    Shadowbane on steam is published by a Chinese company and the server times are for China and the monetization is crap with buying gold and banes. Also key cloning and massive cheating that the company does nothing about.

    I used to play a Shadowbane Emulator back in 2017 called Magicbane but I think that is toast now. Trying Shadowbane Reforged to see how that goes.

    Edit: Well it let me make a character but I couldn't log into the server. The steam version looks pretty bad and I know Magicbane ended up being overrun by Chinese cheaters and I bet it will be the same. This also isn't a game you go in expecting to solo at all. You need to guild up or get rolled. Think that's it for me trying this again. Had fun back in 2017 on that magicbane server for a month. don't think it's worth the 12 bucks on steam tbh. I did get that Shadowbane Reforged to work and logged in and started playing... don't think I'll do anything serious though.

    Edit 2:

    The steam version is utter trash. You have to pay 300 dollars for a bane to even attack other players cities. The key cloning means you will be targeted by some nub with 10 characters who instant kills you. Don't even bother.

    As it should be. Gameplay considerations should always trump fundamentalist lore zealotry in, wait for it, games.

    It's ideal if the gameplay is also lore congruent but when push comes to shove you err on the side of gameplay.

    The Loremaster class was created recognizing the necessity for magic using classes and was then adapted as much as possible to make the skills seem low rather than high magic.

    I found all the fretting about whether they "broke the lore" or not in the LotRO forums back in those days with some very aggressive lore zealots to be very obnoxious.

    It kind of soured me permanently to the "lore first" crowd whom I still view with suspicion to this day whether we're talking Tolkien magic or Star Wars Jedis or anything else in any IP they seek to "protect". They're like self-appointed morality police except they police lore instead of morality but with the same obnoxious, fascist tendencies.

    In case you or anyone else wanted to know how I really feel about it :)

     I disagree. Turbine took the easy road instead of coming up with creative lore bound ideas for combat. Why did the Lore Master have to be a combat character, why couldn't it been a buff a debufff class with no combat ability at all.

    The combat class should've been true to the lore. Battle hardened class in the Human , Dwarf and ELves, with more trickster class in hobbits. To say Samwise was some great "Gaurdian" is nonsense, even in his later tales with the necromancer.

    There is so many ways to make the combat less generic.

    The Loremaster is more akin to Pathfinder's Alchemist or Investigator. It's just that Lore deals with more fantastical stuff. Not a magician at all.

    Now, Rune Keeper or being able to play a Beornling or a Calaquend? Yeah, I would be more worried about those than about the Lore tbh. Then again, take a look at the Shadow of Mordor(et al). O.o

    The Loremaster is more akin to Pathfinder's Alchemist or Investigator. It's just that Lore deals with more fantastical stuff. Not a magician at all.

    Now, Rune Keeper or being able to play a Beornling or a Calaquend? Yeah, I would be more worried about those than about the Lore tbh. Then again, take a look at the Shadow of Mordor(et al). O.o
    I tried the Runekeeper but never liked the play style. I liked Minstrel and Burglar a lot but Loremaster was my main from day one.

    Agreed. Rune Keeper was ... weird. And, to be honest, I preferred WAR's Rune Priest by far. Then again, from the gameplay side, I preferred WAR in general. LoTRO? Beautiful lore and audiovisuals(except our character models, but that horse is really deadbeat by now), but not actually that fun.

    Turning MMO classes into grey goo "bring the player not the class" has ruined a large part of this genre for me. It no longer feels like an RPG, just an MMO action game with numbers that go up.






    Aww it must stink to have a such a bad opinion. So mad that the best MMO right now ( and the only one worth playing in the past 10 years let's be honest) is getting top list recognition. FF14 will continue to grow & you cry more hehe ❤️

    Only problem with a class with "no combat ability at all" is that all progression is based around killing things.  No combat, no XP.  That would mean a character totally reliant on grouping to advance.  How does a non-combat character even progress to level 5, much less max level?  Grouping doesn't exist at the low end game.  It might make sense from a lore perspective, but it would be unworkable from a game perspective.

    I dont get the sense this is a good list.

    Reading the comments confirms these mostly arent actually very original classes.

    The Blood Mage in Vanguard is definitely something I'd love to see in other games, as is the Mesmer from Guild Wars. I havent played GW2.

    Blood Mages healed with lifetaps. They fully exploited the special feature of Vanguard that every character had an offensive and an defensive target, something I havent seen in other games. Blood Mages had many other interesting abilities, too. The second most important was probably symbiotes. You always had to craft items beforehand, the symbiotes, so you could buff people with these special buffs.

    I havent played much Guild Wars, but in the very short time I did, I loved the Mesmer. Its a specialized anti-mage mage that focused on disrupting other players.

    I also agree that Vanguard had great class implementations in general. Everything felt "right".
