Overwatch 2 is still facing long queues after its free-to-play launch was hit with massive server queues as well as a launch-day DDoS attack. While those issues are still being worked out, those lucky enough to play are being hit with another wall: the requirement to connect your phone with Blizzard's SMS two-factor authorization.

    Needing a phone to play a pc/console game is pretty funny, ngl. Its even more funny when you couple it with the DI meme "DONT YOU GUYS HAVE PHONES. YET! WE GAVE YOU ENOUGH TIME!!!"

    No, the worst is in restaurants nowadays. You spend 20 min in the restaurant shitty app menu. A real waiter would have taken the orders in not even 2 min.
    The other day, waiting in line in another restaurant. Had to install an app to know when my table would be available, while the host/waiter was just two yards away from my party. So........ stupid !

    I love computers(got expensive ones with windows and linux), I love technology, but I hate the current trend of techno-stupidity that makes your entire life go through a fucking phone that you don't use to phone with in the first place!

    Video games are a luxury entertainment medium.

    You cant afford a phone but you can afford the PC or console to play these games?

    And if you cant afford to play Overwatch 2 then go play something like Paladins. Paladins is terrible and the players are worse but, well, you get what you pay for.

    Also, the phone requirement is being removed.

    Everone owns a phone.

    But at least where I'm from (Finland), you can get prepaid as cheap as 10€/year as long as you don't make many calls. Whereas cheapest non-prepaid packages start at 9€/month.

    (yes i stole that from Diehard 4)

    But seriously, all i have is the landline that comes with my cable/Internet package; having a cellphone is too much of a hassle.

    I had a Samsung Gs4 when they first came out in 2013, and i regret it to this day, - i paid off my contract and i promised myself I'd never get sucked into that insanity again, because it was so not worth what i was charged for 2 years.

    If I rephrase: There are very few people who don't own mobile phone, and most of them are elderly who wouldn't play Overwatch anyway. They don't matter.

    However if Blizzard excludes prepaid mobile phones then they lose a significant number of potential customers.

    I am pretty sure they planned this out. Just something else to exploit on by putting a "Skip Logon queue token" in the cash shop soon.

    They have to keep the cash grabbing streak of Diablo Immortal going aren't they...

    You don't have to do a 2 year contract.

    You can just buy the phone then go to whatever phone company you want and get a SIM card.

    You would just pay the monthly service bill from there.

    But, that would be logical and we all know something like that has no place here.

    It's funny my bank will soon require me to have a phone (SMS) to log into my account to access online banking. Soon that phone you have in your hand will be a chip in your arm. Social credit System incoming.

    We have prepaid plans. They are much cheaper than post paid. Who doesn't like saving money?

    Also SMS is a terrible form of 2fa. Sounds like they want to make it harder to create duplicate accounts, and they don't really care about security.

    To be fair, it's not the phone requirement that's the problem, it's the exclusion of prepaid:

    From the study: "Of the interviewed 421 homeless adults, 94% owned mobile phones at the time of the interview, while 56% owned a smartphone."

    So yea, it's not requiring a phone number that's excluding poor folks at all. The only silly part is excluding prepaid.  The rest is tempest in a teapot.

    This is pathetic. 600+ queue at 17:30 in Europe, not even prime time.
    And that's not a MMORPG, that's a damned shooter.
    Blizzard is definitely dead.

    What I'm actually suspecting them to do is to provide priority login to the "battlepass" purchasers.

    We're not talking about a bank account here. SMS makes those accounts hard enough to hack that hackers aren't going to bother for something as unimportant as game account, and that's enough security.
