    It was originally intended to be a standalone f2p version of DotA2. It no longer served its purpose the moment actual DotA2 was announced.

    Heroes of Newerth was in development years before League.

    But League was able to release first because of Tencent's money.

    Tencent acquired Riot during Season 1, lol.  The game was developed and put into open beta before the acquisition. I'd know. I played back then.
