By the way, if ANYONE believes that this is really the end of them selling access to the "testing" of their game, I have a bridge to sell you. IMHO this is about creating more FOMO and then magically they will have "Heard the requests of the players" and reopen orders.
I thought this exact same thing. I wish we could get odds on this somewhere.
I think it has more to do with constraints on their systems/servers. Offering people access to Alpha and early Beta means they need the server power to support the number of players they are selling this too. I think they are at the point where the number of people already sold too and the cost effectiveness of having them in Alpha, is not helpful and will costs too much if they just leave it open. I have another reason I think this is happening but I will just keep that to myself.
IMHO it's happening in order to create some sense of FOMO. There are people who will literally spend hundreds of dollars to get in because they believe that this will be their last chance and if they do not jump now they will be locked out for years until release.
Gotta buy that XangoJuice. Get it fast!
I didnt say this was not part of it, I just think its more about them not wanting to pay more then they need to for server space. I also think they are close to the line of it costing them too much for servers. Alpha 2 is also when allot of pledgers get access to the game. I think IS wants to shut that door for that before they announce Alpha 2 sometime in the near future and then get a huge spike of people rush buying to be able to play Alpha 2.
EDIT: This also means IS is lying about this not being connected to Alpha 2 launch.
One thing I would bet my house on is that Stephen would not "shut that door" for customers to buy in order to avoid a rush. He is letting the FOMO actually try to DRIVE a rush as people panic that if they do not plunk down thair $150, $250, whatever... they are going to "miss out". I mean, he's a XangoJuice guy...
I agree but only up to a line and no further. Having servers that can hold large population is cool when people are paying $15-18 a month. Letting them in for free for testing, thats just a bill you dont want to eat during production. 100% for sure, they have a line they dont want to pass. Steven is juggling the number of people paying for access for maximum profit and the balance of not getting that number to a level that costs him more then he is making. I think thats why they have been slow on pulling the trigger on calling its Alpha 2. They have not met the sales quota they want. They also dont want to yell, Alpha 2 starts in 4 months and have 500% increase in sales so they can play Alpha 2, as that would not be sustainable for IS.
By the way, if ANYONE believes that this is really the end of them selling access to the "testing" of their game, I have a bridge to sell you. IMHO this is about creating more FOMO and then magically they will have "Heard the requests of the players" and reopen orders.

My suspicion is that a large portion of revenue comes from the cash shop. And the more people that "buy in" to the game, the wider the customer base to sell those "limited time" items to. Or has the cash shop closed?

Or start offering some terrific new beta packages with "early access" to the later stages of Alpha 2, but only if you "act now" of course.

5. If I do not get a Pre-Order Pack, does that mean I will not be able to join Alpha Two, Beta One, or Beta Two in the future?
As we complete more internal and external testing, we may decide to expand the amount of Alpha Two, Beta One, and Beta Two testers needed. At that time, we may provide more ways for folks to attain access, and we will provide further information regarding that via our communication channels.
Of course they'll reopen sales a month or 2 before A2 starts once they've done spot testing with the current population to make sure the servers can handle it, why wouldn't they?

My understanding is that its just the pre-order packs is going away. Its the main way to buy into getting access to Alpha stages to play and also Beta. The cosmetics they love selling are not going anywhere as far as I understand.
Okay, 'fess up... who here has purchased packs to AoC?
Im an OG backer to the game. I pledges at the minimum level to get Beta. I bought my wife and I a pledge of just $80 Canadian. Its one of 2 games I have backed and will never back a game again. Pantheon has a pledge for me and my wife at $50 USD each

As for the actual words, note he said they MAY provide more ways for people to attain access. It's simply to create FOMO. You and I both know that. Don't we?

Sure but its also their business and must be managed. If their needs in the future for more Alpha testers because people who bought in are not engaging. They would most likely start selling Pre-Order packs again, maybe give some away to active community members to get them in the door sooner. My guess is they want to sell every testing spot to anyone willing to test and pay. I agree FOMO is part of it, taking away something does that effect but can you admit thats also governed by running his business? Selling seats they cant afford to provide would be a really dumb move.
I am 100% sure this announcement to to get people to (FOMO) buy the seats they want filled. Once that happens we will see two things. The Pre-Order packs will go away till they need them again and shortly after, maybe a few weeks, many a couple of months. IS will announce Alpha 2. Thats the order of things. I could be wrong but its more then just FOMO.

Or you could say, an active member of the community that likes to talk about games?
Given how extremely negative I was during the kickstarter basically expecting snake oil sale they have done far more than I expected, actively working on building a game with fairly competent developers.
The problem is the reality that developing mmorpg that can possibly live up to the potential requires far more money than anyone outside star citizen are getting.
Just have to sit on the sideline waiting for bunch more years.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.

Best thing anyone can do. Judge a company by the work. Everything we have seen looks great but we still have not seen the node system in play. Public events that nodes are to spit out by player interaction. We have not seen all of the main classes and not a single sub class works on the main class. They say thats all in the works but nothing to show.
I always have to doubt the stated opinions of a streamer who is literally being paid by the company they are covering. Especially ones that make more money by having you click their referral link.
Not saying that anything he stated was a lie, but I just can't take anything at face value in those circumstances.

Sure I can see that. I do find Lazy Peon is very reserved in how he speaks about games. Not over hyping but seems to just say the facts. I have seen him also speak negatively about parts of games he has been paid to review.

Yeah I don't usually watch streamers. I just know him from his CoE coverage where he DEFINITELY was not paid. But I just wonder if the roles were swapped and CoE paid him while AoC didn't how his videos would have looked.
Guess we will never know.
