I have been looking for an MMO to pry me away from FFXI for about ten years now. I thought for sure XIV would be that MMO, but I never could get into it....
I played the que horrid beta and all, but could never get into that game.
XI is just so much more deeper, even though it is old.
It is akin a car 2004 car vs your new 2013 ride. You miss your ash tray, big cup holders, heated seats, everything you became accustomed to, is now gone. BUT, that 2013 car is all the rave, but you miss your 2004 everytime you take the new car for a spin.
To my eyes it looks like the original image is similar to when you set gamma too high and the one below is a likeness to maxing out that contrast slider. The original image looks very washed out.

I tried the free trial a few years back and couldn't appreciate it either. It felt more like a fashion wonderland than it did a serious MMO with any profound sense of urgency or importance or lore-related relevancy. It's like it doesn't take itself seriously enough for me to engage with it.
There didn't appear to be any incentive for cooperative play. Gave me the impression of a soloist's wet dream, which is fine if that's what they were going for.
But probably the biggest detractor was the combat and class homogeneity. That and I can't stand Asain MMO UI design.
Come to think of it it's no surprise that I couldn't get into it. I've read bits and pieces that allude to FFXI being a better option for people seeking more weighted/dedicated class designs. I have yet to work up enough motivation to test that claim.
