The NGE alternative: SWG2? Shadowrun?:))

GlemoranGlemoran Member Posts: 68

When I started a topic about a new SWG that could offer us an alternative, I never have guessed someone - I think it was Xpaladin but I'm not sure so excuse me if I'm wrong - could point me in the right direction. And the mentioned direction is this one:

And here is a description od Shadowrun made by kefkah

"Cyberpunk kind of setting - borrowing heavily off of William Gibson writings save for the fact that it has trolls, elves, dwarves and such. Basically, in the future, magic comes back to the world meshing a futuristic blade runner type world with a bit of dungeons and dragons.

Players of the pen and paper took on "shadowruns" ie missions from shady agents of various backgrounds (Johnsons) that encompassed obejctives like milk runs and lead up to targetted strikes against major corporations (who pretty much run things). Dark, gritty and fast paced. No such thing as white knights - everyone was a touch of grey per se.

Games came afterwards. Pretty much the same though the SNES version broke quite a few rules in the p+p system ( a D6 system by FASA)..

Overall, a damn good setting, system and good play. DM'd it in RL for about 3 years and ran a play by post for 2.

Johnny Mnemonic with better plots and elves. :D"

...I just wonder if there are any (present/future) alternatives to NGE for us? thank you for infos.

Well Shayde first let's see what will happen...how they will translate their projects into reality (reality sucks sometimes:)

Anyway I will definitely give it a try...and for me a good Sci FI MMORPG might be Star Trek Online...we'll see about it too...I hope they learned something from SWG experience and won't make a game where you will just run everywhere killing rebel klingons, rebel romulans, borgs, in fact killing everybody with a phaser:)

A shadowrun MMo would be the one game I would jump to immediately I used to love playing the old game. However, I believe shadowrun was a stand alone game on the 360, I may be mistaken.  I was hopeful when I saw the posters for shadowrun on G4, only to find out it was just going to be a standard action game. For that matter, an MMO that lived in the world of Blade runner or any Cyberpunk influences would be really nice. anarchy Online seems to get close with the implant system and cybernetics, but just doesn't feel like true cyberpunk for some reason. (just my opinion)

How about an MMO based on Phillip Dick's stories where everything has some major twist to REALLY bug you.

I think you're right...I mean, I consider AO the best free MMORPG available - and I made extensive researches - (and also the best online game for 7,49 $/month), but if someone will want to re-create the William Gibson's world they should come with a lot more ideas than simply introduce some implants for your charachter...they should come with new quests, specific NPC's, a lot more professions and no aliens, of course...

And since I mentioned for me STO  might be a good alternative for SWG, I just have one nightmare:

SOE: Making Star Trek more Star Trekie!"

That would be indeed something pissing me off....I understand we must behave like civilised people and of course any company must be profitable, but if they won't leave me ANY alternative to play my favourites movies based games (except for choosing their childish vision of role playing)...only because they have enough money to buy exclusive rights for any license and franchise...that would be enough to make me a true Rebel...an anti-SOE activist or something (I know this is not yet invented)...

    Don't fool yourself.

    STO will not be sandbox.
    STO will be instance-oriented.
It will be strictly level based.
You'll get to run fed-ex quests for iconic NPCs.
You'll be able to do a quest, that will grant you your own ship (apropriate to your level) and 2000xp.
It will be placed into small, high-detail, top-notch graphics recreation of iconic scenes from series.
Persistent world will be minimal, if any at all.

STO is being designed from ground up to be iconic and startrekkie. It's the only way it can at least slightly penetrate the market.

Note: I didn't read the latest feature list, but I'm sure this is close to what you'll get.

That's looking at it glass half empty, especially since they're still fleshing out how it will go. I've seen it change month to month.

I'd have to say that Anarchy Online is about as similar to Pre-CU SWG as we can get right now.  After all, its the game that set the standard that SWG would later refine.  It has player housing, skill based professions, a similar combat style, and a crafting game.

Yeah its old, and no, its not exactly the same, but its also free for a year for just the base game.

Actually it's free for ever. I have a free account since february 2005. They keep posting me that I can upgrade for free but they are never deleting accounts. As far as I understood from forums, they say they prefere to have many satisfied players instead of a bunch of rioters (probably also because in the end everybody decides to pay in order to have acces to superior features).

elves, dwarves, trolls, comeon this is a sci fi game, they should be more creative, if anything this will be its biggest flaw.

Indeed we all hope they will be creative and succesfull...After all (except SWG we keep talking about) there are not so many Sci Fi MMORPG's to choose from...I mean there is Anarchy, Matrix, Neocron...what else?

And which one do you really like?

OMG!! no offense but that's the dumbest thing said so far....you've never heard of shadowrun if you say that, Shadowrun is an old pen and paper RPG set in teh distant futre.

