Thanks all for the input. Maybe I just need to change my mindset. However as yall have said taste is what it is. I really hope eventually devs will find a medium ground.
You don't need to change anything. Part of my own dislike of the isometric perspective in MMOs is just habit over 2 decades of playing games with the field of view and perspective that is the established norm for their particular genre.

I expect shooters to be first person as most of them have always been.
I expect Diablo-like ARPGs to be isometric as they have always been.
I expect party-based, pause and go, CRPGs to also be Isometric as was the case with Baldur's Gate and most that came after.
I expect MMORPGs to be 3rd person with an over the shoulder camera view with the distance of the PoV adjustable because that's how most of them have always been

I also don't feel a need to justify my preference, conventional and based mostly on just my own expectations though it might be. I just don't like ARPG and CRPG display nor first person for my MMORPGs... period.

Isometric has better combat and also why not?  does every MMO have to fit your over the shoulder preference?

most of my dislike of the overhead view is not the view itself but rather the lack of controller support that usually accompanies it in favor of the click to move here  type gameplay which I don't like much.

while i like the 3d view best im very picky on controls and gameplay. If you have a game with great controls and gameplay the view is secondary to me.

    Hey all,
So it seems to me a new trend is top down mmos. Having come from Ultima times this feels like a step backwards. You have fully immersive games these days which allow any camera you wish really. Why do these new games feel cheap to me when it's limited like this? Going from uo to eq1 Wlwas like a omg moment. This seems to just rob of the experience.  Also seems cheaper where textures and models can be well done faster and quicker. Not to mention pathing without a z axis.

Call me odd? Am I the only one who does not like this? I can't really get myself to play these and it's a no go for me. How do the rest of you feel?

They feel cheap to you because they do, essentially. It is a matter of personal perspective and taste and you and many others prefer otherwise.

I'm personally happy with anything other than first person which I will generally not use unless it is the only option for something I want to play.

I do have some particular issues. Some games both old and new have fonts I can't change to a comfortably readable size. There are some older games that induce eyestrain to the point I can't comfortably play them, UO most notably. These factors are far more determining of what I will and won't play than top down vs. third person and such.

There's nothing wrong with saying, I like this class of games and not that one.  There's no rule that every gamer must like first-person shooters and MMORPGs and puzzle games and platformers and idle games and city builders and sports games and 4X games and turn-based RPGs and visual novels and everything else.  If there's a class of games that a lot of other gamers like and you don't, then perhaps you shouldn't call it broken or inferior or some such, but there's nothing wrong with just not liking it and preferring something else.

Quizzical is 100% right here, with just one caveat: if I don't like it, it's objectively trash and anyone involved with the product in any way, shape, form, or context should be utterly ashamed of themselves. ;)

I like Iso for games where it makes sense, For RTS games, like Dawn of War, where it is a wargame, so, playing that field view is solid way to work the system.

However, when it comes to adventure games, like for example, Diablo, I just don't like the feel of it, it's not a matter of quality, it is purely a matter of, I don't like it.

    Never have.. never will.

EQ set the stage for feeling like my character was in a 3rd world, and when it comes to MMO, I just can't get into a game that does not give me that feeling of being IN the world.

Actually come to think of it the way I play these days is so far from my character it looks like a top down. I scroll it all the way back so I can see stuff all round me and my character looks tiny on the screen. I know it is not the same thing so don't get your knickers in a twist about my comparison it is just that it looks like it is all.

I don't mind this type of top down look or even isometric even with the 2d graphics, I just check the gameplay more than the look.

I must say though I used to play Everquest with the camera on the left shoulder but I can no longer play like that, it looks claustrophobic and frightening not knowing what is behind you so I went the 3rd person view when I revisited EQ but Everquest probably because it is an old game has a wonky view that is a little off and no adjustment gets it to my liking.

Oh by the way... Isometric is the way to go for MOBILE MMORPGs though.

I've played several mobile MMORPGs in "real 3D" and it always feels clunky and not appropriate. Albion and several other action RPGs on mobile play just fine because they are isometric and with optional "point and click" movement.

To play a true 3D game on a tablet, there's no better way than to emulate a PC... for instance with Moonlight streaming the game from your PC, a keyboard and a mouse connected to your tablet. I've been playing WoW like that from my hotel when I was traveling for my work.

Do WASD ARPG's/top down MMOs have controller support? I am only familiar with the click-to-move scheme in top down games (wasd hurts my hands in such games due to the frequent direction changes) so I don't know, plus I am not a controller user. If that's the case then it is just a matter of the game supporting both control schemes.
I find its quite hit or miss but now that consoles are a giant source of revenue for pc games there seems to be alot more controller support.

there is a downside that the games are made for controller support which some people would find limiting i guess.

I like both Third and Fist person. First person makes you feel like you have a helmet on you head. You don’t have your 220 degrees. Third person you are more aware of your surroundings.

I’ve enjoyed First person more with my 5120x1440 monitor, good surround sound helps with situational awareness. Which is my usual pet peeve with First person.

I've always wondered why many games opt for the isometric perspective. This blog post shed some light on the benefits, such as creating a unique visual style and facilitating level design. I never realized how much depth an isometric view could add to the gaming experience. It's fascinating to learn about the technical considerations that go into game development.
