From the ashes of the canned MMO Project Titan, Blizzard's PvP hero shooter Overwatch has captivated audiences since its initial launch. However, the biggest what if that surrounds the game is whether it could have worked as an MMO.

I'm all for more sci-fi games. Could Overwatch make it as an MMO? I mean that's a big "what if" if I've ever heard one. Problem is they killed the project for a reason. What was that reason?

One thing you failed to mention was the timing of Destiny 2 which was still under the Activision banner when Project Titan was still under development. It wouldn't surprise me if the Activision executives looked at both and realized they would appeal to the exact same audience and decided to kill Titan because they didn't want to compete with themselves. Probably a smart move if so.

If that's the case then there may be something worth resurrecting to turn Overwatch into an MMO. However if the reason it got cancelled was it was a steaming pile of crap then maybe not.

I'm not so sure anything new can succeed as a MMO anymore. The whole genre has been kneecapped by having to somehow compete with World of Warcraft and its near 20 years of paid-for subscription content. It's not a fair or viable situation for any developer to be in.

That would take the studio to be interested in the idea, doubt that will happen.

Kind of hard to tell how Project Titan was going before they canned it, it might have been a boring mess and Blizz just took the best parts and made a smaller, less expensive, but easier to monetize game out of Overwatch.

I know being an MMO fan I think about :blank: but a MMO often, but really I don't think most games actually need to be an MMO, or even if they do, just how massive does the multiplayer need to be to create good gameplay?

    I  think you're right.

Any game launching as a traditional mmorpg is  going to be compared to what  has gone  before it.

the only way I see an  mmorpg doing well is if A - it's done  very well, B - it targets a very specific audience and isn't part of the regular "quest hub theme park" type of game, C - They innovate in such a way as to create a huge  excitement and buzz for the game AND they can  continually deliver on quality.

And D) Is for a major established IP.

Seems fairly non-optional now. Final Fantasy and ESO have been the only major successful western MMOs since Guild Wars 2, and both were for mega IP.

I would say it depends on the scope of the game.

If it's a "small game" then no, a major IP is not needed. Heck, people are so hungry for a mmorpg they just show up to play whatever is  launched.

However, a game that has a huge budget and that expects to recoup that budget as well as being able to support significant operating cost? Yes, that would have to be a known and popular IP.

Looks like it's not even succeeding as an FPS.

If they can't deliver PvE content; an MMO will never work. Modern day Blizzard is trash.

I would love to see Lemmings MMORPG. I'd probably play either Builder or Blocker class depending how they perform in PvP. I hope they'll nerf Diggers and Bombers right off the bat. They will be OP anyway.

You see those top rated games on your list like those top three. That's all we all play now.

I'm 100% the entire genre base has been burnt harder than a zoomer trying to grill a cheese sandwhich with a blow tourch.

As if WoW is so alien that nobody can every make anything better?

Sorry as good as original WoW was, its not so amazing it cannot ever be replicated.  The big problem is dev teams lack of ideas and their very poor understanding of what made WoW popular in the first place.  All WoW did was take some popular features and polish them up nice and shiny and added some good QoL for average users.  Not exactly revolutionary.

Unfortunately for this genre, Dev teams cannot figure out what is liked and what is not liked.  So we get dumb ideas like the new games coming out that are adding stuff like AUTO offline combat, with most of the innovation coming from monetization models.

Even in the Betas you can tell which mechanics are going to turn off the majority of players.  The dev teams keep putting out this trash and its easily appartent to all but the most rabid fanboys.

Even WoW retail has significantly lowered the bar.

All a game has to do is be better than WoW vanilla and it will explode in popularity.  Dev teams have the luxury of hindsight, unfortunately they lack the common sense to make this happen.