A series of natural disators occur followed by magic returning to the world, the first sign were native american shamans calling on spirits to make themselves invincible when they took back america.
and second were dragons returning to earth(one even ran for president before being assasinated, and anotehr leads the yakuza in Japan)

one of the final stages were the meta humans coming into being, Trolls, Orcs, Dwarves, and Elves

Elves had the most sense of culture so they promptly conquered ireland and renamed it Tir Na Nog then they took the northern part of california and shared most of washington(the state) with the native american nations.

this land was alled Tir Tairgne(prolly missspelled)

it had a perfect combo of magic and cyberpunk.(take cyber implants your magic is weakened)

the problem is that the web site the OP posted will never EVER happen (sadly)

M$ has already started making their Shadowrun game....it's a multiplayer only FPS with simple CTF rules like unreal tourny. Only 3 races Human Troll and the Elves of Tir Tairgne(so shaman elves)

Oh and for info The Matrix was a creation of Shadowrun and the wachowski bros basterdized it. You even had to jack into it via a plug in your head.

Want to know about the world goto a book store and pickup a novel they started making new ones(really good to)

Go Sinloi. someone who knows the Sahdowrun world. The only problem is the game
planned by MS will have no similarity to the P+P game. A shame really as it is one of the best.

The game deals with the return of magic and possible consequences in very adult and mature ways. Themes
such as racism, persecution, class divides and injustice are what the whole theme is about. The world
would make an excellent MMORPG but it would have to be done correctly.

You are completely correct that they created the Matrix. The Matrix films are based somewhat loosely
on the tale at the back of the Matrix sourcebook called Halberstein's babies. This is where a scientist brings
children up from birth within the virtual reality. One of them realises that he is a prisoner of the virtual
world so hires a shadowrun team in the real world to rescue him and disconnect him.

Shadowrun Online will be made for PC and Xbox 360...this is the killing blow. It will be dumbed down for the console crowd and will have console controls ported half-ass for the PC, just like every other cross platform game.

If they ever made a Shadowrun MMORPG, I would cancel all my other subscriptions immediately, and probably even get 2 accounts for the game.

I miss playing the old games on the SNES/Genesis...god, they're still some of my favorite titles ever.

    Anyone remember....ABBACAB perchance...mwa ha ha

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

  • sinloisinloi Member UncommonPosts: 201

Sadly I will have to get Shadowrun for 360 even though they are messing up sortof how it should be played.

but if buy god they have riggers and vehicles I will be happy!! I might as well explain acouple other details as far as "classes" go

The game was skill based but it had I guess you could say classes I don't know much about teh system so if someone else knows more please step forward heh.

    The classes really are this

Street Samurai is the catch all term for a bad ass, could be john woo with guns, uma thurman with a sword, jet li with fists, or mix them all and bladed gun kata (but that would be silly)

Decker, they are teh hackers they plug their brain in and enter the matrix everything has a virtual representation and is done with programming. Best example I can give is from the new books, a hacker whose virtual representation is an anime angel girl had to get past an ICE(programs designed to protect systems) The ICE was cerebus class and true to it's name it looked like a three headed dog, the problem with cerebus's is that they have a triple redundancy problem so she exploited that....and programmed in the graphic of 3 bones just for fun so it made the dog nap and eat the 3 bones essentially it "attacked" the programm she fed it instead of her.

Rigger, ahhhh the wheel man, they also hook their brains up to things, but instead of the internet they perfer electronics, robotic drones that fly or crawl on spider legs, or up to a more high tech vehicle for quick getaways(they essentially become the vehicle)

Mage....um no explanaiton should be needed

Shaman think cleric or druid I guess (I prefer riggers so didn't read up much on magic)

Adept adepts use shamanistic or arcane power to enhance themselves mostly fighting unarmed, suffice it to say I guess think neo.

oh and no elves didn't take california, with america split cali turned to the one place it could....japan. so japan owns california...well most of it, and I say own because japan stopped being a country and became a corporation called "Japan Inc." And I forget if the Dragon taht ran for president was the same that had a late night talk show. lol

  • gladiatory2kgladiatory2k Member Posts: 79
That's why a shadowrun FRS is just disappointing. Shadowrun just screams for a full MMORPG. I would definitely play, just not sure if I wanted to go samurai or Hacker.

Maybe M$ could be pursuaded to do one...or who ever DOES own the rights.

I know this is OT for this forum, but this is just bringing back memories.

    Beware of Black Ice

  • GlemoranGlemoran Member Posts: 68

BTW, I am afraid it is obvious SOE has no intention of introducing a pre NGE server anytime soon. Otherwise they wouldn't try so much to bring together the two sides: the "RPG style" players and the "FPS style" players. What they are trying to do is to maximize the number of subscribers while minimizing the expenses.

  • GlemoranGlemoran Member Posts: 68
and I forgot to say: I don't think they will be able to succeed:)...simply because people ARE different enough and they will always like different games...
