Over the weekend, during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in London, the MMO's director Naoki Yoshida said he'd like to make an MMO as chaotic as Ultima Online, but it would have to be outside of FFXIV.

    Exactly. In spite of the number and verbosity of the forum posts by PvP players, the fact of the matter is that community is not large enough to support the development costs of a modern AAA game to then in turn make a profit. Full loot open pvp will forever be the purview of the indy passion project.

    That kind of MMO didn't sell back then either.

    Ultima Online was doing so poorly it almost had the plug pulled until Trammel released and saved the game.

    Yeah people like to forget this. I was and still am an avid fan of Ultima Online. It wasn't the PvP that people enjoyed about UO, it was always the player agency. PvP added to that diversity of agency, but it was all about the agency. Ultima Online player numbers peaked after Age of Shadows; a heavily PvE focused expansion. Player numbers in UO shot up tremendously after Trammel as well, as you said. They even added stuff to combat the full looting too. (Item insurance)
