These are some embarrassing descriptions of the classes listed.
Gunbreaker doesn't use a gun, it's a sword with exploding catridges. "Decent amounts of damage" is a weird way of saying "less damage than a DPS becaues it's a tank".
Mesmer is listed twice here, once incorrectly as Virtuoso is an elite spec of Mesmer, not Necromancer.
Dancer "excepts" in single-target and AoE damage? How about talking about how it has the lowest personal damage of all the DPS classes, while bringing more buffs to make up for this, instead of some meaningless line on ST/AoE.
This line deserves an award in journalism fluffing. "You have to manage your combos and rotate your skills properly if you truly want to maximize your damage and utility." is how literally every DPS class in FFXIV, not to mention every other game mentioned on this list, works.
Meanwhile, "Red Mags" are described as "a class that anyone can pick up fairly easily but it is slightly team reliant to output optimal damage." This statement better fits Dancer than Red Mage. But hey, at least Death Knight is on the list so we can cover both sword-wielders that use magic AND magic wielders that use a sword.
Look, I love SWTOR and, specifically, Smuggler, but he don't belong on this list. Next to something like LoTR:O's Warden or Rift's Chloromancer, Guild Wars' Mesmer(moreso the GW 1 version, but meh) ...
Three pages in and no mention of the original version of the Loremaster in LotRO, Disappointing.

So many unique, great classes that didn't make the list! Kids these days.
Not only using burning pine cones as a weapon but dual-wielding sword and staff AND the epic quest to get that legendary ability.

Hello, the article is decent but the Virtuoso is not a necromancer in GW2, it is a Mesmer elite specialization. Apologies if somebody already pointed it out.

To me the Loremaster summed up everything Turbine was going to do 'lore wise' aptly enough. "Oh yeah you can be a mage with flaming balls of fire, here are your pine cones mate!"
It took several years for them to even begin to do something wrong lore wise as far as I am concerned and I still don't know a MMO that sticks to its lore source more competently.

Not sure I agree with this. I played LoTRO in closed beta and then when it released. They originally said there was not going to be any magic, no wizards, etc. In the game, they don't even call magic skills magic, it is called "tactical".
The Loremaster was a clear magic user, throwing fireballs, summoning creatures. Nobody else in the lore does that except wizards. I thought they broke the lore at that point.
Of course, I also thought the Loremaster was the most fun class

Well, how much time do you have? This is a story as long as your arm, as a member of Tolkien websites I have had to defend the fact that there was going to be a game at all. Having solo player games was bad enough, having one where you played with other players and (Ainur forbid!) get involved in THE story was an anathema for some fans.
Magic is not the domain purely of the Istari, there are many examples among Elves less among Dwarves and even less among Men. But as to what type of magic, yes what you talk of tends to make one think of Istari.
But Lore Masters used powders and pine cones, they were more like alchemists and the summoned creatures were their actual pets. However as they go up levels the "magic" becomes more obvious. So it was a "best fit" in my eyes good gameplay and animations with as little magic as possible. It was not until the Rune Keeper that the classes left behind a solid basis in good lore.
If I ever have a problem with that these days I just mention The Hobbit films and any Tolkien buff (me included) stomps of in a rage.

I think Loremaster was pushing the boundaries but never crossing them, they simply used everything nature provided to aid them by any means necessary. I think Turbine put in great effort to create a thematically strong class and succeeded very well, still fitting LotR lore. The class does get more magical the higher you level but imo still within the reasonable.
That combined with its strong mechanics, unique position in groups besides the usual trinity and very, very high skill ceiling made it a joy to play back in the day. I also remember other players always being happy to see a LM join a group or seeing them in action, I had tons of great reactions just playing one. Awesome class, on every level.

This article has a good premise but then just totally misses the boat.
I think the top ten MMO games with Unique Classes would be much better.
Warhammer Online
Vanguard
Everquest
City of Heroes
Shadowbane
Lord of the Rings Online
Dark Age of Camelot
Star Wars Galaxies
Guild Wars
Rift
I'd put age of Conan and the Final Fantasy games as honorable mentions and SWOTOR wouldn't even make the cut personally.
WAR first? Why?
Also, this article reminded me how people compare vanilla factions and the faction which is the least vanilla, some 10%, is an "outstanding achievment".

