Mini-Games should compliment the main game and be on a similar type.

For instance: Putting in some driving mini-game in a tab-target fantasy MMORPG... Not a good fit.

Putting in a card game in an RPG.... much better fit.

I liked the fishing and crafting mini-games in Vanguard.

When fishing, you had to respond to the fish as it makes runs. Forward, backward, left, and right, you had to follow and keep up or lose the fish.

Crafting was a mini-game that required you to respond to problems, like overheating, etc. The better you can respond, the better quality the item would have when crafted.

Won't lie...fishing was arguably one of the best things in New World (maybe one of the few? Only?) Hands down best MMO fishing that I've ever seen, and I usually toy around with it in games, implementation there was great, it never felt like grinding it out, and going to different areas, occasionally getting treasure chests...brought me back to feeling much I like did with UO, which prior, had been my "gold standard" for enjoyable fishing mini-game in an MMO.

The other one, because I'm struggling to think of a ton? The "escape vector" mini-game in Elite Dangerous, when you are being chased, and you are in a freighter, or mining ship, and loaded up with goods, and you know that if you get pulled out into regular space, you are losing it all. Not that the game itself is fun, but it is fun in those situations!

was it eq1 or 2 that had the gems minigame? I always forget about the minigames though, vanguards card game was solid as well and kind of a part of the game not really a minigame thing

Pet Battles in WoW are a nice occasional diversion, LotRos and WoWs seasonal mini games need a mention also

The best 'mini game experiences' I have played in mmorpgs were created by the players themselves.

Yes. Wow twinks during the original TBC. Level 19 and 29. It was an effing blast. Then Blizzard had the dumb idea of i dOnT lIkE tHaT! Made a patch that gains experience when killing players in pvp. Derp
