New World has begun opening up its Fresh Start Worlds, and Amazon has put the game on sale for 50% off to entice more folks into a freshly revamped Aeternum.
93.5 K concurrent and climbing so far. The first servers that opened at 9:30 PST are now locked for character creation.
Edit: 119 K concurrent now.

It's unfortunate, but the current servers only have hundreds of players actually in-game while 2/3x more players are stuck in queues simply waiting on those first players to move out of the starting zones. Apparently AGS has hard limits on how many players can log into a specific zone at a time, and did not make any plans to handle the front-loading of players in the newbie zones.
That smacks me as a design flaw, and not one that should have been a surprise to AGS.
Temporary phasing would have allowed the servers to receive players enough to prevent the issue of mere hundreds on a server while thousands queued. Obviously, the servers hard cap at 2500, but when they first rolled out today there were only about 300 folks actually able to login, while thousands waited on those folks to move into other zones so they could actually log into their characters.
Yeah I saw one of the servers up over 6000 in the queue. However, they've opened up a bunch of fresh start servers not anywhere on the list of what they planned, so my guess is they're opening more fresh start servers than what they announced to try and accommodate the huge influx of players. I found one that only had 350 in the queue and started there. It's fun to see all the newbie madness of everyone scrambling to stake their claim on the new servers. Other than the queue I haven't seen any server issues or bugs.
So just to maybe shortcut the "mind boggling incompetence" discussion, I just confirmed that you only have to wait in these queues as a brand new player on that server who is just creating your character. Once you have created your character and get out of the starter zone if you log out and back in you get right in. The queue is only for new people on the server.

Managed to get a toon on Isabella. Where did the rest of you wash ashore?
Yonas. It was looked for character creation for a while but it's open now.

and once the streamers and their boot lickers who follow them around everywhere quit again those servers will be merging.
i give it a few months.
It obviously won't keep all players, but the game has made enough strides to be a really good time and a good value as a B2P title with a relatively toothless cash shop.
I expect this will give them a noticeable bump for a while.

Ah great, got to make a toon there but only played for about half an hour before heading to bed. I'll look you lot up tomorrow. Toon's name is Evil Bastich.
Hesitantly bought it after hating it in the beta and made a character on one of the fresh start servers. Currently having a total blast. No idea how long I'll stick with it or if I'll even get to end game, but so far really happy for only dropping $20. The cherry on top was going through the in-game store and only seeing cosmetics. No boosts, no inventory/storage increases, nothing. Good stuff!
It is obviously going to be bumpy for now, the real test is down the line, do you think the game now has enough new content and polish to keep the players there long term. In today's rotating gorge fest of a gaming world, I am only talking 6 months. Frankly I think it will struggle with that, but if it retains players better than it did at launch that shows it is moving in the right direction.
What’s the appeal of starting fresh? I’ve thought about returning to have another look at the game but don’t think I want to start from scratch.
For me I enjoy the 1-max level experience in MMOS more than I do the end game grind. Starting fresh lets me do that with a bunch of other people. On an established server the vast majority of players are already 60, so starting over on one of those is going to be a bit of a lonely road since everyone will be farming stuff in the new zone.
Also for this game it restarts the portion of the game that only occurs once per server where factions form and struggle to become the dominant force on the server. Even though I don't have bandwidth to actively participate in that part it is interesting to watch. It's a bit like an MMO soap opera. Alliances form, then betrayal or unmet expectations happen, people leave companies, new companies form, everyone is laughably angry over a video game. I eat popcorn and watch. On the old servers this all is sorted out and the guard only changes as people get bored and quit.
Anyway it's perfectly valid to play on the old servers. It's the exact same content. If none of the above appeals to you then by all means continue on.

It was sort of fun seeing major cities displayed as unclaimed villages with all crafting stations represented by greatly scaled back facilities, some no more than a wheeled cart or small table.
But in less than 12 hours towns in several regions started to fall under the control of a few organizations.
I imagine most might be claimed by the time I log in this evening so let the wars begin.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
