It hasn't got the best reviews from what I have read. IGN, Gamespot and PC Gamer all gave it a 7/10 or 75/100 for PC Gamer..It will be a discount buy for me, next year sometime
Ah yes IGN, Gamespot and PC Gamer the holy trinity of quality reviews...
Those reviews count, as does any other. I am always more interested in the reviews that give a score decidedly below average than ones that give out 100. Those low score reviews will tell you what you need to know and help you avoid pet hates. Having looked over the low reviews I find nothing that will be a problem for me or won't be sorted out by the time I buy the game. But I would recommend anyone buying to look at them, maybe some of the issues raised would be a show stopper for you.
I get where you're coming from and I do it the same way when looking at the classic score reviews but that is exactly the reason why nowadays I prefer non score reviews in video format that talk about everything in detail while giving you audiovisual examples. This way I get a much better 'feel' for the game and guys like ACG and Mort for example are doing this in an almost perfect way.
How does it compare to No Man's Sky? What reason would I have to leave No Man's Sky for this? Genuine question, I try not to follow any games in develoment and usually tune in shortly before release..
Starfield is more traditional RPG where the devs have hand-placed NPCs, created dialogue for them, and made a lot of quests and stories you can follow while you adventure around. It's closer to Skyrim or Fallout than it's to No Man's Sky.
It's so easy to get sidetracked with innocent-seeming missions (eg. take a teramorph sample to a scientist on Mars) that lead you down a rabbit hole of chained missions for hours... and that's just a Vanguard side-quest.
I'm also finding the RPG character development learning curve, steep. There are so many options to train develop stealth, hacking, persuasion, different weapon specialties, ship upgrades, exploration... I hope there's a respec option because I'm just bumbling along and changing my mind about build-focus hourly
Also not a single bug of any sort yet.

Looks like Microsoft is neutering Bethesda regardless of claims to the contrary. I haven't seen anything yet while playing worthy of a "M for Mature" rating. You can't even strip armor off bodies anymore or even pick them up and carry/fling them, they're simply stock containers.
I was at a complete loss as well, as to why this game has a PEGI 18 rating. Then I looked at the Steam page and it only mentions Bad language and Violence for the 18 rating.
Honestly.... the combat is so muted in this game, more on par with FPS games like Overwatch, which have a PEGI 12 rating. So unless Bad language is enough these days to force a PEGI 18 rating lol.
The game has no romance nor any nudity... so it can't be that either.
I just got a couple of hours in the game last night and it's pretty obvious that the engine is an iteration of the Fallout/Skyrim engine. Stealth mechanic works exactly the same. Every time you enter/exit a building you get a little loading screen. Don't get me wrong it looks fantastic, and is quite playable on my aging 2080ti. However, I don't expect you're going to see entire explorable planets. Rather the planet will have a limited set of landing zones, each of which will load a map. You're not going to be able to seamlessly walk the entire surface of the planet like in NMS or SC. The technology just isn't that level.
However hand placed content can easily be much better than vast swaths of procedurally generated nothing.

I think this is why they should have ditched their Creation engine for this. It has only been used so far, for landbased games (elder scrolls, fallout, osv).
So the whole Space part they had to build in from scratch and hence why it's such an immersion breaking / disappointing experience! They grossly oversold many parts of the game.
I have just watched the 100hour review on Youtube and it's what I feared (again Creation engine limitations), that 95% of the game seems to be a planetary walking simulator! Barely any content in Space other than the occasional Pirate dogfights and boarding actions.
There seems to be no flight exploration whatsoever or at least no point in doing so, with pretty much everything being instant fast travel with loading screens, between planets, systems, everything really.
So then comes the most disappointing point of all! Why wasting all these dev resources on having so many different ships, customizations, unlocks, etc.... when you hardly get to use the ship, fly with it, when there is barely any point in doing so? Vast majority of content is on Planets and the game has no planetary flight either!
I seriously hope they are hard at work in addressing this via future content updates/DLC/expansion....whatever..... to add actual meaningful Space content to this game, add seamless planet/space flight transition, add planetary flight, etc. You know.... make it more of a Space game in what this game was supposed to be!
Instead, what we have now so far is 95% futuristic Fallout with a 5% space addition.

Clearly your last sentence proves you aren't really playing the game.
A Bethesda title that isn't a bug ridden mess at launch just isn't possible, ("everyone" said so) so you are just making stuff up to try and be one of the "in" crowd.

