Hard to believe it started in 2012. I remember donating only one time to the original kick-starter thinking it would be a Wing Commander type game, some multiplayer, some story. They have very nice community members for sure but I gave up on the game years back as not my type of development cycle I prefer no offense anyone. How are the Manchester offices these days for you SC's?
Another year has past and still no talk of beta, i did not expect any different but was hopeful. Guess as long as you milk the ship machine there is no reason to change the current direction, I mean they have already made more money on the current model then they could if it released.
This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but it's all good. SC isn't really taking the traditional development process. While they may have something they call a beta eventually, the game is already playable. They're updating and adding features regularly, and they have free weekends for anyone who wants to try the game . So I'm not sure what it is you're asking for in regards to a beta. MMOs are never really finished. They just get more features/changes. This is already that, just on a smaller scale, and different development style.
No it's not good.
It's good for the recent buyers who knew what they were getting into. But those who bought earlier haven't ever been given the announcement that ETAs have been abandoned and the game will take years and years to finish, with link that allows them to confirm their earlier purchase if they do not want to be given automatic refund.
You can sell and develop a game many different ways, but Star Citizen pulled a bait and switch on their old backers who bought into a game supposed to release within a couple of years, and then got neither the deliver nor refund.
This is hilarious. I mean, I only backed in 2015 and somehow (through the power of reading I suppose) I figured out what was going on. lol but this is by far one of the most hilarious bashing posts I have read to date.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

Comparing NMS with Star Citizen because both are set in space is like comparing Micro-Machines with GTA because both have cars
I agree but I think you are taking the point too far. We have seen when it comes to MMORPG's that new genre's taking elements of MMORPG gameplay came to challenge the genre like MOBA and co-op games.
NMS and SC are a lot more similar than the games you choose as examples, it is not about are the games similar, it is about are the games similar at all? That's why NMS, Elite, EVE and so on are alternatives to SC, they only have to be as good in one area of similar gameplay to compete.

There is an old saying in the US that goes like this: A Bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush
Until SC actually releases and achieves a persistent state it really cannot be compared to actual released games. Particularly those that have released years ago in a fraction of the time.
Time and again we find games that people fall in love with "in testing" games because of a belief that the full released game will deliver on their hopes and dreams. For me, I'll take the game thats actually released any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
There is a reason that none of these people make their main characters on a test server in an MMORPG. If they cannot comprehend the similarity to that, well, that's on them.

Comparing a 540+ million game in development for over a decade made by hundreds of people with a massive cash shop to an indie game (7 million estimated costs total) made by 12 people in three years that has already released and has seen tons of huge and completely free updates with no extra costs in sight is madness to begin with.

No Man's Sky has sold over 10 million copies. So that's multiple hundreds of millions in sales. SC isn't for sale, but has also brought in hundreds of millions. They are both popular space games, obviously.
I thought it was appropriate to compare them. But I should have known better than to try it in this forum.

Technically you donated or pledged to fund SC 's future development.
From their TOS I would only call their subscription service and merchandise as being for "sale" under the commonly understood definition of the word.
It matters because consumers have different rights for things sold vs donated, with far less protections for the latter.

It's not a donation. RSI doesn't use word donation anywhere in their terms, and they also charge VAT from European buyers which is not charged for donations.
RSI is trying to make the pledge into a new kind of contract that is not a sale, but even if they were to succeed in that the contract made with them would not be classified as donation.

You also pay sales tax backing a kickstarter project and shocker, you do not have the protections as you'd have if you pre-ordered the game instead.
The disclaimers stand, and people would do right if they stopped acting like crowdfunding is a pre-order platform, expecting guarantees that do not exist.
SC is also, early access, you buy "as is", you're entitled to all future updates, that's it in a nutshell, it's not even the finished game you're buying attm, you're just buying in early, people need to know what is disclaimed and they agree with, and decide their purchases upon that.

They (CIG brass) claimed multiple times that they 'were hard at work' on SC in 2011. Back when that was a useful point in their hagiography. Which was funny, as most of their Kickstarter trailers were made by Crytek.
I'm in the camp that holds Star Citizen is a boondoogle, not a scam. 'We're a third of the way there, we just need another $50 million' ad infinitum.
But hey, one of the advantages of having such a huge developer base working on things is that there isn't enough time in the day for Chris to mess up and micromanage everyone.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Not at all, if any I should have taken it further as GTA gameplay is also kinda arcadey.
A better comparison would have been between Micro-Machines and Asseto Corsa as the depth of driving complexity discrepancy in those games could be comparable to how the flying in NMS and Star Citizen compares like.

It's clear RSI took their definition of pledge from this crowdfunding site however in the non profit space they use an entirely different distinction.

The latest roadmap update for Star Citizen is aimed at improving the new player experience and adding new mission opportunities. This is a positive move that will make the game more accessible and engaging for players, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the overall gameplay experience.
