Which game should I play next out of these?

I've got a backlog of games to buy/play and can't really decide which to play next, so figured I'd get some opinions.  I don't really have a preference out oif the following games, so I guess if one gets more of a vote than the others I'll just go with that for now.

 - Devil May Cry 5 (Never played any of them though, so not sure if I'd be totally lost in terms of the story)
 - The Medium
 - Necromunda: Hired Gun
 - Chernobylite
 - Warhammer Inquisitor: Martyr
 - Dark Souls Remastered (Never played a souls-like game in my life even though I love RPGs, so I guess I'd have the whole trilogy to play and then Elden Ring afterwards, but the difficulty is what's been putting me off big time.  Whilst they're fun for a lot of people, I just can't see myself enjoying dying over & over again, it's just not my kind of thing)

Believe me when I say I've played MOST of the big AAA releases that have come out over the past few years, so these are the ones that I've put off until now and it's all I've really got left to choose from at the moment until more are released.

I love souls games, so I say go ahead and try it. You can finally find out if they are for you. :)

Ihmo you shouldn't start souls like -games with Dark Souls 1. If you think you might like those types of games, just jump straight to Elden Ring it's better. Then consider playing all Dark Souls games if you liked Elden Ring.

Got a refund on it back when it was bad when it first released.  Surprisingly managed to get it after 50 hours or so as well.  Don't really wanna start from scratch again to be honest.

I keep hearing that Elden Ring is harder than the Souls games though, is that correct?  If so I figured I may as well get my bearings with a souls-like by playing the Dark Souls trilogy first.  Obviously the mechanics and stuff aren't gonna be the same in Elden Ring, but at least it'll get me used to dying over and over.

No worries, but next time it comes up on a Steam sale for $20 give it a try, maybe wait until they complete their full world revamp as this release was only for levels 1-25.

Still, I think you'll find they've removed or mitigated many of the mechanics which made the experience so hateful your first go around.

Don't want to group for Amerine expedition? Don't, there's a solo quest workaround and you even get full credit on the achievement/title.  ( I think it should have an asterisk next to it when done solo.)

I played casually for a month or so, hit level 60 for a few weeks, and then some friends wanted to try a new fresh start server.

So back I went, in just a week or so I'm at level 35 and only because I'm trying very hard to not out level my gathering skills, which is still pretty much the hateful grind you might remember.

Still, I am fervently working to get all of my my gathering skills up to 100 before moving to Brightwood and beyond as I absolutely abhor having to run past anything "blue", meaning Star Metal, Wyrdwood or Silkweed.

I was a bit stressed last night as my favorite hemp leveling spot had 5 of the "red" trees, (Skill 150) but since I never harvested them even on my first 60 I was able to deal until someone eventually came along and cut them.

I cheered them along for a bit as I think it's quite a feat to be at 150 already, unless of course they were a bot, but I don't think they were.

Anyways, pretty fun times and oh, despite living in Florida I'm having no lag issues playing on a US West server, Yonas but I don't PVP, might be more of an issue if I did.

I was in the same boat as you, love RPG's but never tried any of the Souls games which i assumed were a more roguelite style. I cannot speak to which is harder (the Darksouls or Elden Ring) but I picked up Elden Ring and spent about 200 hours exploring, fighting, collecting and made sure to get 100% completion of achievement / trophies it was just so amazing.

Like you I wasn’t looking forward to the dying over and over aspect, however that feeling disappears pretty quickly,  you try and find different methods to take down various enemies (skullduggery is almost rewarded in this game, example shooting some poor knight  from a high vantage he cant reach) and the weapons / spells etc.. that you can utilize are greatly varied.

If the dying over and over dislike is more related to *loss* all items, weapons, armors stay on your character when you die, only the runes you have collected drop (Runes are basically the currency for leveling, buying items etc) and can be recovered if you collect them before dying again. If you don’t mind a little grinding, you can earn enough runes to purchase a *level*, and then go exploring without the fear of loss.

I just finished about 2 - 3 weeks ago and am really glad i took the jump to try something different. Truly feels like a masterpiece.

I've never played the Dark Souls games, and I did not enjoy Elden Ring, yet I would still recommend giving ER a go.

Do not be put off by the difficulty. In my opinion, Elden Ring is not difficult. In terms of player skill, it's really no different from most average action combat games. You won't have to worry about difficult combos, button mashing, or accuracy. Given the lack of skills, I'd say Elden Ring is actually pretty damn easy.

Elden Ring's difficulty is really based around two core pillars:

    Obfuscation and Punishment.

ER deliberately hides information from the player. You have no idea what level the enemy is, how powerful it might be, or whether you stand any chance of winning. This therefore forces you to go in blind to all fights. You cannot prepare, you cannot judge, you cannot calculate. You just have to run in and hope for the best.

ER is also punishing. In most action combat games, you can miss the occasional block or dodge and still survive. Either you've got enough health to soak up the damage, or you've got skills to help you recover. In ER, if you miss a dodge on a boss, you're dead. That doesn't mean the game is harder, it just means it's punishing.

My general gameplay loop in Elden Ring basically boiled down to:
    1. Explore
    2. Start a fight
    3. Die
    4. Walk back to corpse, pickup dropped XP (souls)
    5. Restart fight
    6. Die again
    7. Repeat until success, or until im convinced i can't yet win

Success in a fight really seemed to boil down to watching for animations, then learning where in that animation to hit the dodge button. If you could dodge at the right time, you won. That's not hard to do at all, it just might take you 5-10 deaths before you get it right.

Also, I wouldn't call Elden Ring an RPG. It's an action / adventure game. The closest you get to roleplaying is choosing what weapons to use.

I know this all sounds very negative, so I'll finish on the positives for why you should play the game anway:

The world is very well built. I found it bleak and boring, but that's a subjective view. The quality of the world-building cannot be denied.

The lack of hand-holding can feel good after so many games designed for idiots.

Everyone else calls it difficult, so you'll hopefully feel pretty good when you realise it actually isn't difficult.

The lack of story is great! (for me anyway). I hate stories in my games, especially in my RPGs and action / adventure games. Elden Ring's lack of quests and story means that the majority of your time will be spent actually playing the game, rather than reading text or watching cut scenes.

The lack of upfront information encourages a more adventurous mindset. You just have to give everything a go, explore where you want, without worrying about the consequences. The worst that can happen is you die......and you're definitely gonna die, so why worry?

DMC5 isn't really long and can be mindless fun with several difficulties to suit pretty much any skill level, so if you're wanting something fast to jump into that's an option for sure.