According to Howard, space and a planet's surface are two separate "realities."
"People have asked, 'Can you fly the ship straight down to the planet?' No," the Bethesda boss told IGN in an interview. "We decided early in the project that the on-surface is one reality, and then when you're in space, it's another reality."
Take it for what you will. That people saying this is the least buggy Bethesda game.... yeah right lol.
I am actually shocked by the amount of recycling/copying and pasting this game seems to have and that you already encounter this the first 10 hours into the game. (check around the 18-19 min mark of the video)
Shouldn't come as a surprise that most reviewers don't mention this at all in their glory reviews. Just paid/sponsored Bethesda shills that barely played the game for more than a couple hours. You can bet most of them barely played 6 hours at most, before writing their review.
You see this time and again with many games lately and studios perfectly playing into this, to make sure the first 6 hours is super polished to get favorable reviews, before it all falls apart beyond that mark. But that doesn't matter, since the vast majority of reviewers don't play that long. Even Cohh is falling victim to this with his 6 hour impression videos and why I cannot take him serious anymore. Most of these first hours are sponsored too.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a perfect example of this as well.

My bad and I swallow my mistake (will remove it from that post). Must have misread that part/or they walked back on it in later interviews when they ran into technical issues. It's Tod Howard after all. He has walked back on many promises lately and trying to tone down on hype he created himself!
So all the rest of the critique still remains true. See my last post with Luke Stephens review in how much has been oversold / misleading marketing / outright lies.
Fact still remains that Tod Howard grossly oversold many parts of the game, lied and used a lot of misleading marketing. He just doesn't learn from his past mistakes and why his company has tanked in reputation the last years!
So I will not be surprised the game will crash and burn coming Wednesday in the player reviews.

The thing that makes or breaks Bethesda games is the moding
Let's be honest, the core game of any Bethesda title is always bad, I don't think I have finished a main quest line in a single game. And if we were judging these games solely on the core gameplay, they are all 3/10 games.
The sole reason I play any of these games is to goof around with mods, a sort of chaos simulator. You know, a spell that spawns so many mudcrabs my game crashes. Same appeal of GTA like games.
So we will need a follow up, "How is the moding scene?"

Steam forums are like the playground of an elementary school yard. Bunch of children fighting over who's daddy can beat up the others. Or who's lying. Rarely get any good info from them, and are just a waste of time.
Closest thing you, Me, or anyone, will get to a good feel of a game is to look at different people playing the game on places like YouTube. Not the reviewers, but actual playthroughs.
Those 30 minute to an hour playthroughs will give you the truest feel of how the game plays and if it will interest you to try it out for yourself.
The times I have trusted reviews, both good and bad, and gotten burned, far, far, outweigh the times I have watched playthroughs, and bought the game and not been satisfied with the games. Lot of truth in seeing is believing. Get a much better look at games that way rather than the cherry picked vids of reviewers.
Usually people are just too impatient to wait a few days after a game releases before buying.
Normally I would agree, since the vast majority of reviewers and youtubers are just sponsored shills these days.
Steam forums. Yes...always many trolls there, but you cannot ignore the cluster F-up the PC port seems to be, where ton of people seem to be crashing, unable to run the game at all, save game not working, etc, etc. Overall Player review score on Steam for each game has always been spot-on too so far in my opinion.
You also simply can't unsee Luke Stephens video and ignore the facts about the state of this game and how it fails to deliver on so many of it's promises.
Luke Stephens just delivers the cold hard truth without any useless sponsored drivel and excuses.
I also watched the first several videos of Cohh's playthrough and I just couldn't get excited. The game just feels really bland, overly bright/oversaturated and uninspiring to me. I had set my expectations low, since it's Bethesda, but clearly I had not set my expectations low enough lol.
I can handle the bugs/glitches with Bethesda games... we pretty much gotten used to it and it's par de course with their games..... no way around it. Again, most likely never-ending issues/limitations with their Creation engine.
But what I cannot accept is the sheer amount of content recycling / outright copy&pasting this game seems to have. That is just downright lazy and unacceptable. What is also disappointing is that if you like to get into Base building, that it requires insane amounts of grinding and endless walking on boring dead/repetitive planets. Since of course this game doesn't have vehicles nor planetary flight. Just typical lazy content padding, by turning everything into a boring slow grind.
Its the same with all the ship customization. Just all feels really pointless and disapointing, when you have this great customization of your ship, but there really isn't any reason or point to it. Since 95% of the game is outside your ship. Then it just becomes a bit of useless gimmick.
Again, this is just a classic example of sheer ambition (feature bloat) taking over common sense.
They clearly took on way more than they could chew, had to walk back on many promises and end up with a game where a lot has been done half assed, rushed, unfinished and simply many steps back compared to their previous games.
PS. I want to make clear I am not some Bethesda hater. I have played all of their games over the years and enjoyed the vast majority of them. Both Skyrim and ESO alone I played for 100's of hours each.
There's no such thing as "pan out." Panning is when the camera moves from side to side or up and down. You zoom in or zoom out to see things closer up or from a greater distance.
They say the side quests are really interesting, even more so than the main story. I will definitely play it sometime, though I do prefer a fantasy setting.
I wonder what would have been if they ran with the idea of Elder Scrolls 40k instead...

