They are redoing the art into a "painted style".

Ah, you beat me to it.

I get their reasons it's just so horrible. Why not make it less realistic but a different less World of Warcrafty style?

After playing so much BG3 with the amazing realistic graphics, this new pantheon art style hurts to look at. I hope I can get used to it.

If they are are overhauling their art style this late in the game to make things faster in the long term?   How long is the long term anyway?   Its already been almost a decade, how much longer can this go on geez.

If its actually worth it to change graphics to speed up delivery, then they must just be getting started.  For the last 3 years they keep saying they will be in alpha by the end of the year.  So how long is this "new art style overhaul" going to delay?

I cant tell if they are finally getting realistic about how to deliver the game, or is this just another BS thing to delay Alpha.

I don't think we can call this a late stage in the game, despite almost a decade in development. In fact I'm convinced you have to treat kickstarter MMO development like dog years. 7 kickstarter MMO dev years are like 1 normal MMO dev team years.

This isn't going to speed up anything. Well except maybe more concept art. I'd also say it's not like it's going to delay anything since there is nothing other than the glacial pace of development to delay.

I think it's a good thing that they are doing something more than a bunch of Unity store assets but it's also laughably slow to overhaul the art style 8 years into development. I wouldn't be surprised if this game is another 5 or more years out from release if it ever makes it there. So the art people have tons of time to overhaul this.

I am curious about how much AI csn do these days. Using no artist can they use a program to change the art style of everything they have so far. I keep seeing AI art in the internet and other things they can accomplish can they currently overhaul a whole game?

    ... wtf ?

    They REDO THE ARTSTYLE ?

    WTF ???

Are they now actively looking for reasons to not release ?

Not that this wouldnt be the worst time possible to release, thanks to Baldurs Gate 3.

At this point, the world looks bearable. They should probably focus more on systems and getting that into people's hands asap since many of these games tend to work on graphical updates sometime down the road (ff14 and their graphical update starting in 7.0 come to mind). Otherwise you get a New World situation where that game is beautiful as all hell but the substance of the game (as well as the engine they use) are questionable at best. There's a reason why OSRS/Albion/WoW classic still have the solid following they do and Pantheon should be focused on fitting in that bracket, not shooting to be 'the top.'

I think they really looked at their development and realized that they just couldn't create the entire world with the artists they had leaning toward a more realistic art style.

Remember, we don't know how they work. I strongly suspect that many of these people are putting in time after their regular jobs/projects.

Still, they didn't have to go with this kiddie, cutsey art style.

Just look at that video. We're supposed to find those new "monsters" threats?

Ashen is a good example of an art style that is not realistic but still captivating.

Heard mentioned at an AI call where I work that a recent court ruled AI created art cannot be copyrighted....

Thinking of the ramifications to gaming if applies there, anyone can use art assets from another game to make their own if the art was created by an AI.

MS says if you use their AI tools and someone tries to claim the art or works done with their AI, they will take up the court case for you.

AI can only make new and better graphics. Without a new engineered game engine, your AI graphics are pointless.

I think this is a good change IF the team is actually seroius about getting this game to release faster.

I cant tell if they are actually finally at a point of making some progress and are making the tough design decisions for release.

    Or

If this is just another excuse to delay the game for another 5 years.

I think the team should just shut up and put their heads down and work.
    Not release updates.
    Not talk about the project.
    Just work.
If they can find some money in the cushions of their couch or something maybe they can release it at some point.

Some crowd funded MMOs have that attitude, but its not good for keeping the revenue coming in. When it comes to these sort of releases you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Why I agree with you is I think the gaming community eventually  needs a break from never ending drip drip releases and Pantheon has reached that point for me. They can come back to us next year but for now give us a break.

I agree with Scot, if they don’t release updates the game is dead vaporware. If they do they piss off people expecting big announcements. Especially at this point.

Developers need to become more self-aware and realize “fox is completed” or “here’s some lore” or “we have new concept art “ is NOT an update.

I mean this is better than the previous art style which was instantly forgettable.

But it doesn't pop, or present anything too unique, which is a general problem for Pantheon in my opinion.

Regardless of development time (which is super long)
The game is just kind of middling, stock fantasy, improved but still generic art style, gameplay from over 15 years ago.
Everything you expect from a MMO and nothing else.

They really need to bring something big and unique to build up hype.
Being too mid and not enough significant updates does not inspire any faith.

But...they have climbing implemented... isn't that enough?

Oh yes, and a return to more group oriented game play, even for harvesting and gathering activities like mining.

    Big fun.... (Not)

This part here is what will doom the game, even if they do manage to release.

Let's be honest Pantheon was always going to be a low pop game.
But low pop with strongly encouraged (read; mandatory) group play does not mix.

They will have to scramble to make changes to leveling as the population is too small to sustain the main mode of play.
Then the changes will push away the players they do have, while failing to get any new players.

SWG all over again, but faster.

Genre with high upkeep cost + niche game mechanics + multiplayer centric gameplay that needs a high population = uh oh
