Recently, Bradford got a Steam Deck and has been furiously testing MMORPGs on the system. It got him thinking, though: how many people are like him and want the full MMO experience wherever he is in the world?

I thought the same as you... a device I could take along on business trips and stay current with my buddies in MMO or other multiplayer games.

I signed up for the top version but I'm still in the queue... Not sure if I will buy it when it's my turn.

No, no need for it at all, as I am retired and have PCs set up in all 3 homes,  more comfortable to sit in my office and play

Considering like 98% of my Switch time is docked. No, no I wouldn't. I just don't handheld game much.

For  the most part I'm not interested in traveling and playing video games. If I'm on vacation then I want to see the sights.

I could see having something for a train ride, especially if you are traveling with someone. I wouldn't play mmorpg's while traveling.

the only game I have on my phone is a Chess game for when I'm on the subway and I think I'd just like to keep it that way.

I don't play on the go, PC set up does the job nicely, but maybe the youngsters like this sort of get up?

I would only consider it if it were powerful enough to be a viable PC replacement since I would use it plugged in 99% of the time.

In the same vein I kind of wish the XBox ran Windows since its HW has gotten to the mid-level PC zone at a fraction of the cost.

No.  I have enough trouble seeing a PC monitor.  I don't need the strain of handheld devices (including phones) in my life.

Ever use a controller before? They break after a while if you use them a lot. That's fine if you just need to replace a $30 controller. You wouldn't want to have to replace the entire computer just because a controller broke. With the Steam deck, you do.

I like to game here and there when I travel. You can't fill every waking moment sightseeing. Sometimes I'm just sitting in my room drinking my morning coffee, or I have a little time before bed.

That said, I'm old and don't want to be hunched over a tiny screen giving myself carpal tunnel.

I generally game on the laptop I bring with me that I use to download my days photos on and check emails. I can see it being useful to a kid though.

Nope as way to small a screen.

Additionally it is not available for sale in my region and most likely it will never be.

I prefer to be at my rig when gaming.  It's most comfortable, easier on my eyes than these smaller screens, much better performance, and I honestly don't want or need gaming invading more places in my life.  Restricting it to only when I'm home, free of the obligations being in a public space, helps me keep the hobby in a healthy spot in my life.

I will say kid me would've drooled over this tech, though.

I reserved the biggest one but won't liekly be able to get it for another 3-6 months. I'm super excited about it. I play almost everything on my PC. But I do sit in my bed or recliner at night watching TV and play Titan Quest or This War of Mine or Knights of the Old republic on my iPad. I'd much rather have access to my full steam library. Play Elden Ring, Grim Dawn Titan Quest, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. I'm all in on the steam deck and whatever they do going forward.

They've got a guided teardown instructional video, specifically showing the controller components, and mentioned they will announce a source for replacement parts.

"It's possible to repair it" is not at all similar to "plug in the next one and carry on".  I've got two unopened controllers sitting here.  When my current one starts failing, I can swap it out in a few minutes and continue.  Can you repair a steam deck that easily?  If it means you can't use it for a couple of weeks while waiting for replacement parts, it takes an hour to make the repairs, and you risk frying the whole thing if you do something wrong while disassembling it, that's really not the same.

I'm getting the cheapest and upgrading the SSD. I'll get a 1 gig For less than the price of the mid tier.

It's so easy paying someone else to do it it would cost much less than a controller.

Or you can just pair a controller.

Pretty cool to play Shadow of War on an airplane and Hotel room while travelling for work.
With headphones on it is very immersive
    Glad I bought the Deck

I have been interested in how Shadow of Mordor ran on this thing, but I cannot bring myself to install it again. I can only take so many Tolkien-Lore abominations before I just have to stop. :P

Still waiting on my confirmation email. This seems like something I could take with me and maybe hook up to a TV like I've done with my Switch. If I can play my PC games doing that I'll be very happy.
