This server is by far my favorite so far. I've previously wandered around each of the servers and while they were fun, nothing felt to my liking. They were either too easy, too dead, or the players just weren't very interactive.
I don't feel that way with Rebirth, yes the population is small but it feels like you're watching a village grow in real-time and that's wonderful.
The updates they've pushed out have become something I look forward to, with each one bringing changes that I wouldn't have thought of in good ways (such as this Kheldian revamp, love it).
Plus the styles/costume options they add in are clearly made to a very high standard and fit seamlessly with the game's current designs.
I could go on and on, but ultimately I think just experiencing it is better than talking about it.

You do have to wonder how a private project gets this level of updates while studio projects flounder.

Passion. All the devs for private servers like this actually want to play a better version of their game.

I haven't played this one, but I do have to agree other servers just feature a very large lack of community interactivity. I mean I remember when it was officially running, I'd have to wait for events and such, but on some of these servers I won't find a single person say, trying to take down the kraken. For hours. For many hours. A quite populated server and no one even passes by.
I never get invites, and no one talks to me.
If there's a server where community matters more, I'm all for it.

The reason I don't play here is that I love to group almost all the time I play City. You get that on Homecoming and all the little zone events will have people doing them and they call people to come join on the LFG chat. That way you get to get the badges too.

I salute Rebirth but unfortunately the number playing there is far too low for me .

Man I remember a time when MMORPG.com was afraid of lawsuits for allowing discussions about private servers games games on their forums. So many people were perma-banned years ago for attempting to discuss the subject and never returned. Fast Forward to today and now there are articles about it. How times have changed.

You ain't kidding.  The folks at SWG Legends took the NGE and added Bespin, completely new.  R3 is recreating the Jedi system, and ported the NGE's extra content backwards into the CU system.

There are multiple teams of volunteers that are basically taking DAoC into the realm of progression servers, with tweaks and changes between each reset to help keep things fresh for the passionate community of vets who still love its endgame.

My experience has been all of the teams spend as much or more time interacting with their respective communities as the average studio, too.

All for mere donations to keep the lights on.  I find the idea proposed by many in the industry, that these projects steal from the creators, to be highly lacking based on the above.  To me, that argument sounds like arresting someone for stealing a discarded candy wrapper because that person might use the wrapper in some amateur art they plan on doing.

It probably has to do with how the publishers have acted towards these projects.

For a while there publishers were ready to shut these projects down. Makes sense for a new outlet to not post info about it in fear of losing the relationship.

Now emulated games are tolerated so I don't think it's an issue, but it makes sense to me why they stopped people a while ago.

This is right where I'm at. I wish everyone on Rebirth well, but I'll continue to play on the Homecoming cluster with it's much larger playerbase.

Incidentally, none of the CoX private servers are emulators- they were built using the actual server code itself.

Sort of, the server code was used as reference, but for legal purposes no private server should be running on the actual server code, as opposed to reverse-engineered code.

It's a weird detail, but a meaningful one for operational purposes.

Theres 41 people showing on Rebirth and 2k people on Homecoming, with that few people on Rebirth you may as well run own server :s
