imagePantheon: Rise of the Fallen Is Dropping Its 247 Extraction Mode Following Backer Pushback | MMORPG.com

After a rough few weeks, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen developer Visionary Realms has reversed course, canceling its planned 247 Extraction gameplay mode and returning to its full PvE MMORPG development. This is after fan outcry against the spin-off mode reached a fever pitch at the end of October, with this reversal coming thanks to that feedback.

What I never understood is how an extraction mode was supposed to be able to help develop a MMO. That plus it taking away from the time for MMO development to create the mode.

Good news, players are happy to wait longer if they get what they want or maybe even an approximation of what they want. But how long will they have to wait, no idea now.

I had high hopes for Pantheon when they announced it 10 years ago. Given the last decade and seeing the current state of the game I have lost that hope. I know graphics aren't the end all and be all but it took them 10 years to settle on a graphical style and current graphics after 10 years of development are worse than EQ 1 which is nearing 25 years old. What happened to all the Kickstarter money? What about the pledges they have had open for the last few years? Where's the development gone over 10 years of time and money? Most gamers I know that played since EQ days don't even have VR/Pantheon on their radar anymore and think of it as an ongoing scam.

This is the right move and the only good one for them, even if it is just damage control at this point. It was dumb of them to think the spin-off was ever going to be well received by any means.

Oh good, now the "devs" can blame dropping 247 for the failure of launching Pantheon. They went "bankrupt or something" from all the $1,000.00 beta invites and other backups, and funds, and/or donations.

Kickstarter wasn't succesful so there never was any money from that!

I think this is just another one of those kickstarts thats going to end up or already is a dumpsterfire and that will be there.

The only fun in this game will be watching the drama

Again another example of devs that were completely out of touch with thier customers.  I guess they got reaquainted in a hurry.  When everyone including the fanboys turn on you, then you know it was a bad idea.

How they thought this was a good idea in the first place is baffling.

Not surprising, considering even the most hardcore fans were pissed at VR for doing this. But again it shows that the people in charge of VR are completely incompetent.

They wasted a year on this 24/7 thing, in time and money, saying it was to help speed up testing and development.

Ouch, I am not a fan of the new animations, new spell graphics. Massive step backwards.

This is how stories on the Internet go, team takes a few months to develop something new, now it's been a year, soon it will be since Brad died.

Well maybe we will finally get that end of year Alpha access they promised.  Few years late but at least this huge fiasco delivered us Alpha AND with an NDA lift.

There are alot of Alpha testers, and not all are going to be fanbois, so there will at least be some true info going out.  I might have to log in just to see for myself.

This could rekindle the flame, or break it forever.  High risk move, interested in how it pans out.

I did ask Chris to look down the sofa and see if he had any spare change he could spare for indie MMOs. No reply so far. :)

LOL! But you can say a lot about Chris Roberts and him not being good at Economy and project lead and all, ........but at least he keeps a lot of people in employment, who actually get paid a salary.

Especially after what is currently happening all over in the industry with mass lay-offs.

I get that they wanted a new stream of income, devs can't live on hopes and dreams after all, but the decision was a little tone-deaf after what happened with chronicles of elyria and their spin-off thing no?

I agree this is a good decision, although the best decision would have been to never try this to begin with.

Are they the first ones to *reverse* their decision on a second game? I remember Camelot Unchained doubled down on the Ragnarok game.

Yes, just like mob bosses and heads of drug cartels keep a lot of people employed.

What a surprise ... indie developers fail to ask for enough money and then try something extremely shady to try to continue funding their "game" (which in reality is little more than a pile of overly optimistic dev blogs.)
