Now that this week's patch of Torchlight: Infinite has controller support it's actually quite enjoyable on Steam Deck :-) Not completely SD Verified due to some small text, etc. but so far very playable on the go.

You missed the best one of them all which is in the early access home stretch, Last Epoch.

LE combat is just bad imo , the worst of the bunch , unvisceral , unimpactful , boring .. Now they are saying they are finally getting around to try and liven it up , but I'm not sure they could ever do enough ..

Wow... not a single mention of WH:40k Inquisitor Martyr. That's a very solid game at this point, and if you're an ARPG fan it's pretty fun. If you're also a 40k fan it's a must play because they do a solid job with sticking to the lore. There's a few nitpicks there, but for sure they nail the 40k atmosphere.

The fact you mention Wolcen but not Inquisitor Martyr is facepalm worthy. It's way better than Wolcen. Wolcen even attempts to rip off the WH style. Just go play the actual WH game.

And Inquisitor Martyr is set in a SCI-FI world and not another Fantasy setting.

It isn't that bad and the "feel" of combat in ARPGs is not nearly as important IMO as the build flexibility.

Build flexibility is where LE shines balancing the power derived from gear and from skill choices quite well. They also do that without making the skill trees overly complex.

Wolcen was a hot piece of garbage. From start until now.

Last Epoch was okay for a short while, like a couple weeks of steady play.

D2:R was good to getting to Hell but I didn't feel like grinding (which is the end game for these things)

POE would probably be my choice even though I hate how the seasonal changes make it into base game.

I'd say Grim Dawn has the worst combat.  slow and clunky movement with halfass animations.

As far as how I'd rank ARPGs it would be something like:

    Tier 1:

POE (Had my fill but can't deny it's depth or amount of content)
D2R (could certainly be dated to some)

    Tier 2:

    Lost Ark (tons to do)
Grim Dawn(fully released with mod support)
Titan Quest (even more dated than it's spiritual successor Grim Dawn, but there is lots to do)
Torchlight 2 (mod support really helps but fun base game)

    Tier 3:

Last Epoch (Will hopefully move into Tier 2 by launch or 2024 at the latest)
    WH40K:Inquisitor Martyr
    Diablo 3
Torchlight Infinite (surprisingly deep character customization with fast/fun combat)
UnDecember (monetization is horrible but it's fun)

    Tier 4:

    Diablo 1
    Torchlight 1 (shallow but fun)
Van Helsing 1 (the sequel was quite disappointing)
    Wolcen
Warhammer Chaosbane (I had aiming issues with the ranged class I haven't seen in other ARPGs)
Victor Vran (controls felt hard to get used to)
Torchlight 3 (Mods could have allowed the community to improve it after PW gave up)

    Haven't Played:

    Tribes of Midgard
    Diablo: Immoral

What's the story with POE 2 because I think POE is top tier. I loved farming maps. I think it was the most interesting of end game grinds. Was interested in playing through POE 2. I also find the bosses in POE very difficult but that might just be me making terrible builds.

All I've seen is a trailer and some gameplay from a year ago and I'm still infinitely more excited for this than anything coming out of Activision Blizzard.

Grim Dawn is probably one of the best ARPGs I've ever played, which is saying a lot since I've played the hell out of almost all of them.

Diablo 2 Resurrected was a dream come true.

Path of Exile is also solid.

A good list, but the list has been pretty static for a few years now with only 1-2 new additions in that time.

    Unpopular opinion:

    I don't like POE.

I do like their overcomplex skill tree, but the combat is really dull at high level. With everything dying whether it is on screen or not, it feels more like a lawn mower than a medieval fantasy character!
I understand that ARPGs borrow from the shoot 'em up style with a lot of enemies dying, but with POE, this trend, IMO, is excessive.

IMO in a ARPG to be fun, the build should not do everything itself, there should be some level of player skill involved.
