An MMO With Name Filtering: =)

BaghoolBaghool Member CommonPosts: 118

If I do make my game, I will have to either screen it myself as a labor of love, or bite the bullet and hire a name checker.

I hate to be in a game totally immersed in the feeling and run up on "bigbunnybootie54571396" or some equally retarded name choice. It's not funny, cool, or original of you, it's more like lazy and adolescent.

No one wants to get stuck in a PvP by a PTW turd named "Mr.boomboom".

That is a total buzz kill...

Thoughts?

Damn strait do, but just this one! Another reason for wanting an adult game environment is to lax ones vigil on grammar/cuss words. I hate to restrict general conversations and enjoy colorful metaphors.

But I'd replace it with this rule, because I think the best gammer's (or at least the ones who are deeply into RPG's) work hard to originate realistic individualism in characters, Down to a background story and a name....

I agree with this opinion, and stand by the belief that you will have much less interesting people on a server if they can't even summon enough intellect and creativity to give their PC a world appropriate name. If you want to play Halflife, go be "dunebuggy271" all day, it's a modernist degenerate playground, but in a serious fantasy experience, a name like; "Vardahoth", is much more desirable to all fantasy buff's involved. =)

The only real way to avoid names you don't like in a game is to require players to assemble their names from an in-game dictionary.  Wizard 101 is an example of an MMO that uses such a system.  Wizard 101 has such a system as part of the game's attempts to be child-safe.  Generally such restrictive systems are considered very adult-unfriendly.  They go along with a policy of disallowing users to upload or mod any kind of content, which is the opposite direction games in general have been going since Spore, Skyrim, and Minecraft.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Just getting rid of the name does not get rid of the player.

The name is a symptom.   I don't mind silly names but if they are insulting or degrading or just plain stupid then I generally have a pretty good idea of that players maturity level.   And those I tend to avoid mightily!

You are probably talking half the players in MMO's however.

FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

LoTRO has one of the best name filters out imho. I do like names that lend immersion to the world. Names like Poptarts, or names that have been taken by other players so they just add another letter like Drizztz, really destroy the rp part of rpg for me. If you take half an hour to create a character you should take time to match a name to it./shrug

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Why do you even have nameplates on when you are an immersion focused player? Turn them off: Problem solved.

My system would more likely revolve around account suspension as a punishment until the name change is approved. The darwback would be that every new account had to be checked before activation. I'd never trust a bot to do it.

Names like; "Inmoras" would slip by all day. lol

That would be the half i don't want on my server. I'm not the monopoly guy, a modest profit is enough for anyone to get from such a fun profession as the game industry.

My peeve is quality Vr's quantity. And I side on the former as a point of honor. ;)

I don't even want to see "selfienuggz21" on my friend/contacts list in game! ;P

for 30 years and I am now on wordpress internet trying to get what an Android device does. I am not trying to bother but co-dominant naming is what you like in heroes of media ecology. I am (last I statement) getting the new wi-fi and Bluetooth in HTML 4 update is not a problem it is just preceding Internet of Things. That's all I meant. PAX!

    (Awkwardly enters the chat....)

Others outlined games with such a feature, I know you can completely turn off other characters names in FFXIV.

Go with the free trial though; no single mmo is worth $14 with Microsoft and Sony offering numerous triple AAA newer titles for the same price, or even less; but I digress.....

Many mmo tend to put down their filtering boot at the character creation screen; some of us are just low-key clever and get by....
