The day after it went full subs, which was a month ago.  It was getting around 200 people at primetime, with 25-80 at non peak times. Keep in mind that would have been just 1 month and 1 day after release.

Twitch of the game is pretty much dead

I monitor the website occassionally and all I hear is solo people complaining they want the game to focus more on solo, because there are not enough people for groups.

On the plus side a dev said they were seeing a bump in people after LazyPeon gave a positive newbie level review, and Asmondgold did a review of LazyPeons review LOL.  This all happened right around the 200 people primetime point.

Not sure how its doing now, but its hard to believe its much more than what it was a month ago.

If I had to guess, I would think in 1 month from now this game will have less than 100 people at primetime.  Just me speculating of course.

I don't think the sub could be paid with ease at all. Things are grim now and a lot of people are saving money and a monthly sub is an expense they can afford to give up and hence give up the game. This was a bad decision on their part. Lose the sub.

If someone could not afford the sub then it is unlikely they could afford something from a cash shop or some similar monetization model. A game like this cannot support a hundred thousand freeloaders.

They needed to focus on the people that can and will pay to support a game. So far, it would appear, that they have not attracted enough of those.

The game needs bodies people who can help with the group content or else what little players they have will leave too. You don't need them to buy anything their very presence will help those that do pay.

I am talking about people making decisions these days that put entertainment in the last place but still have time to play games. They can help bolster the population and Embers Adrift needs that.

Whether the game can handle the extra population is perhaps a sad epitaph to this game.

Called it when it released. No way will there be enough people at every level to keep a game like this alive. You can be too niche....this game showed us that. Now they're scrambling to fix what anyone could have seen would be an issue.

This is not that kind of game. You aren't logging in for 20 minutes and randomly join a group. Well, you can, but you aren't going to get much done. There is no "Dungeon Finder".

Not every game has to be for every player.

The problem with THIS game is not that they didn't attract thousands of freeloaders. It was that they didn't attract enough of their target niche. Gamers who want a group based, throwback game where you socialize with your groupmates and work together to progress.

Now the real question is whether they didn't attract enough of those players because they didn't do a good enough job making the game, promoting the game, or that target audience just doesn't exist any longer.

And more importantly, can they recover from launch and address those issues going forward?

Low populations only work in games where nostalgia and memories of what they were can fuel the current population. Private servers of games that were shutdown or iterations of WoW where the players are willing to solo or work with a few friends.

Embers Adrift does not have this currency. It needs to hold on to the base it has and if that base cannot tackle the content they will leave. They won't struggle and forge ahead as they have no memory of what the game can offer because they have not yet created any.

You're perhaps correct in supposing that there just isn't enough of a market for this type of game to succeed or Embers is just a poor example of what that type of player who enjoys Everquest really wants.

Either way it looks doomed. Sad because it means less chances of anyone else stepping up and making an Everquest style game again aside from Pantheon but judging the responses on the thread about Cohh Carnage playing is anything to go by, it's already a lost cause.

I assume those sorts of players want a better game than EQ which Embers clearly isn't.

Pantheon isn't looking much better at this point, but they haven't released or aren't trying to charge a sub.

hmmm maybe not "better" so much as different but with a slightly more modern controls.

I think games like Embers or Project Gorgon are about very small, close-knit groups of people who follow the development and become a sort of family.

They aren't to be viewed in the same light as larger mmorpg's.

While I agree as you know there is a mega thread discussing whether indie MMORPGS should be judged equally to their AAA competitors.

Seems a general consensus by many there is if an indie game is going to ask a AAA price then they should be judged more or less equally.

While I think there is merit to that thought, I would say an indie  game should always just be judged on it being "indy."

$50 to a mega corporation is not as hefty as a small developer that REALLY needs the money.

I would say as long as the indy game offered a decent amount of content, it's really fine to charge $50 or whatever dollars. The "look" is what it  is.

I would pay 50$ for a good game. Or 10$ a month. The emphasis is on the GOOD GAME.

It may not be able to be paid with ease by all but it remains a small cost for the hours of entertainment a MMORPG one enjoys can provide over a month.

They'll have to get money otherwise if they drop the subscription and that won't be well received by some of the customers they do have who very may be so primarily on the basis of their promise to be subscription based.

Project:Gorgon shows that low population games can endure over time provided they are somewhat driven by passion rather than profit alone. Embers Adrift may be such a game so could have more staying power than would be expected.

Hopefully so as it is enjoyed by some.

Is it that it's "too niche" or that it doesn't have enough content for those who want this type of game. Plus, it's very narrow in its fantasy scope as there are only human races.

Don't think it's the "niche" at all.

As I said in the other thread, we can't even decide what "indie" is.  Star Citizen is considered an indie game with a $500M budget and counting.

Now I agree that Embers literally checks every possible box for indie, but at the end of the day they STILL are competing against every other MMORPG on the market.  They are competing  with products made by non indies.

This game has a very big problem.

It cant even get its core base to continue playing.  People like me who buy games like this all the time, love this genre.  I purchased this game, and couldnt even bring myself to continue playing during the free month I had.  Like Crowfall when it released, it also had tons of people who bought the game and were given free play time, and couldnt bother with logging in.  That tells you something about the quality of the game.  Why would someone continue to sub, when it wasnt even worth playing when its free.

This game is so subpar going free I think could draw some more players for a short period, but it would all result in mass people leaving in just a few months.

I dont think there is a shortage of gamers wanting an old school game.  I think this type of game could attract a large 100k+ audience. However it needs to be GOOD.  You cant release junk and expect me continue to play it.  I hope Pantheon is taking notes.

IF pantheon releases they are doing a few things differently then this game that will help.

    1) The game is designed with group play but like EQ there will be a few classes that one can solo with. Like the Summoner and Ranger. This game doesn't let you solo at all.

    2) I think even from what we have seen in Cohh's stream it looks to play a better then Embers Adrift by a 1000x percent. Obviously I haven't played Pantheon so I can't confirm but looking at both Pantheon's looks more interesting and well constructed.
