Diablo 4 has been in development since 2014. Discussions to make Diablo Immortal were in 2016 -2017. Not to belabor who or what set what precedent.
Thank you for that. The misrepresentation was driving me crazy. The entire shift in theme with D4 is due to all the feedback from the thoughtfully critical crew that D3 visauls are too vibrant with cartoonish stylized art. D:I had nothing to do with that. D4's direction had been set long before a mobile cash grab plopper dropped from their pants.
It went through iterations, and the story wasn't even set for the game by the 2019 debut. We can at least consider that the general style was laid down by the 2019 debut, but that's still after 2017 by a couple years.
Not a massive surprise in timing to Vicarious Visions/Blizz Albany being brought in to sprint Resurrected and then join the team on finishing 4 either.
I dunno where or what you guys are arguing about anymore. But my Baby Barb just hit 78 and easilly face tanked the butcher in the middle of a nightmare dungeon during a boss fight with 4 simultaeous mini-bosses (with periodic lightning I had to hide from and random volcanic eruptions).
I'm having a blast. Still havent found my Chestpiece although I have gotten the alternate unique 4 times now...

Grats! My Chain Lightning Sorc (no one has a chain lightning end game build so I'm rolling my own as I go along ) is 77.9 so if I play him tonight he'll definitely hit 78 or 79. On that character, I'm like 17-0 against the Butcher wherever I meet him.
Also having a blast but spreading the love: I also have a 56 Blood Necro, a 53 Minion Necro, and an Arc Lash 50 sorc that needs a lot of work to be even T3 capable - IDK about her.
Lately, I started yet another sorc, Ice Shard + Blizzard this time and have been playing her for the past couple of days.
On my main... that new +80% XP for Nightmare dungeons sure is nice for leveling in the mid to high 70s now isn't it?

Would you say that D4 is better in the depth(=few super high optimized characters) or in the width(=altoholic wet dream) aspect? Why?

I think currently it's good both ways although builds that are much better than other builds do exist.
I really get a kick about my full minion Necro (12 minions counting golem) is thriving and kicking ass in early T3 content against anything. They are supposed to be dogshit but one particular streamer named Luxthos inspired me to give it another shot and II'm finding it very competitive so + 1 to altoholic me there.

Grim Dawn (which I have also played a ton) has had many years to cook and they have gone through many buff/nerf cycles. It is also a very easy game compared to D4.
The many classes and class combos create a humongous number of possibilities and Diablo will never do it to that extent.
But Grim Dawn is also not meta-free and all class combos and skill choices are not equal. Some builds are just plain far superior to others and some suck. That exists in all ARPGs... all RPGs really.

Let me rephrase that. Is it a smarter thing to:

Which gives more satisfaction in your opinion? Weigh what the game offers, not your preferences. Thanks.

Yes that’s why I started running them. I honestly think they may have tweaked the shard drops in Helltides a bit too much. I’m done with a mystery chest in 6-7 minutes…
Barb is now higher than both my Druid (60) and Necro main (75) so I guess he’s now my main. He’s pretty much unkillable. I started with a thorn build from Mattjestic but I’m off the reservation now and loving it. Fun in a group too. He makes everything on screen vulnerable and then the others blow them up. Plus when they die I get to rez the group.

Yeah, ground dots are definitely a problem. packs of regular elites and bosses are no issue at all with minions dying but they seem to take disproportionate amounts of damage from poison and rot and of course, their damage mitigation AI is non-existent. If there is "stupid" to stand in they will always be there.

It's an interesting adjacent design to my build that utilizes shadowblight instead. I generate vulnerability out of the iron golem, along with it's use for CC as an alternative to the bone golem's taunt alongside the cold mages. Being able to focus on the shadow damage myself to additionally slow enemies and debuff them for my pets through stacking decompose, blight, and shadowblight on top of the iron golem's vulnerability is pretty effective.

Yup. I think the problem is that the puddles do not do massive damage instantly but rather fast ticks. So the talent to limit minion damage to 30 percent works great on bosses but is useless when they stand in a puddle.
Still, I miss how fast he can clean whole dungeons or boss fights. Some can be painful on the barb.

Mindless jab aside;
The question presented is one of preference, neither choice is smarter when the context is what one would have fun doing.
Does one want to explore the variety of the classes and their mechanics, or hone in on one class to perfect a specific build?
Have to answer that question to really consider which direction would be the better choice for the individual.
It's not necessarily a bad idea to "split the difference" either and explore several classes to see what style is preferred before drilling down. Just matters the type of play and content one prefers, and how that might affect their potential sense of burnout if they spend to long on something that doesn't gel well with their interest.
Yes, but games often don't really cater to both crowds, do they? It's often an XOR. And that's what I was after. What the game offers. If you prefer something, you can make it (eventually) work, no matter how arcane or esoteric. Or where for that matter. But sometimes a tool is more aligned for a task x than it is for task y. You know?

