I can't really be mad at Phil since it was on gamepass. That in itself saved alot of people from this game.

Gamers can be fickle. If Starfiled rocks people will quickly forget. What have you done for me lately is all we care about. I'm going back to my Jedi game. It's new and the game play rocks and I'm having a blast.

Honestly, I think no matter how 'good' Starfield ends up being, someone will find something to complain about. Cyberpunk 2077 is a prime example. The game did deserve a large amount of criticism it first got, but I dont think people can still admit that its a GREAT deal better now than it was before. I guess they'll probably be more lenient on Bethesda games though since players always end up 'fixing' their games for them in the end.

You think that it being stable/functional now is something deserving of praise?  Is it a great deal better?  Sure. But you don't get credit now for the game performing as it should have at release.

    Lets focus on the process:

"I kind of revist our process. I think back to the announcement of 60 frames per second, and then we weren't shipping 60 frames per second."

So they thought the game would do 60 when it did not, how could that be, we are not talking about PC's here, calling that out as a lie.

"There are quality issues, and we're working on those, but a fundamental piece of feedback I get is that the game isn't realizing the creative vision that it had for its players. That doesn't feel like a, 'hey, just delay it', that feels like the game had a goal to do one thing and when players are actually playing, they're not feeling that."

What he is effectively saying here is we don't think a short delay is going to be enough to fix these problems but we launched it anyway. Disgraceful.

They admitted they left the studio to its own thing and did not send over devs to help them integrate into the MS ecosystem. Not sure why this would happen. Seems like a big part of a studio making a first party game for them.

Bottom line is the Xbox brand really needs to get their first party situation sorted.
There are a couple of titles that will be fantastic.

There needs to be a sustainability plan for long term growth and development.
The undisclosed deal that was floated before the ActiBlizz announcement would have been a better fit.
I agree with your entire comment, but especially this part. Xbox needs to make their users feel like first class citizens and that isn't happening. The foundation of the platform needs to be high quality titles delivered properly. I'm very curious what the undisclosed deal floated prior to ABK was.

The problem with Redfall, and some other recent releases that have seen lukewarm receptions, is that Microsoft dramatically overhyped them. They should get a half-pass on Redfall and Ghostwire, but they don't get one for Minecraft Legends, which was also overhyped and underdelivered.

Some things I think would make Xbox stand out in the long term. Those are all things Microsoft Xbox can do while still offering cross platform access and play.

    - Solid first party titles offered as limited time exclusives and always on GamePass.

    - GamePass Friends and Family: This is in the works, but the email today announcing a GamePass referral program really set wrong with me. I don't care if they have a referral program, I don't want to play pyramid reward schemes. What I want is for them to offer F&F GamePass globally.

    - Xbox Live Gold: Get rid of it. Stop charging an internet access feel. This is 2023 and doing so is greedy and stupid. The offerings over the last several months have been anemic (and I'm being nice). All of those titles would be better as permanent GamePass offerings. Do this before Sony does. Be the leader.

    - GamePass: First party titles and their DLC should always be available on the service. DLC/Expansions should not be an extra purchase.

    - GamePass: While subscribed to GamePass, first party game service subscriptions should be included (would not include the game cash stipends).

    - Xbox Platform: All first party purchases should be Xbox Play Anywhere. That most titles that offer the feature aren't first party titles should be a huge embarrassment for Xbox.

I don't think that's it at all. MS keep saying, don't judge us on console sales, don't judge us on anything but our services. MS wants Gamepass to be their real win, that's their game services. IMO Redfall was a panic release to keep GP going strong. It was a rough 2022 for releases. 2023 needs to be strong to keep GP growing the way MS wants it. If very few people bought the game at $70 and instead subbed GP to play Redfall. They would have been over the moon.

My thoughts. MS is trying to break the norm of gaming. MS practices with how they make money on games, has turned out to be some of the most fair practices for gamers as well. IMO I'm sick of how Sony makes money on games. MS is missing just one thing content. My hopes is MS wins at what they are doing, just so Sony has a company to compete with, so they need to fight over who gets our money. IMO, that's the biggest win, every gamer could have.

Dude, I can appreciate your hopes and ideals but they released a trash game that they knew was completely trash and in dire need of months more work. If they are missing content they can use some of their billions to set up more studios.

How would you feel if you went to a restaurant and someone took a literal dump on your plate but the service was excellent?

Aside from the rather uninspiring alien enemies, I thought Prey was the closest thing we've ever gotten to a System Shock 3.  Deus Ex has similarities, but it didn't really include the horror elements.

I think Arkane should stick to creating those single player experiences.  Their expertise does not seem to have translated well to GaaS, and that's okay.  We don't really need more of those anyways.

every person involved in making of that game knew full well the quality and performance and issues it had before putting it on sale for 70 dollars.

Plus the game started development before Microsoft even bought them.
Yet, people were very quick to blame EA for Warhammer Online's fail. The same situation.

Just goes to show that this is just about studio's public image, more than about anything else.

Are you suggesting that it wasn't at least significantly responsible?

That is a red herring (a relevance fallacy) and, while true, has nothing to do with Microsoft, Bethesda, or Arkane. EA's primary connection to Microsoft is through GamePass, which I think is providing a struggling company a lifeline and increasing their presence and relevance in a very saturated market.

Not really relevant to the Redfall launch, but EA is the big publisher I wish Microsoft had tried to purchase before ABK. I realize King is a big part of the package, but EA just seems a better fit in the library than ABK (outside of CoD alone).

Significantly? No. They gave Mythic ample time after reviving them from half dead. It was just a cocktail of reasons, the main one being poor state of Mythic.

It is unrelated, true. I was just showing how different reaction of people are to the "good company"(Phil Spencer led Xbox) vs the "big bad company"(AB, EA etc). I don't like this inconsistency.

Maybe they should I don't know start hiring based on Merit and not be so concerned with diversity boxes....
This was a project that Arkane started prior to being acquired by Microsoft, one which Microsoft allowed them to finish without interruption.

    Get help.
I was going to say something about the obsessive and unsubstantiated political theme that bad quality is caused by diversity that gets echoed here by a particular crowd but I get tired of being the only one who does.

Good to see someone else call out this brainless horseshit.

Agreed. Discussions have become like sports fans encircling their wagons, only one particular team just loves to inject irrelevant political conjecture into it.

Historically, big publishers have been associated with crushing creativity in the name of maximizing revenue. There is some truth to that. However, since the advent of early access, the indie dev bloom, crowd-funding, and mass corporate consolidation, it seems apparent to me that these problems plague both small and large companies alike. We can come up with examples at every level of size and scope.

Microsoft just needs to manage their in house divisions better, period. There is a middle ground between crushing oversight and willy nilly freedom. They need to find that. They also need to set a baseline for standards, which may sound easy, but is one of the flaws I think plagues Microsoft. This is a problem with their established studios not just the newly acquired lot. See Minecraft Legends for an example of an overhyped flop from one of their flagship game studios.
