    Well, let's look at the PC MMOs and see how they're doing.

    Ouch! at Guild Wars 2.

    In the quarter that an expansion was released revenue only went up by $1 million.

    That's not good.

    Yeah Guild Wars 2 is walking a very thin line for several years now. I would not be shocked if NCSOFT calls it a day in 2024 for Guild Wars 2 or just puts a skeleton crew on the game. Maybe we will get Guild Wars 3 sooner than we thought.

    I can only speak to myself because I've become less and less of a live-service gamer, but I'm guessing that the end of the dragon saga just represents a potential jumping off point for the game, and I'm personally not interested in annual mini-expansions.

    I'm not going to suddenly support an expansion model that I hated in ESO and Destiny just because it's applying to a game I actually play. I'd like to think I'm more honest than that.

    Are gamers finally waking up to the live service model and how mobile games are more of a milking exercise than any other platform? But there's too much wishful thinking going on here, so take a big pinch of salt with this one.

    I think its more of people are just going fucking broke in this shit show of an economy right now and have far less disposable income than they had last year.

    Consumers were bound to learn eventually that there's no such thing as a free lunch. The next scene in this melodrama is going to be weird, as the MBA crowd still has no idea what gives a game staying power.

    I think more than anything it shows how incompetent NCSoft is as any decent developer has to go out of their way to lose money on mobile. And it certainly isn't because gamers are getting smarter.

    I think this is a big part of it. As a former GW2 player I can't help but get the feeling that 'mini-expansions' is a rebranding of the 'Living World' except now there is an entry fee.

    Most dynamic events are soloable, especially in the core game. Hearts are ALL soloable.

    It feels like the majority of mmo players kinda flocked back to Final Fantasy XIV and WoW; like... there is something that can really be said about Free Trials; and that they work- REALLY well.

    FFXIV for instance just expanded it's free trial to Stormblood, so that's 2 whole expansions now ffxiv players get to play for free with no time limit or restrictions.

    Also have you heard it's critically acclaimed? (sorry, haha)

    I'm not sure what WoW is doing these days, but i know lots of people have gone back to Warcraft for the upcoming Cata classic server and the hardcore servers.

    But i can only speak for FFXIV, as i'm seeing more and more new players(sprouts) pop up every day on my server. (Gilgamesh)

    I think this is it. I think it to do with a lot of issues but you nailed the most basic reason in my opinion. Part of that too is competition. There are so many games and apps and everything now and people only have so much attention. My son jumps from app to app and game to game faster than I can keep track of. I also think we have had such a couple years of live service, seasonal model, battlepasses, etc... that people are getting sick of it. I can only do so many games with that model and its actually frustrating to keep track of.

    Example - Overwatch 2. I installed it this weekend to check it out again (first time since launch). I was completely at a loss for words. There is like 4 currencies and some things can be bought with one and other things the other. I immediately uninstalled because I am TOO DAMN busy to sit there and figure out some game's payment and currency model.

    The old military principle of "Keep it simple, stupid" applies here. I play games to have fun and escape, not to work on a Business degree and understand the ins and outs of economic policy and finance.
    Also hopefully everyone realizes if they decide to step away from a live service model something will need to come in to replace the lost revenue. Hello NFT and Crypto as well as anything else they can muster.

    But remember guys we will be getting rid of the now "bad" live service (like it was good at any stage) and need to welcome our gaming savior, Crypto with open arms!
