I think it's about time for another Free Realms -like MMO. There's been enough tech development and game development innovations that it's time to try out making that kind of game again.
I'm looking forward to playing this. Something light, that I can just have a little 'low impact' fun. Of course, I'll also be playing something where I kill things, but I'll definitely take time to do some farming and meeting people and just chill a bit.
It's going to be interesting to see how Palia plays out with next to no combat.its intial sales should be very good , and I think kids will really enjoy it , but as they are modeling off of Free Realms I'm not very confident in long term retention rate .
Free Realms failed for a lot of reasons, one of them was lack of combat. The demographic may have grown for this style of game since FR , but I still feel this will fall into a very small niche, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as they have that in there sights in regard to resources and financially stable.
We have seen games launch with little or no combat before, they rarely do well.
Really Animal Crossing has hardly any combat and it is tremendously popular. Also in Stardew Valley you can play the game without any combat at all.
There is definitely a market for these games and it might be a very large one at that.
As for MMOs A Tale in the Desert did pretty well in it's early days, it's still going, picked up during pandemic but mostly regulars now. Second Life has around 30-40k players on globally at almost any given time, though I would say 10-15k are worker bots ect.
One of the most ambiguous sentences on this portal:
"there’s a roundup of some of what you might have missed that was posted in the game's Discord today, reviewing some of the happenings from the past few months, including reveals, and some of what’s coming soon."
Well Palia aims to be an mmo , AC and SV are not mmos. Hmph well actually looks like Palia is only coop also 5+ players .. Guess we wait and see..
Unless 8 players is now an mmo , hard to tell these days, some people are describing online solitare communities as mmos.
Source? A couple of screenshots on their websites showed 10-20 players in one place.
It says 5+ on their site. Now obviously 5+ could be 20 , 5+5 =10 5+15 =20
Where on their website?
The only thing I found on their website was:
"What will be the limit of friends you can play with simultaneously?
There are multiple social grouping systems in Palia that are sized to suit their activities. For example, our party size is 4 because the activities we are planning for them have limited slots. However, your Community and each server can hold many more players simultaneously (we’re still trying to lock down the launch number and expect it to increase from early Alpha playtest numbers)"
Also they had screenshots with a lot of people, like:

Two great mentions there, but I would call SL more a online social experience than a MMO, also those are ages old, like I said it can be done but its rare. Minecraft does not have to have combat, they are out there but they rarely become major hits.

We've also seen a lot of combat games launch that don't do well. Of course more combat games get thrown against the wall, so more will stick. I think this will be a success if they do it right. It's gonna be more of a gamification of a social platform. I'm gonna give it a go. I like farming and stuff, so I'm gonna just farm and see how it goes.

Seeing as Animal Crossing New Horizons is just shy of 40 million copies sold I believe the niche is big enough without combat.

It depends on how close to that style of game it is, I have not really looked into Palia, does romance and friendship sell well? I am not sure where they are pitching the game, we shall see.

I don't think Palia will be a game that focuses on romancing or befriending those characters. It's just standard trope for these kinds of games that instead of the usual quests and tasks to kill stuff you'll get quests and tasks to help NPCs, and instead of becoming the one who saved the world you'll just become friends with characters you're helping.

Ha, judging by how many x rated games get launched on Steam, maybe. I am surprised at how many of these games launch. It's kinda crazy to me.
