Genderlocked classes are fine with me (if and only if) the game is grounded in lore (and I mean real lore not made up gaming lore).

Case in point: Dark Age of Camelot - Midgard classes pulled from Norse mythology. There is no record of a male Valkyrie so I am good with it.

And let's be real, many in these forums would complain if they did have make Valkyrie's too.

ROFL.....wut?!!?!? "real" lore vs "made up" lore.....

All lore is made up that's why it's called "lore" and not history.

What he's getting at is "this class is based on real history or mythology" vs. "we made up some ingame lore to justify our lazy/cost-cutting decision."

I think both are shitty, mind you.

"Real" lore is based on legends, mythology, history or the fictional conception of the author of the IP. "Duff" lore is for reasons like Aeander said or it is just made up to fit the latest dlc or dropped in from another game for marketing reasons. Of course not all duff lore is as bad as the next, for example I have seen crossovers where I hated the lore concept but it was meshed well and to a high standard.

They could solve it as some game did but for the life of me I cannot recall the name off. Make the male and female body the same then they won't have issues to having to spend resources on varying armour and weapon sizes. Then give hair and facial hair and other ways to differentiate them. The issue has always been the problem of fitting of gear on different types of bodies. Boobs also no need so no worries.

Male and female body differences are rather central to depicting gender. Breasts are rather integral to that differentiation so are needed.

I think part of the reason the devs said they went with gender locked classes was related to the resources they had in the beginning. Having only one character model cuts down on time needed to fix issues, like if an armor or cosmetic doesn't fit properly because the differences in the character models. I think there's like vague background origin stories for each class so they are kind of set characters (I think the wizard/mage character was a mentor to the witch character before they had a falling out because she used forbidden magic). Once you're decked out in full armor and zoomed out during combat, it's hard to tell what gender you're playing, anyway.

Also, comparing themselves to D4 and pointing out some of the things they have and D4 doesn't is a little cringe and makes them look desperate. Stop doing that, please. LE is a great game that should be able to stand on it's merits.

While the lore bit is true, there's nothing about a teacher/student relationship that would lock genders. It would be a flimsy excuse, but not one they're making. I'm sure it is easier to only create one set of armor models for one gender as opposed to two, but given how many units they sold it seems like they could afford to outsource the tedium of retrofitting everything to an additional gender per class. The engine exists, the assets exist, they could ramp up some entry level 3d modelers to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time.

The only reasonable reason they wouldn't do that is if they planned on updated all the models and animations down the road (not a bad idea, btw, because they current ones look like amateur hour level stuff) and had planned on doing it anyway. Short of that they're just lazy.

Also, I think the little D4 vs LE comparison is a bit of a cheap shot because it's not a this game vs that game thing since you can own both. I do. I'm not living under a bridge in a cardboard box because of it.

What could affect teacher/student relationships is cultural differences. We don't even need to examine history or mythology for examples of that. There are distinct cultural differences in the world today that can influence what people may or not do within them.

With that being so, there is no reason why such differences could not exist in a fantasy world where the range of cultural deviation could be even wider.

No excuse or justification need be provided for doing so. A developer can do so at their option if they feel it suited to the setting they want for their game.

Claiming you have the "most versatile and customizable class in any ARPG" when your classes are gender-locked, then directly comparing it to D4, is pretty bold. I get they're talking about the class/skills and not the character, but still.

As much as I generally hate gender locked games, the sheer number of distinct playstyle/build option with such a large number of classes makes this far more forgivable to me. Having spent some time with D4 I feel like the build/spec system in Last Epoch is more robust and has modifiers that legitimately change which and how skills are used, whereas in D4 I felt like most were minor tweaks.

I agree, was going to try this out and would still like to, but after purchasing on steam, I logged in and found the gender locked thing and hit the refund button.

I haven't played in quite a while. When I visited the Steam page I noticed it seems to have a cash shop and "in app purchases". Can anyone explain what that is an how it works? I wasn't planning on installing and playing again until the final release patch.

Not being facetious here you really need someone who is playing, but I noticed it was originally a mobile game so app purchases may just be for that. What did strike me looking at Steam was they were giving it very positive but the fact it was a mobile from 2011 and may be a bit outdated was questioned.

Last Epoch wasn't a mobile game that I know of. It isn't cross platform at all. If it were ever a mobile game, this is a complete reboot from the ground up.

For an indie "isometric" ARPG, the graphics are very pretty.

I have played early versions and there was no cash shop, which is why I'm asking. I could reinstall it, but hoped to get an answer without having to do so.

It was never a mobile game.

They've stated since kickstarter that they will never sell P2W.  They also will not sell you stash space as they are bought using in game currency that can not be bought for real money.

They are likely to eventually release on consoles.  But that is years away.

Their goal is to release by the end of the year, waiting until then is perfectly fine as the patch they just released is small and is supposedly the last one until launch.

Thanks. I was pretty sure it wasn't a mobile game, but I didn't feel like doing the research. Maybe Scot got it confused with another ARPG.

So, there is an in game cosmetic cash shop then. That would be new since I played last. I'm not a huge fan, but it isn't a deal breaker in itself either.

I thought about reinstalling a few months back and trying out the changes, but it seemed so close to 1.0 that I thought I'd wait.

I had the right game, but was reading the wrong comments from another game I was looking at! So what the downvoters were saying for LE was about early cash shop release and microtransactions.

A lot of people were asking them to implement the shop sooner as they wanted to keep supporting the game and had bought all of the supporter packs.  I have no issue with it and don't really care about those that do.  They are purely cosmetic and help the dev.