Fair reasoning there.
I'm not sure I'd consider them as opposing concepts as much as just that element of a focus on one as a core design at the cost of other elements.
D:4 is still being learned by most players. Just looking at the prior few posts in this thread you can see how there's an admission by supposedly informed players that certain builds had been written off until revisited by others in the community. My own focus on a minion necro was considered completely nerfed by a good amount of people (or "dogshit" by some) until they started catching on to some of the neglected options that make it actually work reasonably well. With Blizz tracking and planning rebalances, it's a bit of a question mark how some of that might improve too.
While I wouldn't say the variance is massive in available play styles for each class, they do still offer multiple distinct play styles that have the proper skills and item bonuses to support them as end game viable, as far as the current end game exists.
As it applies to the question of grinding through to cap a small amount of characters versus playing a variety of them with differing builds to mid-level, I think the qualifier to that still remains if you prefer to focus on specific builds to completion or just like exploring the types of options available. As the level cap is not a solid measure of your character being optimally geared which is a decent chunk of progression on it's own.
The game is forgiving in making alts and skipping some early progression hurdles to get into doing more builds, so if you have the time it makes Alts pretty approachable after doing a bit of prep-grind on your first character to unlock some stuff.
If it's your "I want to play this game in specific" thing, then you'd be perfectly safe rolling a few characters and hammering through the levels to then tool with your build and gearing.
Not sure you'd really need to roll a bunch of characters to explore the different class builds, unless you want a couple characters of the same class with distinct builds so you don't have to spend the time and gold on respeccing. Like I wouldn't mind rolling a second necro for playing a no-pet build.
Does a know how grouping affects monster potency? I know they scale to each person’s level but they also get harder. When someone joins my group the monster levels do not change for me but they hit harder and have more HP. I haven’t been able to find anything that outlines how much they change.

I dunno man. I constantly can just sleepwalk through nightmare dungeons rearely ever even needing a healing postion but when a buddy joins all hell breaks loose.

Could be confirmation bias from D3, but it sure felt that way to me. On the other hand, difficult content was more manageable because we could share aggro, damage conditions, and ultimate effects. For me, this is one of those games that is more interesting coop, like Borderlands 2; great game, better with a buddy even if it's harder.
It's just a mediocre ARPG with the Diablo name on it with some interesting Diablo lore and good graphics. Leveled all my alts doing the 1 hour leveling method even though my main is still level 30. Should have gone the D3.5 route would have been much better. It's probably interesting enough for anyone into Diablo lore to play it anyways.

Yes, I would've actually preferred Diablo 3.5.
(Reaper of Souls is quite literally Diablo 3.5, and it is indeed very good.)
3's combat and traversal have a nice quick pace that few other ARPGs do, and it's one of the few ARPGs that isn't boring as sin for the early-to-mid levels.
IDK, I like it so far, but I don’t truly love it. Maybe because I was such a fan of D1 and didn’t think much of D2 or D3. Perhaps I have it in my head that in 2023 for $60 I should be playing a more immersive, lip-sync’d, and better-scripted game in first or third-person. Worked out great for the Fallout series, right? Sometimes I feel a little cheated; like I paid prime $$$ for a mobile game with a large map.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re likely keeping the gameplay accessible and familiar to as many fans as possible while not letting it look too dated, but…it just feels like it should move on into more modern tech. I’m not a Diablo purist, so perhaps I’m not even the right audience. I’m sure it’s blasphemous even to have these thoughts, but they’re always the first thing on my mind when I’m locked into staring down on my character and can’t “look around”…some 20 years later or more.
Or I’m jaded and I’m taking it out on D4. Forgive me.

I'm having a blast. Still havent found my Chestpiece although I have gotten the alternate unique 4 times now...

I really get a kick about my full minion Necro (12 minions counting golem) is thriving and kicking ass in early T3 content against anything. They are supposed to be dogshit but one particular streamer named Luxthos inspired me to give it another shot and II'm finding it very competitive so + 1 to altoholic me there.

The many classes and class combos create a humongous number of possibilities and Diablo will never do it to that extent.
But Grim Dawn is also not meta-free and all class combos and skill choices are not equal. Some builds are just plain far superior to others and some suck. That exists in all ARPGs... all RPGs really.

or
> Create a bunch of alts, be it from 1 or from 50
?
Which gives more satisfaction in your opinion? Weigh what the game offers, not your preferences. Thanks.
I've already told you about what I'm doing and what I enjoy. Nothing to add.

Still, I miss how fast he can clean whole dungeons or boss fights. Some can be painful on the barb.
