Can I suggest taking a step back and then thinking about this? It was a political thread, the staff do need to think about where this is taking the site. But as we are not meant to do political posts it was not appropriate it remained open.
When the Blizzard articles were locked, I spoke out against that as we could post without getting political in the recent one we could not. Indeed I asked for that thread to be locked, it was a powder keg.
The site does need to think about the double standard being set where they do political articles (to be fair rarely) and we are not supposed to do political posts. I think giving them time to think about that is the right way forward. We don't want an open season for political posting on here, it was a shame to see the community tear at itself like that.
Aren't you supposed to delete your account to show us you really mean it?

That is correct as far as it goes, but you didn't take your reasoning to its logical conclusion. The political posts from staff shouldn't have been created in the first place.
If anything, allowing staff to push their own political views while no one else is allowed to say anything to the contrary would be even worse.

So are we going to use this thread to rehash yesterday's closed thread by referencing it obliquely?

Except that...same thread was opened on MoP and it's still open.
Just takes a willingness by the staff to moderate the thread appropriately, but they aren't willing to do so here.
Customer service is so rare these days, everyone takes the cheap, lazy route.
But then I suppose, we get what we are paying for.

Lets not in any way, shape or form try to use MOP as a model for how to run a discussion. What they do there is FAR FAR worse than locking a discussion.

They reported on gaming news as is appropriate for a gaming site. There was no pushing of political views from the staff, most of that came from you.
Shutting down was also the right call, I'm actually surprised you didn't get a ban considering how much you spammed that thread with your bullshit.
About the only thing worse than a political discussion is a political sermon. I really don't want either on a gaming site. We members are pretty good about avoiding those kinds of topics. That one was on the staff. Reporting on social media posts from game companies and their employees espousing political viewpoints is pretty soft 'reporting'.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Yeah, lets not confuse censorship and removing posts that don't align with their world view with having an "open" conversation. MOP is notorious for not tolerating anything other than their own opinions on their site. It's a very clear example of an echo chamber.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
Personally, I felt mmorpg handled drama relating to companies and things best by just reporting and locking comments. It was notifying people of events while also keeping personal beliefs and things in their own bubbles. The problem I was starting to see in the comments under the political debate was partly from mmorpg staff sharing their own personal views since it can be controversial in itself but the disdain people were starting to form for others based on how they feel about policies. This site is really about mmorpgs (even though it feels more about general gaming over the past few years) and connecting with others first imo. Debates like that are probably left off the site entirely or taken into private settings.

So are we going to use this thread to rehash yesterday's closed thread by referencing it obliquely?
This isn't specific to yesterday's thread. Considering how many dozens of political posts they've made over the course of the last several months, it wasn't surprising that they did it again yesterday.
But that's precisely the problem. Staff see someone in the gaming industry express a political opinion that they agree with and say, let's make a new post quoting someone in the gaming industry saying that. And then lock the thread to ensure that no one can express a contrary opinion.
If someone in the gaming industry expresses a political opinion that they disagree with, they won't create a post about it. Only if it's something that they personally agree with. That's just a way to launder posting their own political opinions in someone else's voice so that they can pretend that it's gaming related.

The staff quoted a bunch of people in the gaming industry all saying something from the same side of the political spectrum. What if they had selectively quoted only people on the other side of the political spectrum, or in this case, praising the Supreme Court decision? Would you still say that there wasn't any pushing of political views there?
Read through the referenced thread, it got locked before I even saw it.
The amount of ignorance on display was, frankly, depressing. One poster didn't even know what the original decision being overturned truly stated, yet posted multiple times acting as if they definitively knew. And that was just one poster out of about a dozen that jumped into that thread.
There will obviously be a bias regarding such hot issue (at least for as long as irrational fanatics are allowed to exist), and gaming-related sites are not immune from expressing their own bias, so I'm not surprised they'd decide to close comments.
Of course, people are always free to express their opinions regarding such spicy topics as "whether my spermatozoa feels the pain when I murder them each time I masturbate" elsewhere, there are plenty of other places for that
The comment disabled thing is definitely new but the political bias was around even when Suzie and Bill were here, Suzie in particular had a knack for pushing across the boundaries that they set.
Difference between now and then was that, they were a lot more open to wider discussion until Suzie was about to commit minecraft on someone. Then it would get shutdown that or it was just a shitshow from onset.
Still, I preferred those days to now which is why I rarely visit these days.
Not so sure. The amount of ignorance that immediately hit the topic makes me believe they should just avoid the topics entirely.
Folks are too lazy to even look up the contextual information surrounding the topics they then come here and pop off at the mouth about. If that's the case, best to just leave it out altogether. We really don't need to provide additional avenues for the ignorant to spread their mental infection.

Oh I don't disagree, I think they shouldn't deal with it at all. I'm just saying I prefer what it was to what we have now and that this is nothing new to this site in particular.
However that is what the industry is now, they have to get in line and show they're always in line with whatever made up standards there are.
I don't think there are any pressures on MMORPG.com to show they're in line with anything, to be honest.
God love the staff, but this site isn't a gaming mecca. It's a small little niche site. The idea that Sony's game studios would, say, stonewall MMORPG.com because they didn't share their posts doesn't seem likely to me.

Sounds exactly like watching TV and the talking heads. Even the politicians that are supposed to be the ones addressing this stuff (not a court) reveal a total ignorance of basic concepts related to the US Constitution and the roles of the 3 branches of the government.
Why should we expect more from a gaming forum?
