I have no free time, mine is all taken up playing properly launched games. Mind you a big thank you goes out to all the players who are making sure it is "game ready" at the proper launch for those of us who wait for a review before we bother with a game. ;)

I will be playing on a private server by myself. Can a solo player make it all the way thru the game?

Absolutely. I'm in a Clan on a private server, but play almost exclusively solo.

Honestly, it's absolutely the best way. Grab some friends, pay for a private server and have a brilliant time.

Yep my large gaming guild has a decent sized group of people playing on a guildie's private server. Next I need to decide if I want to try running it on my Steam Deck :-)

When you have to make a private server to avoid part of the game it's just not worth it....it means don't play the whole game unless you want to be griefed...

Yes. The game as I figured is at the moment griefer paradise.
And on other hand solo is reportedly not worth it and gets grindy very quick.

Most people don't seem to rent private servers to avoid a part of the game. If you go into game forums the conversations aren't about that. Some might, but most like being able to configure server settings to their liking, run the mods they want, and limit access to a group of friends or guildmates.

The people I play with usually discuss server config options so we're playing at a level we find challenging and enjoyable. There are a lot of people who do want to avoid trolling asshats though and that is a valid reason. I realize on an MMO site a lot of people here might like playing with many strangers but some of us like smaller groups or a familiar set of people.
You talked about this in Valheim, I am a "put all the players together" sort which you agreed with in the thread about EQ. I guess you are seeing these as very different games which I agree with up to a point. V Rising is not a proper MMORPG so by all means treat it like a co-op, Valheim seems too much like a proper MMORPG to me, there you need as many players as you can stuff in together.

How the servers are configured and run aren't so strictly defined. It can be a coop experience, persistent world multiplayer, or mmo-style although most of these games with self hosted servers don't scale beyond 50 - 100 well. It just depends on how you set it up.

In coop mode you can run the server on your desktop and have friends join, but it can also be hosted. I'm playing a small game called Necesse with a friend coop but Ping Perfect is hosting the server. It's kind of a hybrid with survival light and rogue-lite elements.

What I usually do is rent a 10 slot server (which is typically the minimum) and then set the server to be unlisted and a password or Steam ID whitelist login. That way the world is persistent and anyone can login anytime they want. They don't need to wait for a host. The world feels like an MMO but with a smaller group of people.

Valheim doesn't need a lot of players to work well either. It can be fun with more players I'm sure but I played it duo with a friend and I also have a single player save. Same with 7 Days to Die and others.

Some games scale enemies to be tougher with more people.
To me this is almost like admitting defeat, the idea of a big multiplayer RPG where everyone can come on down is being abandoned. I see Slapshot also said, "private server so no douchebags", maybe it is time I faced up to reality.

Well here is the thing.   It's a game where you build up your Castle.. and building it and filling it with items and minions gets you more power.   It's also a game where you can attack someone else's Castle.

We made the mistake of playing on another server for Citadel Forged by Fire... and logged in one day to find our base razed to the ground because some hacker dropped in at 4AM and blew everything up for giggles.

PvP on a small server (10-20 slots) just doesn't work for us.  It's too personal.  You can't just fight and move on.   So for these games we play on our private servers.  (and there are bugs so even on a PvE server you can destroy Castles).

Here's what's gonna happen: the same thing as every other early access crafting survival game.

It'll stay popular for 1-3 months, then fizzle out completely. No update they do after that 3 months will matter, it'll never reach the height of popularity it is currently. The full release will come out and it won't matter, it'll be dead in the water.

Same thing happened with Valheim, and that's even still in early access. Not many people are paying attention to it anymore, even though it's updated consistently, because it's not the flavor of the month. People played it, got bored of it and dropped it.

And reviews like this doesn't help.

Death to these one and done games that promise greatness after years of early access adoption. People who buy this, and review this, are nothing but cash cows.

Yes, death to games that provide more hours of enjoyment than their box price would suggest!

What if a game like this were to have a group mechanic that was cross server? You play on whatever server you want and when it comes to any group content you can queue up for it, or queue for pvp matches and such.

Obviously any modded games wouldn't work out. Perhaps only using official servers. Just a thought.

I agree with both of you, we are going to stay on this EA course which is detrimental to gaming; but if after launch players find they have a good game and get more than their monies worth I won't complain. The problem is far too many EA games are barley limping into launch status or don't even get that far.
