A new DAOC hybrid old/new school MMORPG could beat anything out right now, it is far easier said than developed but the core of the greatest MMO is already there.

Oh my no truer words were written about games from those days. I agree it's the people I remember because I have tried over and over again to recapture Everquest and have failed miserably.

Thanks for this great article, it was a pleasure to read.

I triple boxes this game. 1 account for my Necro main who was terrible at PvP but oh man could that guy grind some PvE. Next account was for my cleric buff bot which turned me into a one man death machine, and finally one account for my PvP main which I power leveled with the other two.

The good old days. Oh yeah and everyone in RvR was running some radar app that let them see other players from over the horizon. Dirty cheats. Anyway it was still really fun, and yeah mostly I remember the people from my guild. We all lived in the same area and would actually do guild meetings in person at the guild leader's house because he had a pool. Good times.

It wouldn't work, because far too many folks today think PvP without matchmaking is anathema.

There are literally MMORPG gamers today that feel they should never see, hear, or interact with another player unless it's on their terms.  As soon as you put a nice leveling spot in the Frontiers, these types of folks will lose their shit.

"After a couple of pints of this black tar liquid, I decided to buy a copy of DAoC that included the best expansion ever, Trials of Atlantis"

Clearly the OP was sh!tfaced the entire time they played to believe the expansion which basically killed the game (along with NF) was the best ever....

Good troll, but not a bad article otherwise.

Hands-down the best MMORPG ever made.

I actually took my family from Los Angeles to go visit the real Emain Macha years after I’d stopped playing. Such a perfect game.

My kobie SM will forever be my favorite toon in all of gaming.

What players are now used to is the mountain that any new genre, return to old school, or any new form of gameplay must face. That problem is the same for the whole of gaming and is acting as an inertia against any form of change whatsoever.

DAOC was my first MMO, started in 2001. My first toon was a Minstrel, and I remember when he hit 50. It took almost a year! I had started Pvping at lvl 43, and felt kind of weak. I still remember the first keep we took, that was a blast!

Shrouded Isles came out and it was fun. I started my second toon, a Cabalist. A spirit cabby could do some real damage, and I love pet classes. Got him to 50 and started to two-box with a Cleric. Got them all to 50, and ToA came out.

That kind of ruined it for me. I didn't like the Trials, like raids, too much coordination, too many people in charge, be on time, do what we say, ... yuck.

So in 2004 I gave my Cleric bot away to a friend for his birthday, and quit the game. I started playing Ryzom and City of Heroes instead.

DAOC still has some of the best gaming memories for me. Our guild bought all the houses in one neighborhood. It was fun decorating my house. As a mini with the croc ring, I was in demand in PvP. Got to Grandmaster crafting alchemist.

I think of it as the golden years. When DAOC was new, the people were nice, it was all awe-inspiring.

I remember running out with my Champion to defend the Relic. There were very few 50's yet. It was a lag fest but it was the most fun ever. I think I was lvl 43-45, and most people were yellow, blue, and orange. This was probably 3 months after release. It was great. Almost nobody was grouped. It was an immediate rush to save the relic from the Albs. Just all out warfare. That battle lasted hours. Chasing them down.

Who remembers the 2h shadowblade 1 hit kills on casters and staying stealthed? Lol This was what, 23 years ago? I was 16-17 at the time. I'm freaking 39 now, about to be 40 lol

DAoC was by far the best MMO ever made. Such a huge world, deep classes, deep loot, meaningful PvP, useful housing, etc. It had everything.

I played that game for 15 years. That seems unthinkable for games today. In the end, I had a level 50 in every class in the game, some classes I had two.

I would still be playing that game today if there was a population and I had a guild.

p.s. I actually enjoyed ToA. I thought the idea of assembling a weapon and leveling it was awesome.

One day...one day we may get another MMO that recaptures those lost times.

Funny thing is, though, it might not be a 'true' MMO. I think we're going to see a retreat from the 'massive' part of 'MMO'. In favor of something smaller. Like what Valheim achieves; a persistent world with only a handful of players.

((Actually it wasn't even Valheim that did this first. NeverWinter Nights did it too. And that was the first game I played that allowed for persistent worlds with a dozen or more players at any given time.))

There's something really nice about being known by EVERYONE on the server. Nothing grand or pompous. Everyone just knows everyone; 'that person over there helped me on the quest XYZ', 'that one crafted my armor'...

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising everytime we fall.
