About chess, studying all openings is basically worthless.
You need to find a manageable set of openings that you know reasonably well, and focus on middle game and end game which is usually much more decisive.
I guess I'm a bit weird then, as I don't have a backlog.
If I like a game, I'm gonna play it until I complete it or get bored, then I'll move onto the next. I don't buy other games if I'm already playing something, so my backlog never has a chance to grow.
In addition, the older I get, the pickier I get. Some people might view this as being closed off to new experiences, but I like to think of it as having much greater self-awareness. I am very much open to new experiences, as long as they're genuinely new. That's very rare in gaming, so I feel comfortable bypassing games when i know they contain content that I'll dislike.

I have a save it for when I retire attitude. I have been collecting games on Steam and Xbox for many, many years. I think I have about 600+ games. Please dont tell my wife lol. I think at best I have played maybe a 1/5 of what I have purchased. I personally dont feel bad about it. I bought on Xbox "Titanfall 2: Ultimate Edition" for just $5.99. My wife spends that at Starbucks without thinking more then a few times a week.

Wish I could be more like you. When it comes to game sales I am 100% a FOMO kinda guy, LOL. I hate paying full price for a game so I just cant pass on a really good sale if its a game I will play at some time later.

In your defense (and mine) this attitude may be the more cost-efficient one. You never know if and when a game will go on sale for that price or lower again. And it's better to fill your backlog from the bargain bin now than to come up empty while you wait for more sales.

I think I'm just pretty lucky (in some respects) on the mental front. I rarely feel FOMO, and outside of MMOs I don't care about playing on launch day. I just keep my wishlist updated and watch for sales.
I do buy most of my games on sale, but I've found that nearly every game gets put on sale on a regular basis. If I want a game, maximum I have to wait is maybe 3 months before it's on sale, but usually under a month. Given how many sales there are, how many games there are, I can usually find something. Plus, a bit of delayed gratification is good for you :P

I have a few games I have on Steam that serve the single minded purpose to play with my friends, like Don't Starve Together, which is actually pretty fun with a group.
But when it comes to games I playing on my own time, I just swap between DDO and GW2
It's all I have, It's all I need
I don't have any urge to spread out, or chase any new shiny, at this point. I have always enjoyed DDO, and Anet finally fixed with their most recent expansion what I perceived as a grievous wrong to the player base, and I am content to go back and play their game again, and spend my money there
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
