Ram advice for replacement/upgrade

ArglebargleArglebargle Member EpicPosts: 3,465
After reading the 'Memory's gotten cheap' thread, I got the urge to upgrade my ram.  Last year I picked up an Alienware Ryzen Edition R10 real cheap, but with only 16gb of Ram.  That's soon going to be an issue, imo, so I am looking to upgrade.  Dell's memory prices are .... well, Dellish.  As AMD processors are a bit more picky, and this is my first AMD in quite a while, I'm not sure what replacement 32 (or even 64) GB kit to pick up.  I'd just add a Dell 16GB stick if they weren't proprietary and stratospherically priced.

So what are good options?

What hardware do you have now?  Most notably, do you need DDR4 or DDR5?

What processor do you have?  This can affect the clock speeds that are officially supported.  Speeds a little higher than officially supported are likely to still work, but it's up to you whether you want to go that route.

How many memory slots does your motherboard have, and how many of them are filled?  This probably doesn't matter very much, as I'd normally lean toward buying two new memory modules to replace whatever was there before.

Does your motherboard take normal memory DIMMs, or does it use SODIMMs (typically for laptops) instead?  Or worse, did Dell decide to solder some memory directly to the motherboard, as some laptops do?  It would be rare to do that in a desktop, but it wouldn't completely shock me if Dell did.

If you have what I think you do, then you could get something like this if you want 32 GB:

    https://www.newegg.com/team-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820331604

Or this if you want 64 GB:

    https://www.newegg.com/mushkin-enhanced-64gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820226916

But you should check what you have, as it's no good to get memory that won't fit your motherboard because Dell decided to do something weird.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800 8-Core Processor, 4 memory slots, DR4 (DDR4-3400 HyperX), not soldered in, RA 6800XT.  Fairly standard late era R10.

Mostly want to be careful as the AMD processors are said to be a bit more particular about ram.  The Dell price for a 16gb stick is more than the 32gb link you sent.  Yay Dell.

Upgraded!  Linked memory works fine so far.  Thanks and a tip of the hat.

This is about what I have too, except it's a Ryzen 9 5950X, RX 6800XT graphics, 32gb mem. Not cheap, but it works great. Now I wish I had gotten 64gb.

Went with the 64GB set, as my previous computer had maxed at 32gb, and I felt the need to be upgrady.   I do some audio stuff as well, so it can sometimes actually be very useful.

Also remember when the ram market dried up and it became unaffordium, so buying in now seems like a good plan. Too many companies talking about bottlenecking their own production to drive prices up.

Buying 64 GB today only costs a little over $100.  For that matter, it's likely cheaper in total to buy 32 GB when you bought or built the computer and then also buy 64 GB today and discard the old 32 GB than it would have been to buy 64 GB at the start when you got the computer.
