When you upgrade a piece of gear at the blacksmith, and the item level is near a tier breakpoint, you can sometimes get very powerful upgrades for minimal gold and materials investment. Things such as +1 to a skill becoming +2 for eample.

It's really more of an advanced level thing unless you happen to have something with + skill levels on it for one or two skills you use and just shy of a breakpoint.
Then there's the cost. It was easy to throw gold and mats into it during the betta because everything was getting wiped anyway. But when we're playing for real, I'll probably want to be kind of cost-conscious since, unlike D3, you're not exactly showered with gold and mats in this game.
It's just handy to know that those breakpoints exist just in case I can make use of them if the RNG works out.
