An anonymous vote is far preferable to a high pressure union card check.

I still expect them to pass the union vote but at least this is a fairer vote.

Everyone wants to be heard, and feel like their voice and vote matters. Once you lock yourself into a union, that all goes away. You lose individual freedoms at the workplace and it drives wages down. Then they'll start hiring folks for specific jobs outside of the union, because they can do so, and you lose talent to other companies who are willing to pay more. That's why talented folks work in the private sector, of non-unionized companies. I think they think they're getting the upper-hand, but in reality they're shooting themselves in the foot. It sucks if it passed, but ultimately I don't think it will.

Socialism leads to being annexed by Canada? Dogs and cats sleeping together?  Sales of exotic sports cars decrease fractionally?

    The horror...the horror...

The secret ballot is there to prevent improper pressure both from the union and also from the company.

Imagine stealing millions of dollars froma go fund me that wasn't mean't for you, or using the World Economic Forum ties to shut down protestors bank accounts.

Unions are no different, and they need to be fought tooth and nail !

This is TRUE, Canada is a terrible to place to live right now. The Liberals have gone full Authoritarian. They didn't just steal from GoFumndMe, The froze all assets of the protesters for daring to protest in a "Democratic" Country. They are criminally charging the protest organizers and the Liberal voters of Canada think their leader should have done more. Being annexed by Canada would be a Nightmare for you. I'm ashamed of my Country right now.

Personally I don't care... if they want a union, they can have one. This seems to be a trend relative to gaming companies suddenly for some reason.

That said... As a consumer the way I look at Unions and their SOP is that it's just a cost to be passed on to consumers. They were already writing articles because Microsoft (as an example) said it was increasing prices for new games.

How much is the market willing to pay? I guess we'll find out.

If some gaming studios unionize, then either the sky will fall or else it won't.  If they provide real value to employees and keep their demands upon management reasonable, then there's no problem with them unionizing.  And if the unions behave badly and basically force studios to shut down, then they'll serve as a cautionary tale for others in the gaming industry who may be pondering unionization.

The gaming industry is notorious for making fairly outrageous "crunch" time demands of employees.  A union that focuses on pushing back on such overreach could plausibly improve the employees' quality of life enough to justify taking a 1% cut of employee salaries, and without wrecking the studios that they work for.  A union that is more interested in politics than in the working conditions for their members would not provide so much value.

Maybe we could both move to Belgium, I hear that's a pretty nice place to live.

I worked 20 years in a union shop.  It might as well be the mafia.  Don’t do it, it’s not worth it.

I still say the end game here is outsourcing low skill employees.  These "game testers" making $75k will find that the company can combine multiple units into one outsourced 3rd party the company pays to "test" the games.

Who knows.. maybe they are right and "game testers" will be making $150k in 5 years.  I doubt it.. but.. I never say never anymore.

Maybe, but who exactly is "low skill"?  Some people are vastly better than others at finding and then determining how to reproduce bugs.  A play tester who observes that the game sometimes crashes but doesn't know why hasn't helped much.  One who demonstrates that the game will consistently crash if you do this particular thing has done most of the work necessary to fix that bug and just needs a programmer to finish it up.
