“If you’re new to Dragon Age, you have no need to worry about not having met our antagonist just yet. He’ll properly introduce himself when the time is right.”
Good, because I thought Dragonage Inquisition was deadly dull and couldn't finish it. If I'm going to try this one I certainly hope their open world (should they keep the same design) is less mmorpg "like."
So dull.

Same here. I loved DA Origins though.
Hopefully they will draw some ideas from it.
Other than reusing areas, I didn't even have an issue with DAO2.
But the 3rd one felt as if they looked at boring mmorpg world design and just filled it with the same nonsense.
So f'ing hate it.

They won't. They think everyone wants a twitch game. I love the ME series. But look at the difference between ME1 and ME3 as far as combat. Then look at Andromeda. Look at Origins vs Inquisition. The more tactic and RPG aspects of their games got removed with time.
Dragon Age problem is deeper than Mass Effects though. It's layered.
1) Bioware proved with Inquisition that they suck at making Open World/Large Zone based worlds.
2) They've written themselves into a corner they will not be able to get out of. Because most of the talent is gone. Also because you created a multi-branching story, where each one has a new MC. ME dodged this problem. Shepard, Shepard, Shepard. Plus between Origins and Inquisition they've created too many questions that they will not be able to answer to any satisfactory degree. With the new game I can say with 100% certainty will create even more questions, with no answers.
3) They favor quantity over quality with quest now. I'm not a super huge fan of the Witcher series like most (sorry). But I can remember more quest in that games first half of Witcher 3, than I can in the entirety of Inquisition.
I just don't have faith in Bioware to create good RPG's that I enjoy anymore after playing Andromeda and Inquisition. I absolutely loved ME trilogy and Dragon Age origins and even to a less extent Dragon Age 2. But Inquisition and Andromeda just killed both series for me.
Bioware went from a company that I would wait for anything they worked on. Buy it without reviews, trailers, etc. To what I see them as now. A game company that I won't pay AAA prices for, but maybe if I'm bored when it's 5 or 10 bucks. (*cough* Anthem....)

I want the ability to edit some AI scripts for companions, too.
I'm the weird guy who actually liked DA:I better than 1 and 2. I even liked their MMO-like openish world approach. I never felt compelled to pursue all the extra stuff like constellations, POIs, etc and just did the main and side stuff that interested me like dragon kills.
I have finished it more than once.
I never liked Solas, he was an asshole, and always replaced him with whichever other mage companion I had unlocked. Good instincts I guess

Here I go with the general crowd, Origins and Inquisitions in first place with DA2 in distinctly second place. My feelings here in step with reviews and players comments at the time.

I replay them all every couple of years just like how I replay the Mass Effect games. DA Origins graphics are now at annoying levels for me but the thing that I dislike the most is just how on-rails the narrow playable corridors are with a lot of world you can see but can't interact with.
Open worlds just suit these types of RPG/Adventures better. ME andromeda got a lot of hate, some very fair based on horrid things like the facial animations, bad dialogue, unlikable companions, voice acting, etc., but when it comes to combat, character builds and the playable worlds IMO it's the best of the 4. They went even more open world with it than Inquisition did and that was a good change there also.

I agree open world is far better, well there's one I liked that generally got a lot of stick: ME Andromeda; the ending was a bit of a fizzle but apart from that I rated it highly.
Something that interests me is does that real love of an open world show that you lean towards a sandbox MMO? After all themepark is all about the ride, solo games which lack an open world try to make the best ride they can, while both open world and sandbox can be said to be about choices.
For me that's not really the case, I always vote for open world but fall more to the theamepark side while still wanting to see lots of sandpark elements in a MMO. So don't ask me to do a ton of crafting but put it in for those who want it, where as exploring is a must, even open worlds can have relatively few exploring opportunities, Rift lacked them for example.

Agreed! I loved DA:O and thought it was the perfect mix of linear story with just enough exploring. DA2 was too linear and Inquisition was just an open world for the sake of an open world.

Inquisition's open word was filled with some of the most boring examples of MMORPG quests.
It also had really poor AI (love Solas casting barrier the instant a fight starts, so it wears off my tank before he ever gets to the enemy!) and a really poor battle control system. Compare Inquisition to, say, Pillars of Eternity. As far as party RPG combat goes, the two aren't even in the same league.
I guess I fall into a different category than most. I have enjoyed them all. I don't want cut and paste remakes of games all the time. I like it when they try to do some things different here or there sometimes. I loved the first game but I really don't want a second game made today that is that game with just different stuff. The same can be said for the second and third one.
It's rare that I will say what I just said to be honest. I look at games like Final Fantasy where they have changed ever single game to be something new and remember sometimes just wanting them to make the same game with different characters, but in the end I usually end up enjoying whatever they make.
I think the thing that most disliked about the later games is they removed a lot of the tactical stuff and made them more action based. Unfortunately that is where the money led them and most likely where they will keep going.
After playing BF2042, I really can't wait to experience same level of "production quality" and "attention to details" that all subsidiaries of critically acclaimed corporation like EA are known for. /s

Not weird at all. Critics loved DA:I, and there are plenty of fans that do, a lot of people still play it even now. It's like anything in life. It's loved, It's hated, or somewhere in between lol.
As disappointed as I am with Bioware. Deep down (REALLLLLLY deep down) I'm still hoping they'll revive Jade Empire.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
I liked the first one I played because it was fresh and novel at the time, but it got old pretty fast and the second one I tried I got bored within a few minutes.
I refunded dragon age: Inquisition since it went even further away from what I liked about dragon age: Origins. The closest I got to dao was pillars of eternity. Its generally because what I wished for in these sort of RPG is something reminiscing of the infinity engine party RPG.
The main issue I had with DAI is that it was some sort of hybrid between a party based RPG and a single character action RPG and while I enjoy both styles of RPG I never enjoyed the hybrids. Either go witcher 3 or baldur's gate, don't try be both at same time.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
What this thread has revealed to me is how incredibly difficult it is for a studio to please all players with an RPG. Maybe that's one reason we don't see so many AAA being made now and just being more open to different play styles would mean we got more released?
I liked them all. Three of my favorite games, can't wait for the next one!
DA:O just blew me away - feels a bit linear now but at the time it was amazing.
DA:2 had a nice take on actionish combat and I loved the dark story twists (obviously could have been much better if they had worked on it a bit longer).
DA:I had a great story/graphics/sense of wonder - it did feel too side quest heavy and the final boss was something of a let down but it feels better to replay than DA:O to me, even though I liked DA:O slightly more.

hmm the thing is, they did stumble (at least I believe they did) with their open world. It's as if they looked at an mmorpg and said "oh, players like this stuff, let's design around this!
Their open world was dull and tedious.
I agree with Iselin, these types of games are better in an open world. But they need to design them in a more engaging way.
Had they done a better open world I would bet dollars to donuts more people would be giving inquisition a thumbs up.
