I was about to jump back into gw2, I haven't played since before any xpacs so needless to say I've had to do some reading to figure out where to go. From my understanding fire/burn and condition builds got nerfed just a couple weeks ago. Think ill be dusting off my guardian and speccing into willbender i think it was called.

Can I just put a hand up about the "lore"; look at the class names, a mish mash of everything from DnD to Norse and Far Eastern. Yuck.

Man it's been so long since I played GW2 (at release and for about a year after) that all of these builds featured in the article mean almost nothing to me. A necro conditions build sounded kind of familiar but that was about it lol.

Err, because their world is big and actually does include settings that are Norse and Far Eastern. Not a valid criticism when their scope actually is justifiably that large. Would you consider a game based on a fantasy version of Earth to be unimmersive if it encompassed Europe, Asia, and the Middle East?

Yes, as it sounds unfocused and made to suit every genre and cross over possible. Lore and theme require focus not a huge pick and mix.

I just looked at the class list, and, alright, you win. explain.

I mean, just work with me.

    From the Wiki: First Class:

    Guardian - Dragonhunter - Firebrand - Willbender

Alright, so... where is the reference to DnD, Norse, or Far East in this one?

We are looking at the names of builds as well as class. Necromancer, and Ranger are classic Dnd, Valkyrie is Norse and Shiro Renegade is Far Eastern.

Now you could say its hard to get away from DnD and that's true, but I found GW2 lacking in cohesive lore. It was more like playing a realm of memes. GW2 is hardly alone in this, WoW's lore started better but went south. Many new MMOs don't even have enough lore to be rated in my opinion!

Build names are not made by the developers though, and they're usually connected to the name of a piece of equipment/gear stat.

Shiro is old lore. And beloved lore at that. We're talking back in 2006 - when I started.

Willbender is actually a Stormlight reference, not a D&D reference. Ergo, it's automatically better, because Stormlight is a masterpiece.

(Anet has always been fond of references in quest and skill names to some degree. There's nothing wrong with that).

    Oh please not Sanderson! :)

I am joking, I just have a run in now and then with teenagers who seem to think he is the only fantasy author alive.

But that's just making the game more of a pix and mix for me, I know where you are coming from, many players do like reference to other "stuff they have liked" in their game. But it makes the lore lack the strength of theme that it could have.

All YA fiction is bad. It's cynnical quick bill paying by the author - and I can't fault them for that.

Just saying that his mainline fantasy works are absolutely top tier.
