Amazon Games and Middle-earth Enterprises announced this morning that the two have entered into a partnership to make a brand new Lord of the Rings-themed MMORPG. The upcoming MMO is in pre-production and is being made by the the Amazon Games Orange County team resposible for New World.

    Didn't they already have one of these and end up canceling it? BTW. Why not feed all the lore books and info into ChatGPT and just let it come up with the game? Probably better than most current game designs.

    So not being made by Smed's old San Diego team then.  

    Pre-production means a 2028 or beyond release date at best.....

    Was pretty sure amazon bungled this once already and bailed on it. I recall Smed might have been involved ir something?

     Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed.  Current mmo's grouping: tinder.  swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

    Amazon and another Studio were working on it and had a falling out between the 2 studios. So all Amazon could do was to shut production down. I would be interested in Amazon is starting from the ground up, or if they have retained anything from the first game.

    Amazon and another Studio were working on it and had a falling out between the 2 studios. So all Amazon could do was to shut production down. I would be interested in Amazon is starting from the ground up, or if they have retained anything from the first game.

    If I recall from some news articles, Amazon was partnering with a third party studio they don't own, so I would not expect them to keep any access to source or assets unless they bought them, or Embracer actually own the source/assets (based on whatever previous licensing deal they had with that studio) and then licensed them to Amazon. I doubt that too because licensing agreements with rights holders rarely ever encompass source and Embracer bought the rights from Saul Zantz after the project had started.

    It is somewhat interesting to me how much Embracer owns with no industry or government sabre rattling involved at all. They are so huge and own so much, it's hard to list them all without digging into their subsidiaries and all that they own.

    I'm just waiting for the CMA/UK to realize they don't even own their precious Lord of the Rings anymore and to issue an ultimatum to Embracer that they're no longer allowed to use the IP without prior approval from them. :lol:

    Their game will be set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, featuring the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.

    They were also very clear to add:

    Separately, Amazon Studios produces the hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth and is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development with Amazon Games.

    I'm curious if they'll use Lumberyard, Unreal, a custom in house engine, or what they will choose. I'm also curious if MMORPG means just that or do they mean "mmo" and "rpg" as more marketing concepts than genre descriptions.

    Amazon sucks at managing huge IPs (see Wheel of Time and Rings of Power). Like they really just create abominations. Add in clueless New World devs and the AGS that has no idea of how to manage Lost Ark?

    They are going to need a miracle of top end leads with enough freedom to do it right. I just don't see AGS giving developers much of a leash.

    I have yet been able to point at a game that had Amazons involvement that made me happy. More I see about Throne and Liberty makes me think the worse is yet to come.

    Lol there's already a Lords of the Rings Online MMO out. This is total monopolizing by Amazon who already have an MMO, New World, and now they want Standing Stone Games out of business, a typical example of Amazon Sauron trying to snuff out the SSG Shire. How is Amazon not being investigated for antitrust? Trolled by the big corporations again.

    I don’t really consider that a bad thing to be honest, for how good it looks New World runs extremely well. All the other stuff though? There is almost no way they can’t royally screw this one up.

    'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless. 

    It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

    It is just huge resource waste....'

    This had just better not effect Lotro, there will be hype beyond hype about this even if it launches as another shambles it could be a danger until then.
