It breaks inmersion to me. I don't see why my character should be listening to music when there's nobody playing music around.
I'm on the fence. Being a composer one would "think" I'd like it but it really depends.
If I'm interested in more of a world experience I very well could turn it off. If I'm looking at the gaming session as an interactive bit if entertainment I'll leave it on.
If they use cheap sounds and it's irritating I'll also turn it off. Recently, I replaced the music in Daggerfall as it's an old game and the music sounds are just horrible to my ears.

I almost always am grouped on Discord so the first think I ever do in game is lower overall volume to about 50% and then beyond that I set music to about 20%. I like to hear it but only as background.
Damnit the bot got me...

Music that designed for the game, if done right only intensifies the feels. Even badly done is still better then listening to my own audio track. Only time I stop listening to the games audio track is when I have been playing it for years.
Like WoW, ESO, DAoC, EQ1, I knew every sound effect and song. I could turn it off and still hear it in my head, matter of fact, it still lives there and when I hear them, it brings back warm feelings.

I agree. For me, I want the music at the key points of change that my character should be obviously aware of. I want the sounds of the world at most times, though. I like the idea of those sounds informing me of things around me that I may not be able to see. What wildlife is around, the sound of a footstep or twig breaking, waterfalls and rivers, etc.
I observed my actual behavior in gameplay and found out that actually I keep the music usually on.
For the simple practical reason that this way I know when a battle starts.
And I really hate this bug in BG1EE that makes the battle music keep playing sometimes, despite the fact there isnt any fighting going on anymore. Save + Stop + Restart and its immediately gone. But it just keeps going if you keep playing.
I'll always remember DAOC and EQ2 music. I can hear it in my sleep. If I could buy the music to those 2 soundtracks I would. DAOC had some of the best nature music. It was extremely soothing. I loved their music.

So basically it has to be as good as the music you create...got it.

If it isn't a great soundtrack, I may listen to youtube or something though.
