This is an anger-bait post. Because the sales and reviews speak for it- it raised the bar on so many levels.

But hey. Who am I to educate you on this matter.

In what way is this game even slightly overrated? Please explain.

It might not be your favorite game of all time, but it's easily the most ambitious, well-crafted, and comprehensive cRPG in terms of choice, story, and gameplay ever created, and it's not even close. If anything, it deserves more praise.

Well, I love BG3, but I dont care for archievements, even less so this one.

But if you like them, well, have at it.

If it didn't have such a vast amount of fan service explicit content and fully voiced dialogue I don't think it would be getting the critical acclaim it has right now. Granted, I do agree fully voiced/animated is an ambitious achievement, I also think it is a bit unnecessary because I'm not afraid to read in my RPGs.

I found the gameplay underwhelming, it felt too 'themepark' for my taste. Without dropping spoilers I felt the story and character writing generally mediocre. Though I shelved the game after 12 hours of personal playtime I've watched my wife play it for hundreds so I've seen quite a large array of the choices by proxy. (her goal is to see every possible dialogue option)

Without getting into my list of minor nitpicky gripes it's worth pointing out how substantially buggy the gameplay experience is. Every single play session I (or as I watched my wife) experiences various bugs. NPCs with busted pathing, dialogue skipping by itself, inability to open menus/interact with objects, etc. I get this is sort of the norm for rpgs and modern gaming in general with the expectation it will be supported with bugfixes for the foreseeable future but I absolutely can't agree that I'm having a 10/10 experience when I can't even save my progress because the game has bugged.

Of course this is all to taste, regardless of my disappointment in BG3 I'm glad its getting so much attention because now I'm sure a flurry of cRPG's I'll probably like more will follow in its wake.

    *edit*
I realize this post is probably going to get me jumped for "calling BG3 a bad game" or whatever so I feel the need to point out that my opinion is that it is overrated not 'bad.'

Err why yes a story driven game is indeed a themepark, not a sandbox.

    ... duh ???

How would that ever be a valid complaint ?

I never had the same feeling when I played other story-driven contemporary cRPGs like the Shadowrun series or the Pillars of Eternity games. I also never felt the same way about classic cRPG's like Planescape Torment or Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. What gave me that feeling in Baldurs Gate 3 was the scope and frequency of the 'theme park rides' vs the amount of nuance in atmosphere and worldbuilding. A lot of the time I felt like if I took 5 steps in any direction I'd move to another over the top set piece - which is fine if that is what you want, as I said per my taste it is 'too much.'

It's pretty clear by the box office financials that Michael Bay films are amazing and awesome action films but there is also a large contingent that believes more bigger explosions doesn't inherently make an action movie 'better,' despite the argument that "more explosions make a better action movie, duh, how is that even a valid criticism."

Come on, you can do better than that.

As for BG3 ... fair, unless it forces you to use Hard Mode as well(like it does in D:OS 2).

if they can ensure an anticheat, then this is the greatest addition to the game

Hey now, I'm proud of my latest Steam "achievements" in 7D2D which I had to seek out after reading about as they were so inane even a well seasoned player on our server never stumbled into them.

The first is one given for jumping into a lake in a frozen biome without any clothing on and "surviving" for a minute.

Who thinks to do something like this? Not me, I install insulating mods in my underwear. :)

The second is called "Dirty Larry", given for killing 44 zombies with a .44 Magnum revolver.

Props to the devs for the movie reference but I didn't discover it naturally during normal gameplay since the Magnum is probably the worst gun weapon in the game after the pipe pistol.

Good stopping power sure, but is one of the loudest guns in the game, with limited capacity (6 rounds) and stupidly long reload times no one bothers to use it.

One of those occasions where attempting to portray a gun realistically falls on its face, especially if other weapons are not rendered in the same fashion.
