I think many players like the idea of sandbox games, but then when they start playing do not like all the work needed, so the player base drops fast. I believe that hybrid MMO's are the way to go, because they give some structure and make things a little easier for the players and this keeps more players in the game.
When it comes to Sandbox MMORPGs, hybridizing is bastardizing.
The problems with designing Sandbox is multifold, but the first and prime problem is that they are not for gamers that want that Themepark experience. If a person isn't tired of that yet (Themepark), and that's what they want, they should stick with it. Their problem (Themepark again) is the same for Sandbox and anything else. CSs, cheats, RMT excesses, abusive players, and anything else that is bad for massively multiplayer games.
If we get that stuff fixed then we all start getting what we want.

Most players just don't understand when they have to figure out things by themself instead of being hand held by some quest lines.

Because in few hours they can code a game for billions of "guys who have a phone" and make shit loads of money by selling a silly monkey who can say "Hi" instead of spending years and years of development time for a product that will be outdated at launch.
And believe me when i'm saying this: I really wish it wasn't so!

The thing is, in a properly made Sandbox you get your "quests" from playing the game, and get to pick what you want to do. It's not hard, and a lot more entertaining than reading some scripted NPC's quest text.

Modern games don't make you read quest text. They have voice-acted cut-scenes instead. Hell even WOW does this now.

I mean the ones that grinders and rush-to-the-top players skip but players that enjoy stories in MMOs don't.
Skipping NPC dialogue is not a new thing you know. It was also done by the same crowd for the same reason in the text-only days.

I'll admit that I'm sure some players like the voice acted cut-scenes better than just a wall of text. But the medium doesn't really matter in the context of my post. You stated in your next post that players like the story. Yes, I think story is important too. The difference is that in the text or voice acted way, the game is handing you the story. In a well made Sandbox, as I've suggested, the players are finding the story through their game play. Plus, that story, it can hold secrets for further discoveries. That's something you never see in those tag along "rides."

I think you misunderstood my post, that's exactly what I was implying, and I agree with you... and many players, used to streamlined theme parks, don't understand that.

Which is why games like ESO are 100+ gigs plus to download...Not all of us want that in our MMOs.....We just skip it like we did the text in the past.
There are a lot of videos out there, but this one has fairly high production quality and mentions some long term crafting goals (cap ships) alongside several cool battle scenes
