR is massive IP that devs are sleeping on, and havent done anything with for a while now. like harry potter
Every time I return I got bored really quickly...The quests in the game just wear me out and grinding has never really been an option with very little XP for killing mobs.
I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
Pre-Moria for me is also the sweet spot and some of the most fun I've had in any MMO, especially when played back when it originally went live.
LOTRO and DDO are different and probably that's why they are still around. I could not enjoy DDO, but I can't pretend it isn't one of the most unique MMORPGs I've ever seen. It's the only destination for D&D fans who want to play an MMORPG, not that piece of garbage joke Neverwinter.
LOTRO is also the only MMORPG about Middle Earth and since the other once was cancelled, that only helped establish LOTRO even more. If that other MMORPG was good, which I doubt, considering it was going to be cross-platform on PC, mobile and console and would have probably be directly inspired by the Amazon TV series, which is going to be a complete woke garbage insult to Tolkien's work so the game could have never been better than LOTRO.
Initially I did not like Moria, but that was mostly because the map was very confusing, but after finishing it, I kind of miss it now. I liked Mirkwood, Enedwaith and Dunland, The Great River not so much and after reaching East Rohan, I really want to skip it - it looks so much the same and boring and the mounted combat is awful and it sucks how much it is involved in lots of quests. When I read about people shitting on the mounted combat, I thought to myself that it can't be THAT bad, but after finally experiencing it, I must say, it's one of the biggest mistakes in the game.
I haven't been past East Rohan ever so I don't know how the rest of the zones are, but I'm hopeful that after I'm done with West Rohan as well, it will get better.
its not like it was before

Worth it to enjoy the journey and complete the main story at least once.
Have not yet though. Maybe there is hope?
Nah there is really none for me or the human race.

you may need to change time period Before/After battle
Can't remember which I used, but this is a good starting place for Pelennor Fields:

Proud MMORPG.com member since March 2004! Make PvE GREAT Again!
That's whats great about older mmo's. The community will be older players.
I think they are just getting some idea that since the game has grown, people expect more of it to play when they start.
Think of it this way, if they gave away 20% of the game for free when it launched, players coming in now, still want, say 20% of the game for free, but because the game grew, they are only getting 5%, so, SSG is like.. Eh.. lets give them a bigger taste of the bigger pie, and hope that lures them in better.
The "Mini Expansions" now.. that was desperation to milk money from their lifetime subs.
Pretty much every other MMO included previous expansions when buying the latest expansion pack.
This was one of the major reasons that turned off new players, when they were faced with so much content being locked behind a paywall. Even old content that was released for free back in the day before Moria expac. It was nuts and made a lot of players angry back in the time they went F2P and made those horrendous cash grab decisions.
