Shroud of the Avatar has had a pretty bad run of things over the past several years. Despite these hardships, the development team took to the forums to assuage fears that the game will fade away.

Only reason this stays open is RG funds it behind the scenes as it would be terribly damaging to his reputation and ego for his namesake game to close from a lack of interest.

Maybe? If that's true as soon as his new blockchain game opens SotA takes a nose dive.

I agree on this! I just hope he does something good with the new project- or at least better than SOTA.

you know i quite enjoy the game ,and there is definitely more then one person playing the game. Most of us were glad to see RG leave the project for his crap NFT thing that will fail like every other NFT ,but when the server came back up there were a lot of people online playing ,my player finder for area i was in was at about 150 with more in other zones ,so don't count SOTA out granted the new player on-boarding is absolutely horrible and needs to be taken out behind the shed and have SH beat out of it and completely redone .Once you get past that the game is alot of fun ,and the community really is one of the least toxic i have seen.

He found a bunch of investors to help fund his upcoming MMONFT game.

Some gamers know, most of the world doesn't.

My 29 year old son who is an avid gamer, playing multiple game genres including MMORPGS across the PS5, Switch, & PC probably has no idea who RG is or aware of his current reputation.

Hard to believe, but people who avidly read about games on forums like this are actually a much smaller subset of the greater gaming population.

He reads an occasional story on gaming sub Reddits but rarely does he know what's going on when I try to discuss the latest follies going on in the gaming world.

Plenty of folks like him just waiting to be fleeced.

Sheesh, I was pretty excited for this game and was a backer...this is a perfect example of why I won't 'pre-order' any games anymore until they are released. Such a big let down. I mean, there are probably more fully developed games in gamedev.tv...

When they first pitched the game as what was functionally "Land Baron Online", they were already heading the wrong direction.

I guess "staying the course" doesn't mandate that it's a good course to take, however.

Garriott's a terrible project manager (like some other old Origin hands), but when he started SotA, it had a very different idea and focus.  Unfortunately, fans and backers didn't want that, they wanted retread Ultima pablum.  So that's what got made.

Missteps is pretty par for the course, of course.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Anyone know how complete this game is? I bought it on the understanding I would be able to play it offline whenever I felt like it. Felt kind of rip after it went F2P. Bought Archeage unchained for the same reason except I know its online but I could play whenever the mood strikes me. Another rip off.

In my humble opinion, it's one of the best MMORPGs to play, unlike those dozens of generic MMOs they have nowadays, which make you follow a straight line and you get to the "top" in "1 month". No matter how many problems may appear in the game, the Devs always try to solve it, even though the team is small. If you want a game to play for a long time, build builds, test different builds, thousands of items, if you like to decorate houses it is also possible, it does not have a maximum lvl, infinite progression, very good community, "middle age roleplay" by most players. It's a game that you spend a few days just to understand it, unlike Albion, GW, BDO, etc etc, where in a short time it becomes a boring and repetitive game.

I installed almost all the mmorpgs nowadays, and none had that soul of a true mmorpg, this is even shown by the age of SOTA players, who are 30+ years old, where these guys enjoyed the real mmorpg, and not this limited thing that the mmo's offer today.

So SOTA is gamings old folks home? By the way, you know many of us shitting on this turd of a game and the hasbeen who created it are 50 and older, right? Simply because we are old enough to have lived through Lord Dumbass and his multiple trainwrecks, including SOTA.
To be fair, I did enjoy his trainwreck Tabula Rasa.

Likely has little to do with Garriott's involvement, though.

I can't get a good read on what Garriott's true ideals are.
In Tabula Rasa, didn't he have a lot of intrusion from that company on design choices?
And as far as SOTA, I always got the feeling that he had to play along with the RMT and PvP funders or else see the whole thing bottom out due to lack of funding.

True, hard to parse out who is responsible for what in that regard, though I am leery of Garriott from the end that he's really bumbled about since moving on from Ultima.

This is why I can't stress enough to never back something that has not been delivered yet, I'd be crippled from the heartache from something I put my hopes and cash only for it to end up failing.

Never back anything until they show something substantial worth giving a dam to back.

    Welcome to the forums! :)

Where I will agree with you is the value of being in a mature guild of likeminded players. Thats how I have survived in modern day MMOs, we play it our way; not the "fast food cheeseburger and indigestion" way.

I have seen a few of old guild mates find homes in games like SotA (Project Gorgon was one I think), but I doubt it is for me. But what counts is what you enjoy, if it gives you that MMORPG buzz then crack on!