This has been the best game launch for me since Hogwarts Legacy, which was a experience.
Starfield is Xbox Play Anywhere, so if it is purchased through the Windows Store (Xbox Store), then it can be played on both console and PC. The same is true for the Premium upgrade if you have GamePass Ultimate. Buy the upgrade ($30) and it applies to both PC and console, including getting access right now.
Starfield plays and feels nothing like NMS. I started my NMS expedition last night too, because it's still a very relaxing chill way to wind down a night.

I know you are referring to me and I can assure you, with every fiber of my body. I do not hate gaming! My wife can attest to this LOL!
One is allowed to be disappointed with yet another OVERHYPED game.
Tod Howard is just his own worst enemy, doesn't learn from his past mistakes with outrageous claims, promises and misleading marketing tactics and I think it's past time he passes on the torch to someone else. He should have done already years ago, after the whole FO76 debacle!
You cannot deny, when you look at Square Enix and the sheer quality they deliver with their games recently, how stuck in the past a studio as Bethesda is (same with Bioware) and how outdated their Game Engines are.
I finally got a PS5 before the summer and both Final Fantasy 7 remake part 1 and Final Fantasy 16 just blew me away! The production and sheer quality of these games is literally insane! The story, motion capture animations, sheer emotion, etc is out of this world. My wife got seriously annoyed with me spending way too many hours on these games LOL. So no! Again I do not hate gaming in the slightest.
When it comes to Starfield, my main two major disappointments are the sheer misleading/oversold gimmick of the game having 1000 planets. The endless hype banter from Tod Howard. /sigh Totally pointless when over 95% of these are boring procedurally generated lifeless/repetitive/dead rocks which serve no other purpose than to walk on endlessly and grind materials for building base components. The remaining 5% seem to be more personally crafted and unique, yet they seem to have run out of development time and a lot of content and assets are literally recycled / copy&pasted. See Luke Stephens video, it's honestly extremely disappointing.
Second, this game has really amazing ship customization. A feature I was looking forward to the most! Yet here too, it just turns out to be nothing but a pointless gimmick since 95% of the time is spend outside your ship on a planet! There is just not much reason to spend time on your ship other than your occasional pirate dog fight in space and/or dock an enemy ship to hijack it and claim it for yourself. So you have another new ship to customize, but then not spend actually any time on it. It's the same with Base building really, which seems to be a heavy grind for materials.
Then the game itself is overly bright and oversaturated. Graphics quality is all over the place. Has no HDR support anno 2023 believe it or not and the PC port seems to be a total disaster.
I lucky have an XBox Series X myself with GamePass, so I can try out Starfield for free coming Wednesday... but I just don't even feel like trying it right now. Maybe in the future when they have done some major patches, added content and addressed some of the issues.
There are so many other good games to play right now. I am still not finished with FF7 remake (71%) and FF16 (83%). Then the expansion for CP2077 launches soon in a couple weeks and Space Marine 2. Looking forward to those. I also enjoy my reroll time in FFXIV Online. Also very time consuming lol!

I wonder what would have been if they ran with the idea of Elder Scrolls 40k instead...

Kyleran on yours sincerely
'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
Gdemami absolutely not being an armchair developer
/sigh
Totally pointless when over 95% of these are boring procedurally generated lifeless/repetitive/dead rocks which serve no other purpose than to walk on endlessly and grind materials for building base components.