Every class is this game has it's own mechanic to it. The bright wizards use fire but can blow themselves up unless they manage it. The squig herders can actually jump inside their squigs and are one of if not the most unique pet class. The archmage use a yin and yang healing and damage specialty. The marauder can change his arms to become different weapons. Just to mention a few.
This game had some pretty big issues like all the RVR zones and having battle grounds which was counter intuitive and felt half finished when it released but the public quest idea was awesome and I thought it had some of the most unique classes I had ever seen.

The Dancer is not a unique class. Star Wars Galaxies had a Dancer Class as well as a Musician Class. Pre-NGE the purpose of the Entertainer(Dancer or Musician) was to remove exhaustion from players and apply buffs.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Squig Herder was a laugh, really liked doing the Orc quests with him, the Ironbreaker was my favourite as we could kick Chaos of precipices, a true joy.
Some were more unique than others. WH and WE aren't anything special, just Rogue combo system. But overall?
Yeah, it is a fun game with rather unique classes. The mere moment - moment is very fun here. More / better PvE would go far, but meh.
Well to further elaborate on that I think you could be unique in different areas. Like say gameplay, aesthetics, abilities, even sounds.
I think another even more all encompassing list would be the games where you could make the most unique characters. That to me is much more interesting. Not only taking into account classes, or even the lack of classes and having something classless where you build your character with abilities you pick but including races and factions etc as well.
Having the freedom to pick or edit every aspect of your class, abilities, race, faction, customize the way you look, like what you could do in City of Heroes, makes for really unique characters. A game that let players have freedom in all these aspects would be something I would love to play.
I also fired up Neverwinter Nights 2 and was playing on a Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles server recently and the diversity of builds you can make in that game is amazing. They let you customize your appearance as well too.
Warhammer also had three different masteries that each class could choose from as well.
If I had to pick a game for it's ability to make the most unique character though I would go with City of Heroes.
I find the original list baffling though. Like how do you pick the Sith Inquisitor over say the DAoC Animist, WAR Squig Herder, or even the Everquest Enchanter? Let alone include smuggler from SWOTOR as well...

What with Smuggler? He(+ his pair, Agent) is one of the most unique SWTOR classes. I am taking cover, Stealth Healer etc into context. With that said, Aion's Aethertech was mentioned and that reminded me. Vanguard and PowerTech probably should've been mech classes. PT is at least fun with Shoryukens, Vang is silly. Regardless, both would work much better in a mech.
As for WAR, it can be in top 10, sure, but no way does it deserve to be above Everquest(any), Vanguard, City of Heroes and such. Rift is a contender as well.

Well I would make the case that Everquest actually dilutes it's own uniqueness by having multiple versions of it. Vanguard takes a lot of inspiration from it. They all take inspiration from MUDs and AD&D.
For instance they have Death Knight on this list and that is almost as derivative as a warrior to me. Tons of games have Shadow Knights, Dark Knights, Death Knights, DreadKnight, etc.
You have a point about cover being pretty unique in MMOs but I had already played dozens of games with it and it didn't even register for me. Other than that the smuggler is pretty generic and doesn't even do anything like slicing in SWG.
I would also agree with powertech and mech classes being pretty rare and unique.
WAR really tops it for me with the bright wizard who can blow himself up otherwise he's just a basic fire mage. Squig herder is also really unique with it's pet and the ability to get inside it but you can see where it draws from rangers. Marauder could change his arm into weapons, etc.
You might be right and it might not be the best pick for the top but I think WAR really did something to make it's classes stand out. I think WAR is a much better pick than a Red Mage anyway, much like the rest of my list.
Edit: After thinking about smuggler a bit more the cover mechanic was pretty meh anyway since you could make cover anywhere with an ability and it was pretty much just like kneeling in SWG only SWG you could go prone as well...
Like I said in the above post I would go with City of Heroes for most unique character anyway.
