Star Wars: The Old Republic is marking its 11th anniversary,  with a double XP event and additional sales. BioWare has also opened the 64-bit version of the game to the PTS as part of forward-looking modernization plans.

    It's a good step. I might check this game out if/when they actually update the graphics engine. I realize moving to 64-bit is a prerequisite for doing that, so maybe that will happen in my lifetime? I dunno, I hear the game itself is not in a great place these days, but if they update the visuals I could see logging on to play through the single player campaign on a new character just to see the world updated to a modern-ish level. It's so dated looking and doesn't properly support ultrawide resolutions currently.

    I think the big thing for this 'modernization' effort is the prevention of Microsoft from dropping all 32-bit operating systems.  Changing to 64-bit will keep SW:TOR alive no matter what (or when) Microsoft acts.  Sure, they *could* use this change to revamp zones or put in a new graphics engine.  But mostly, this seems to be a grasp at longevity.

    If they are working to transition to 64-bit, it would seem to indicate that they plan on doing that going forward. For the fanbase...sounds like a good thing.

    Graphics? Yes, that is a start. A bloody good next step is to at least try to give people what they want: a continuation of class stories. Do that and a L.O.T. of old players are going to return. Me included.

    Until then. I'll keep an eye.

    2023 is the end of EA's Star Wars gaming exclusivity deal. SW:TOR itself had (or still has?) a different contract.

    For a variety of reasons I suspected that TOR's fate was tied to the exclusivity contract but it seems like EA is going to keep it going. A 64-bit conversion involves a non-trivial amount of work and not something that should have been approved if TOR was going to be shut down.

    I did. First MMO I bought and played. When it went F2P though I dropped it. Man those were good times for a while there. I have no idea what went wrong because from what I have seen Swtor should have been a success.

    11 years with no new classes added. Isn't that some sort of a record? I just sat here for about 20 mins thinking about all the MMO's I have played. SWTOR is like the only one I can think of that hasn't added a single new class, job, or profession.

    I think that is because the lvl of work it would take. I think when the game launched they talked about adding huge expansions and classes but it turned quick went it went F2P.

    I mean look at the work it must have taken to make the classes they have now. Plus, the stories are regarded as really freaking good

    I havent played it in many years....It was heralded as a MMO but played as a single player game...Just couldnt get into it, but Im not a Star Wars fan either.

    THey invest more time working on their gold shop than on the actual game.. I wish someone would actually bother to make a proper expansion for a cange instead. Wish another star wars mmo would come out and those guys will finally get shut down!

    The "stories excuse" isn't valid ever since you could create a high level character(=KoTFE?). Outlander himself isn't really any of the original 8, but a special character unto itself. Thus, why not create a new class or something? Isn't like you need to create a mountain of story anymore. Further, remember the Advanced Classes concept? What if a, say, Jedi Knight got a THIRD advanced class(besides Guard and Sent)? That also don't require any story content or alteration of any major scale(maybe few dialogues here and there).

    And as long as the general graphics aren't improved and the original stories not continued, my interest remains lukewarm(at best). But, as I said, will be keeping an eye on SWTOR.

    64-bit Windows can run 32-bit executables.  That's why people running 64-bit Windows can play the game today.

    The main advantage of a 64-bit executable is that it can easily access more than 2 GB of memory, while a 32-bit one can't

    The disadvantage of a 64-bit executable is that it can't run on a 32-bit operating system.  15 years ago, that was a crippling problem, but the severity of the problem has diminished with time.  Today, none of the major graphics vendors even offer driver support for a 32-bit operating system anymore.

    If I recall, when SWTOR came out, it had some bastardized process where it ran two different processes to get around the 32-bit RAM limitation, and it was pretty kludgey.

    Yes, Collectors Edition box still sitting on the shelf. Played for a while, maxed out a bounty hunter who was spec'ed as a healer, raided then left the game like everyone else at the time. Whole guild actually up and quit in the same week.

    I'd like to go back and finish all the stories for all the different primary classes. Well I shall look forward to a graphic update if one is planned.

    Fix the gear system and bugs. Also reverse the companion nerf.

    I played SWTOR from beta on and in the last 5 years I have found little to no interest in playing it. There have been more than a few design choices in recent years that have just soured me on the game. The move to 64-bit has me a bit interested, but not enough to go back to SWTOR though.

    Also, SWTOR has THE WORST character models and faces of any MMO I have ever played.

    I haven't played this game in about 6 years. I left during the Fallen Empire(I think that was the name) expansion. The story just got so weird I couldn't keep up with it. The original class stories was cool.

    My son just got into SW over the past year so I got him a SWTOR account for christmas. We'll probably play casually as Jedi together and enjoy the story.

    If they invested in the continuation of Class Stories, the return would be, at least, tenfold. Even the reintroduction and cameos of characters like Saresh, Malgus and the like fires people up. What do you think a proper Class Story Expansion would do? People would be jumping out of their skin, me included.

    I have only finished the Imperial Agent and Jedi Knight.
