So I recently went 1-60 on a fresh start server, and wow this game is soooo much better than it was at launch. For reference I also did the 1-60 grind at launch so I experienced that joy (not) first hand. The primary difference is there's soooo much more quest content and that content gives much more exp now.
At launch you'd get to mid 40s and run out of quests, so you were stuck grinding faction missions over and over trying to get high enough to get to the next zone where there were new quests. Once you did get high enough you'd rip through all those quests and be in the same pickle. It was just largely a huge grind and seeing level 60s was rare. A lot of people just gave up and quit.
On my new character there entire zones I didn't even set foot in because I had so much content I didn't need to. Also, my log is littered with lower level side quests I never finished because I had out-leveled the zone and just decided to move on.
Another major change is they added a solo option for the main quest line quests that required you to complete an expedition. While I chose to do the expeditions that's a nice option for people that prefer not to mess with that as well as new players that join a mature server full of 60s that don't have time to come run them through low level expeditions for their main story progress.
They also seem to have gotten rid of the requirement to craft a key to get into the expedition? I never needed one anyway and never received one as a quest reward which you used to.
Group finder is awesome and I hope other MMOs replicate what they have in New World. Unlike other group finders I've used before, you don't just join a queue and the server randomly tosses you in a group. You get a list of groups forming for the activity you want to do and you can see who is already in the group, their load out, and gear score. Also instead of just getting into a group you have to apply for a spot in the group. You have to declare your role and then they get to review your details prior to accepting your application. That way everyone is on the same page at least for what the group is capable of. You going to speed run this thing or is it going to be slow and steady? Plus I don't see how it can negatively affect the social element of MMOs like some people complain about group finders because it's not cross server and it definitely doesn't eliminate the need to interact with people. It just automates a lot of the process people would have to do in a LFG chat channel.
Overall I think the resurgence in players is well deserved. The development team has obviously put in a lot of hard work for a completely free expansion. The only thing in the cash shop is still just cosmetics. They even put the game on sale for half off. I mean for $20 there's a LOT of value currently. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum.
Started playing my old character about a week ago. I quit for the reasons Angrakhan stated the deadzones in leveling just sucked. Now I literally have more quests then i can handle. So the leveling experience has much improved. Not 60 yet but hopefully by this weekend will be and will try out the endgame.
Theres also a music system now, with 5? types of instruments, which gives various buffs, like 75 % increased gathering speed, so besides all teh new content (i jusr started on a fresh server) it seems alot has happened indeed, and for the better.
Been having fun on a fresh start server, it's way easier to progress now than it used to be, I hated going from zone to zone doing the same 3 quests over and over and now it has a decent pace. Hoping to get 60 soon.

I'll give you a hint about level 60 and gearing for when you get there.
The old level 50+ zones are still the same and not revamped so you get the RNG chests with mostly crap for quest rewards.
The new zone, Brimstone Sands, however, is done just like the newly revamped 1-25 zones. The quest rewards there are fixed items and those items are legendary 600+ (I've just barely started playing in the area and already had a 610 Rapier and Greatsword and 600 sword as quest rewards) weapons as well as gypsum orb rewards (one quest gave me 6) used for expertise bumps.
So as soon as you hit 60 make sure you get your tier V azoth staff and do the short quest you need to do to be able to enter Brimstone without the environment killing you, and start questing there.

I keep trying the game and bouncing, have not managed to get all that high in levels, i think the highest i managed to achieve is about 24 or 25, i think the problem is i keep messing up the weapons skills, i don't know, just does not seem to work for me.

You probably already know this but I've found if you make sure your weapon choices have the same primary/secondary attributes, in my case fire staff and ice gauntlet are both based on intelligence, so a decent build is pretty easy.
I could have also paired a blunderbuss, musket or rapier as they have intelligence as a secondary which also works.
In fact, I think in PVP many feel one of the other combos to fire/ice are better builds.

Im on my 3rd build. Started GS/Hatchet and got those to 20 but didn't love the feel in WAR PvP. Switched to Ice/Void with Heavy Armor for Support role in WAR but also didn't love it. Now back to my old reliable LS which I have up to 19 and just feels more comfortable to me.
With the ability to respec your attributes for just 200 gold it's kind of insanely easy to level and play whatever you want. Even have people respecing in the middle of a dungeon.

I've been going back and forth between my LS/VG build and GS/Hatchet. I even mixed it up a bit with GS/LS and Hatchet/LS.
The LS/VG, stacking Focus, just feels more comfortable, I add an amber gem to the VG so that 40% of its damage comes from Focus instead of Int.
That works well until I get jumped by 8 or 10 things in Brimstone Sands which is pretty easy to do in a lot of the quest areas there. I didn't use my camp much 1-60 but I definitely do in BS when soloing quests.

New World has a Light Saber build? Sign me up, anything more than 4 or so easy mobs is too much, definitely need a respec.

Another new change in Brimstone Sands that is very helpful especially when you're a relatively fresh 60 is that the 600+ legendary weapons you get from the main quest line are exempt from low expertise nerfing.
Normally if you equip an item that is higher than your current expertise for that slot, its effectiveness is lowered to the average of the item's gear score and that slot's expertise.
Not so with those quest reward weapons though. I now have a GS 605 LS and a 615 VG and they both function at full power according to their gear score even though my expertise for those slots is 530ish.
