After more than 20 hours with Arkane Austin's latest Redfall, Bradford came away incredibly frustrated and disappointed. From its earliest moments, Redfall fell flat. With the uninspired world building to the lackluster gunplay and brain-dead enemies, almost every aspect of Redfall was a miss.

Out of 96 reviews on Metacritic, this is the lowest.

    So edgy :)

The loot really is underwhelming so go with the first statement. I think what he meant by the second statement is for what there is, the loot in vampire nests is typically higher level and rarity.

Loot is just higher level and rarity versions of the same weapons that do the same thing over and over There are really no special weapons that do extra or unique things and the perks on purple or gold weapons are just incremental increases on what you get with green and blue.

There are just no "wow, this assault rifle really rocks!" moments.

All of the legendary weapons do special things but there's no guaranteed way to make them drop outside if main missions that grant them or rook storms. You're guaranteed legendaries for rook storms.

There should be a lot more variance in general weaponry and more legendary weapons since most are the same just higher level, but a good legendary is always worth a higher level drop.

To think, we could've gotten Prey 2 with human-Typhon hybrids (much more interesting than the pure Typhons), or a spiritual successor to the Dishonored franchise.

Just a swing and a miss.  Hopefully this encourages Microsoft to nudge Arkane back into their wheelhouse.

The obligatory 3.0 score that balances out the completely ridiculous 9.5 kind of Destiny scores? Seriously, the review framework on this site (and in general) is in desperate need of an overview (get rid of scores). While Redfall has a stack of problems and is a bit blah, line it up and compare with other games that have scored a 5 - 6 and it is amazing how inconsistent this site is with just about anything (especially monetization bias).

For me, every ridiculous review score here makes it harder to even take anything the author says seriously. For example, the "the loot is bland" followed by "there is some great loot to be had". The article reads like the game really wasn't that bad, but the author felt like they needed to make an example of it. Maybe that isn't what the author intended, but that is exactly how it reads to me.

To be fair, Game Mag also gave it a 3.0 on a ten point scale, and IGN/GameSpot only gave it a 4.0.

The average is 58, and the highest review score was a 9.0, so this isn't the most extreme review of the game, actually.

No, merely tied for the worst lol.

It also has a bit of a feel of not having gone too far into the game.

For example the no-score "after 100%" video review I linked in the other thread talks about the AI thoroughly and goes so far as to compare the bad AI implementation to Prey's. which was critiized for the same reason, in that in both games Arkane uses AI as a way to increase difficulty at the higher levels.

The AI is indeed dumb but only for a while since it ramps up in intelligence and aggressiveness at higher levels.

That reviewers' complaint is that it's too easy at first but actually unfair in  how tough it gets toward the end game one-shotting you from offscreen.

He's one of the few reviewers that points out the bad AI at both extremes because he actually played the whole game,

Almost everyone else, including this review, talks only about the early levels stupid AI.

At any rate I think a 3 for this is bonkers especially in the context of the generous scores this site gives to P2Win garbage.

If you want to score this, something in the 6 range +/- 0.5 is the correct range. But I would rather they have no score at all and instead let me know details like the AI being stupid in the early levels and too tough in the higher ones. That's more useful insightful info.

On Steam, it's currently 32% positive. It's not like he gave it a 3/10 and everyone else is giving it an 8/10 or 9/10.

I do think that 3/10 is the lowest review score in the history of this site, though. League of Angels got a 4/10, and I think something more recent tied it at 4/10.

I think this should be a F2P it is definitely not a $70 game. I played it on gamepass and i loaded it up a few times after and was like nah and just shut it down. While the graphics are not terrible the graphics
/ movement just feel very old. I have also been busy with Jedi Survivor so that is another part of the reason why i haven't given redfall more time

I don't necessarily disagree 3 might be lower than it seems to me, but the most extreme score is the 9.0, not the 3.0, based on variance from the average.

Nah, Say Say Girls got a 1.3 rating. There are a few others that got less than a 4 and several more scored a 4, but as you'd expect, most games score between 5 and 9.

It is a wonder a trillion dollar company could put out a title like this. I get if this was a 3rd party title by some 1/2 baked studio. I would get it. Really is embarrassing.

I wonder if Redfall will end up falling like Anthem. Fixed up about a half a year in, but too late for extended gaming. I snagged Anthem at a very reduced price six months in, and it played just fine. Suffered from the Gaas model that didn't deliver on the promised extra stuff. But otherwise played pretty well.

Redfall is high priced, hyped up, and under delivering. Even folks who have game pass (see above) are deeming it not worth the time investment. Given the PC problems, I wouldn't touch it for a while anyway. Things may change for it, but will it be too late for a Resurrection spell?

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

If I was MS I would unlaunch the game like FF did. Rework it and and re-release it. Give everyone their money back.

Well, many sites have scores. Part of the issue, and I believe mmorpg.com experimented with this, is that a lot of people like scores. It's an immediately recognizable way to see where something is as far as it's quality.

I never listen to scores but instead just read the review. That tells me more. Especially since someone's 4.8 could very well be a 9.5 for me. and vice versa.

My thought is that if there is to be a score it should be " x out of 5." In that way it's a lot easier to feel what a score really is.

I would point out the core gameplay of Anthem was never exactly it's problem. Surrounding performance issues, story issues, lack of content, and severe imbalances in the way stats were calculated all contributed to it eventually failing as they were not able to salvage the title out of the corner it'd been hurriedly built into. The fundamental moment to moment of moving around and fighting things was fine.

This does serve to hep look at the sort of division comes up in perspectives of users though. Have to acknowledge that two people may even be looking at similar parts of a game, but focused on different details that lead them to different conclusions. Even before considering how different preferences and standards may affect things.

EDIT: Bit of why I'm hands off on this game and topic in general. The fact there are issues is known, and we have a few threads now that mostly just boil down to people leaning on if the issues bother them enough or not to get in the way of enjoying the game. It'd only be a subject of opinion to say one enjoys the game in spite of issues, or dislikes the game because of issues, as they can be up-played or downplayed in either direction as it happens so often with other games.

Yes. You add "influencers" (both print and media) to this and then their followers parroting what they hear about something they have no hands-on experience with and an unstoppable social media avalanche is created making what is said about a game very suspect after some time.

It's easy to see for yourself, which is always best, with F2P games but not so much with B2P ones so there's a built in bias against games with a paywall since there are fewer hands-on opinions circulating.

"Waiting for the reviews" as you often hear people put their faith on is also a tricky proposition since many reviewers are also influenced by the buzz and consciously or unconsciously tend to go with the flow.

Short of seeing for yourself, zeroing in on a couple of reviewers you trust is the best you can hope for.

I agree with your review. I am hopeful a fix will come, or even a major 2.0 upgrade.

I believe it is salvageable, and even expandable.

The last I heard Microsoft is on it (not sure if that is good or bad ).

This is the sort of score unfinished "launches" need to get:

"even on Game Pass I'd recommend simply playing Arkane's other titles"

Exactly, play the games that are polished not the ones rushed out the door, we are already starting to see the idea it is "free" on a pass being used as an excuse for poor quality and it is not like we have never been here before, I am sure many of you remember that excuse when F2P arrived.
