I seem to recall their last MMO, Titan, was going to put Blizzard back on top of the scene and was almost finished and...was canceled and the assets rehashed into what they finally delivered, Overwatch.
And in the first couple years Overwatch was the "next big thing". It was a WoW level success.
Do it "again"? Sorry, but why should I care if they ALREADY DID IT ONCE? Hence I already HAVE such a game.
WoW is no longer the cultural force it once was. It’s not the king anymore. It turned into something lame. To do it again, Blizzard would have to produce something that is not just a game but a phenomenon. I’m talking about something that inspires and drives the industry. I’m talking about something with 12 million subscribers in the US alone.
What's left to war over? Ukraine? The cold wars are dead. It's a BRIC money war now. If blizzard can capitalize on a pay to play MMO that can hold the interest of its player base for 20 years, they can compound those in game earnings into their own stocks. That's a win, win for blizzard. /cheers to the future of virtual patriots who will transform vestments and skill indexes across the globe.

Kinda true. But even with this, a live service game, you can get original experience. I still don't get the hype over some new things.

You know what, I finally got around to listening to the stream and it actually got me somewhat interested to start paying attention to what this is about.
Despite it's huge popularity, the survival genre never really has seen a large scale, higher quality production to date.
New World was going to be that game, at least when first announced and well, you know...
There actually is a pretty large opportunity here for Blizzard to pull together the best of the genre's elements, blend them with some magic from their MMORPG and FPS titles and create another new phenomenon in the survival space.
Of course, this isn't the Blizzard of 20 years ago, so probably a long shot that they pull it off well, but definitely there's big, underserved market for such a title I think.

I feel like they have been biding their time looking for a MMO they can make that will work and not compete with WoW. I think anyone making a AAA MMO should take this game seriously. I don't think Blizzard would reenter the MMO space without much calculation.
Well, it sounds like Blizzard has a lot of exciting features planned for their new game! With multiplayer open world, PVE, dungeons, raids, and PVP all included, it definitely sounds like they're aiming to create something more than just your typical survival game. Of course, whether or not they'll be able to live up to the hype and make the next great MMO remains to be seen, but we can always hope for the best and look forward to what they have in store!

Atlas was going to be that game before New World. A high quality survival MMO is definitely an underserved market and they could really pull something off with a good game here. If not Activision Blizzard some studio will eventually.
You're right about the opportunity being there.

You know what Atlas and New World have in common with other than there completely low population numbers? PVP based vs PVE based (with PVP on side)

LOL 20 years biding their time? They sure are patient LOL. More likely they are just completely imcompetent and keep misreading the market since WoW. Their core products, Warcraft,Starcraft,Diablo have all been left behind floundering compared to when they were very popular. They havent been able to duplicate the process since.
What I find interesting, is they talking about hiring these really key positions. Why are they not able to pull from there existing staff? They have to farm from outside the company one everything, 1000's of employees and they dont already have these key people in place?
Ultimately I dont really care how many or few people play the game I play. All that really matters is if I enjoy the game. Granted, in MMOs that includes the requirement for at least having SOME population.
I like some massively popular games like Baldurs Gate (very popular back then, anyway) and I like some far less popular titles like Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (which was a failure at release, though its more successful recently).
WoW I dont like. I like the core ideas and concepts, but I find the graphics butt ugly, I also dont like certain details (like having to stand still while casting spells), and it seems to me the game was made too easy in the end.
Still I understand why WoW was such a commercial success. But I dont think Blizzard or any other company will ever manage to pull off a success like WoW.
Sure, there might be future MMORPGs which have even more players than WoW had in its best time. But that will be because at that point there will be more MMO players overall in the first place.
WoW was the Ford Model T of MMOs, and Ford never repeated the success of the Model T either.
This isn't the Blizzard that made WoW a success. This is Activision Blizzard.
I could write a huge paragraph with all the scandals, controversy and lawsuits. Needless to say I used to be a huge fan and bought every game they made and played them for years. Now I consider Blizzard a shadow of it's former self more akin to a Blizzard skin suit Activision wears. I expect some new scandal or bad press before a good game.
Is it possible sure? Highly unlikely would be where I toss my hat in the ring.
This, Blizzard from back then, simply doesn't exist anymore. Most, if not all, of those people are gone.
ActiVision has been pulling the strings for a long time now and not for the better.
The whole Diablo Immortal thing should have put up enough red flags by now, for people to sink in what is happening at Blizzard and the direction they are going.
Diablo 4 is going to be a dumpster fire when it launches, when people's rose tinted glasses have worn off and see how unoptimized and buggy mess of a game it will be.
Just play "Turtle WoW", thousands and thousands of people play it !
It's clasic WoW with several convenient improvements that are great with things that doesn't piss players off..... Huge amounts of good changes.
IT'S FREE.... Everyone loves it and it's PACKED SOLID with players 24/7.
It is vanilla WoW based actually, with excellent enhancements that don't clash with that original, and is decently populated as you say. It's an excellent option for those looking for such, while being entirely irrelevant to those not.
I don't think they'll "do it again." For one thing, as previously said, they aren't the same people. For another, this is a different time and place than it was back then. And for yet another thing, there's nothing new in there so far, and I doubt that there's going to be. It all stuff that's been done before picked and mixed, which seems to be the "new new" in gaming now. That usually doesn't work out better than anything else.
It might be a good game for those who find they like it, and it might be successful (or not), but I don't see it being the huge success that WoW was (relatively speaking).
I think Blizzard will do decently well. They did decentlly well in everyone of their previous title.
I remember playing diablo 3 at relesae. And it is a huge disappointment. There is no endgame. A while later, they released the paragon system and add several improvement.
It might not be a huge success but I'm confident in their ability to push out a decent game with decent population.
Say what you will and globally hate them as much as you want but they don't usually swing and miss even with their most obnoxious releases like Diablo Immortal which all sane PC and console players hate but is making them buttloads of cash from the mobile zombie crowd.
I'm going to go with maybe they'll have another hit.

Multiplayer open world, PVE, Dungeons, Raids, PVP. It sounds like more than a typical survival game. Will Blizzard do it again? Will Blizzard make the next great MMO, the king of MMOs?
Blizzard already made that "the king of MMOs". WoW was an unbelievable success.
Albeit I personally dont like it for various reasons, but mainly really the ugly graphics. I want my characters to look realistic, or at least of a stylized beauty. WoW character design is just ugly and absurd.
The question is will this genre actually prosper. Or is it currently simply out of fashion.

High end Graphics are the downfall of mmorpgs, What is needed is a full game where developers concentrate on making a game !
Throughout the years, I found many companies don't have a clue on programming a game, yet they go for the best graphics.
Going for graphics is stupid and a HUGE waste of resources.
