Like millions of others, my first was World of Warcraft. Stopped playing ages ago when the drama in my guilds became more dramatic than real life and everything just got too serious :-). In fact, this is the first year in ages I'm not playing any MMO. For the first time in a few decades I'm addicted to console gaming (PS5) on my comfortable couch because I didn't realize until this past November how much consoles had closed the gap with PC gaming. Absolutely loved Horizon Dawn and Forbidden West and now addicted to Ghost of Tsushima :-). Eventually I'll play Hogwarts.
My first MMO was AberMUD, and I haven't touched a MUD in forever. Second was Neverwinter Nights on AOL. That was fun but was really just a Gold Box game with multiplayer. I played many MMOs for a couple months in the late 90s and early 2000s, but I consider DDO my first true love of MMOs. It's janky but I still enjoy playing it several times a year, but nothing like I used to.
Runescape classic. Sadly, the official servers are offline, though there are some unofficial servers. I do feel nostalgia for those times (early 2000s), but I know playing it now won’t be the same. Still, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

No. Shadowbane closed, although I think there are emulators. I wouldn't go back to it though, other than a quick nostalgia fix. Games are of a time. You have to move on or you stagnate into the 'the only good games were in 1992. Everything after sucks'
My first mmo was EQ soon after it's Velious launch & I played it for years (too many). I play it occasionally now for maybe a month or two out of a year off & on. I'd continuously play it even today if the current EQ owner (Daybreak or Darkpaw or something like that) would make the Mercenaries sufficient enough to do group content. I don't wanna waste time waiting for a group & I don't wanna multi-box, but it'd be nice to have control of 3-5 npcs for my ideal group & go leveling & exploring.
My first (M)MO was Phantasy Star Online on the Sega Dreamcast through dial-up. Haven't played it ever since.
First real MMO was Ragnarok Online, which I've played for maybe a few days or weeks at max. and haven't played ever since.
First real MMO I've played a bit longer was Star Wars Galaxies, which I've revisited on SWG Emu didn't stick around for more than a few hours.
First real MMO that I've totally fell in love with was EQ2 which lasted a few months until WOW came around and changed everything.
I revisited EQ2 many times for its next expansions up until Rise of Kunark and then stopped until the first TLEs (time locked expansion) servers came around which tried to recreate the classic feeling but unfortunately failed in doing so.
My first was Underlight and no it is too creaky now if it still runs. But Splattr reminded my that I played MUDs way before that, if you are going to count MUDs as MMOs then it would be AmberMush. I did play some "Muds" before that, but I was finding my feet so only stayed long enough to work out how this new extraordinary genre of games could be played before finding a home in AmberMush.
They were extraordinary, it as like nothing you had ever experienced before, not BBC B gaming, not table top roleplaying, it had that and so much more. This was most players first taste of what a multiplayer game could be like after "hotseat" it was a revolution.
It was Guild Wars 1. Perhaps I could, to finish my business there. Otherwise, I don't like to stay in one place too long. No matter how fun I might find a game, I really don't like to stay long. No matter how much I might want to.
It's complicated. But I might really fire up GW 1, finish my business as it were.
First "real" MMO was Warhammer Online and that's dead as a doornail. Also, finished almost everything I wanted to do over on RoR. Only the Choppa experience is left. That reminds me ...
First mmo was Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, followed by UO then EQ and the only one i've gone back to at all was EQ but could'nt stick with it. Now I pretty much play single player games except when friends drag me back to raid in WoW or FF.
Asheron's Call and yes. I play on a few of the EMU servers. It isn't quite the same though, while there are a ton of people playing, it friends/relationships and stuff are just not the same.

No for me, Lineage 1 was my first and NCSoft closed the official US servers long ago.
I'm not a fan of freeshards so not really an option for me.
My first MMRPG was Lineage 1 too. I don't speak or read Korean and, after investigating freeshards came to the same conclusion.
Planeshift, not my first, but a very early MMRPG I played is still running. I haven't played in years. It's truly community developed and driven and honestly "free to play". They're moving from their old engine to Unreal 5.1, which apparently is nearly complete.

yep me too, I probably would too, still the best game ive played

It was either that or EVE Online since I bought them both on the same day.
