God, I wish PS3 would be a thing. I have been playing Planetside since 2003, and PS2 since alpha and the experience is like non other. I will say things have been rocky as of late, but I am willing to bet if they made a PS3 closer to the original Planetside and less like Battlefield, it would be a huge success!

Ahh yes the Planetside franchise...Most of my old guild in SWG consisted of players from PS1. Wars were always a thing and we had lots of large scale pvp events on Bloodfin that broke the servers since SWG wasn't built to handle it.

I hope not. The game was dog tier. Frankly all of Daybreak games game suck the big one.

The most exciting computer game moments I have ever had was playing in one of those massive battles when Planetside 2 was at its peak. It was nuts seeing so many ground vehicles, aircraft and troops running around. I would love to see a Planetside 3 if they could give it the time and budget it deserved.

I love Planetside. The huge battles are great! I have over 1000 hours in it.

However I do have a hot take. I would rather play PS2 from 8 years ago before Wrel started. Almost everything Wrel put in was crap. Oshur was absolute unmitigated crap. Sanctuary was useless. The construction stuff was bad. Artillery, Bastions, Orbital Strikes, Unstable Warpgates, all variations of bad. Removing repair from the rumble seats sucked as an engineer main and they already had it so only one could repair and there were vehicle self repair certs. Capture the flag was stupid. Original Esamir was better. I could go on and on...

I would rather go back to 2014 when Hossin came out or Higby it and even do a server before that. Not that Hossin was that great but the game was way better back then. I would like a classic server. I don't see them doing anything but screwing up a PS3.

The only good things I can think of were the achievement system and mission system.

That's not even getting into stuff like classes and cloaking etc.

Planetside Arena was an absolute abysmal failure that got shut down. Shows you everything you need to know about them making anything new. They can't even do anything good with what they have and are bleeding players from what used to be a great game that suffers from bad updates much like what happened to Robocraft.

PS2 is the best at a genre PS near enough created itself, there are no competitors so you do have to wonder could it be done better?

    Yes.

Picture almost any IP that could fit a first person shooter and instead of Planetside it's that as a MMOFPS. Warhammer, Star Wars, Transformers, G. I. Joe, etc etc. Even just expanding on Battlefield or Call of Duty and making them huge maps and 500+ person battles. They could also make a medieval version with knights, archers, etc. A fantasy version where you ride dragons and wizards cast fireballs and lightning bolts.

The MMOFPS genre is literally untapped but for Planetside 2. It's been going for over ten years and the best thing the dimwits behind it could come up with was something nobody in the community/playerbase wanted which was a watered down mode like every other FPS in Planetside Arena that got shut down in under 3 months it was such a stupid move.

They could just convert Planetside 2 to a fantasy version and print money.

Honestly it makes no sense to do a PS3. You'll fracture your already small player base into two and neither population will be large enough to support either game and they'll both die. Best case scenario PS3 is so inarguably better than PS2 that it kills PS2 outright. More likely is you get the nostalgia/luddite crowd that simply refuses to move off PS2. Now your game is split. Your best bet is to do an engine and graphics update on the current game and listen to the community and make whatever changes necessary to improve the current game.

    Good points here.

They are better off making a completely new MMOFPS rather than PS3. Even then PS3 would have been a better idea than Planetside Arena.

I think the proof of that can only be when someone does make a better game that PS2, until then it has the crown. I accept the issues especially the ones that came in years after launch but we need to see a better game to know studios can make one.

It's PS2 and World War 2 Online. That's it for MMOFPS games. It's not much of a crown when they are the pretty much the only game in town.

I've been shot thru walls due to the hit detection in PS2 more times than I can count. It's not that some company couldn't make a better game it's that they don't want to.

The fact that it's only competition (WW2 Online is pretty bad) is regular FPS games has probably helped it out a huge amount over the years. None of them have the scale PS2 does.

I've played WW2O, it was trying for something more realistic, have you ever driven a tank in that game? Hello grass and hello to half the speed of being on a road. :)
